but they've been recommended to me (by a trustworthy party). If I'm gonna buy one record, what should I shoot for? (I don't have downloading capabilities, so I'll be actually spending money...)

'empty bell ringing in the sky'

Yes indeed -- not least because I'm on that record (you can hear me, DB, El Diablo and others all clapping at the end of the Terrastock 2 track...so okay, we're all drowned out by everyone else's applause but anyway).

But yes, that's a grand place to start, a collection of live recordings that are simply fascinating. The T2 track is the longest on there and is just marvellous -- drones, wordless calls, some kinda strange mix between the Appalachians and the Himalayas if you like.

I was a little turned off by the description of that record as being focused on "tibetan bowl" playing -- am I being unfair, or does this teeter into New Age/Windham Hill stuff? I'm hoping for a record that bludgeons me, at least a little.

It ain't pretty per se. There's a roughness to their sound that isn't bludgeoning...

'empty bell ringing in the sky' seconded!

three months pass...
Max Meadows is more bludgeoning and guitarnoise oriented, if that's your thang! (But you probably already bought whichever one you were going to buy, like, four months ago...) I'm just listening to the first record now, Brown Cycolpaedia, which is much more song-oriented but nonetheless awesome. Great group.

I did, in fact, get hold of Empty Bell Ringing in the Sky -- which I like fine, but only when it's up really really loud, so maybe Max Meadows is, in fact, more my thang.

I saw Pelt in March, and they were cool, but same thing -- I wish they'd been much louder. At this show, they followed Wolf Eyes (among others) who were loud as hell, so it must have been subdued by choice, but I could just sense that it would have been more powerful (for me, at least), if it had been insanely loud. Ah well. It was pretty cool anyway.

I heard the 'Two Originals' CD by Jack Rose the other day, and wasn't so impressed - refried Faheyisms crossed w/ a bit of Mazzacane, and a rather too predictable cover of 'Dark Was The Night' (choose other acoustic blues songs please!).

I winced a bit when I saw the sleeve notes to it, almost exactly in the style of 60s Fahey. Jack's obviously a terrific guitar player though, he just needs to find more of a voice of his own.

Yes! a couple of times. The drone is the focus, but they usually have a pretty big group (last time I saw them was 8 or more, I think, but it was like a family thing, not sure if every outing would get the same treatment).
Super nice folks, too.

two years pass...

New record Effigy is really good distillation of all that is Pelt (ambient soundscapes, haunting atmosphere, avant-Americana) : http://mie.limitedrun.com/products/504355-pelt-effigy

Making some year-end lists and seeing a bit of press, too. Vinyl sounds great.
