I say Pisces Iscariot by a mile. Trippy.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Saturday, 24 January 2004 18:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Oof. Well, Mellon Collie still for me, though really it's a matter of grade instead of clear dominance. It's two hours' worth of getting lost in all kinds of noises.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 January 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Another vote for MCIS here. My soundtrack for the 90's.

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Saturday, 24 January 2004 18:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Just to be a little different I pick: Adore

A Nairn (moretap), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i nominate Siamese Dream.
if there must be one, then that IS the one.

it's all over, almost more so than MCIS. but, with a brevity.
not to mention the 36 layers of guitar on some of the tracks.
that album is a Mack truck of RAWK POWER!

runner up- Pisces- if for Starla alone...or Frail+Bedazzeled

eedd, Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I like adore.
and am i the only person who thought zwan sucked?

Dude (The Yellow Dart), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Siamese Dream is what I imagine kids from Long Island listening to when they get stoned in parking lots.

ModJ (ModJ), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

MCatIS is so far beyond anything else they've ever done.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, Rotten Apples: the greatest hits! All the best bits without the filler, they had a fair amount of filler.

jel -- (jel), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Siamese Dream, no contest.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

and am i the only person who thought zwan sucked?

Seeing that more people hate Corgan than love him, and it was a commercial flop, no. You're not alone.

I liked it. They did a great show when I saw them last year, too.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

The only time I caught them was late in 2001 when they played their first shows ever out in this neck of the woods for some reason. Really great and lively.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 24 January 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd keep Gish and use the rest as coasters (sorry, Ned).

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:09 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll go with Pisces Iscariot too.

Al (sitcom), Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Mellon Collie please.

Chris Jones (Crackity Jones), Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Siamese Dream.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Adore. Though really only the first 2/3s of it.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

"Siamese Dream is what I imagine kids from Long Island listening to when they get stoned in parking lots."

HAHAAAAHHAAA!!!!
oh, me, oh, my.
how about Chambersburg, PA. in the mountains. parking lots were always full...
heheheeee!

btw-LOTS of people cried foul on zwan. for what reason other than billy corgan, i don't know. too upbeat?
i will say this, i just got a copy of the BBC sessions zwan did and holy mother of gawd! the version of '18' they do coupled with Spilled Milk and Riverview are pretty awe inspiring...

eedd, Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

_ADORE_

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 24 January 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

if only the best of 'mellon collie' was on one disc but he had to try and re-make 'the white album' (two discs, with quite a bit of filler, then the last 'goodbye' type track sigh).
like 'siamese' despite 'silverfuck'.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 24 January 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Tough call, but it'll have to be Siamese Dream.

And for the record I think Zwan are dreadful.

Carrie Turner (cjt), Sunday, 25 January 2004 00:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Gish cause it seems to let loose a little more than Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie is too up and down. I really only love Rhinoceros and Bury Me though. And it was not until not until the Tricky tune did I realize how cool "Suffer" was. I haven't heard this album in like 5 or 6 years though.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Sunday, 25 January 2004 00:27 (twenty-two years ago)

yea! PI!!

justin (Justin M), Sunday, 25 January 2004 00:43 (twenty-two years ago)

gish, although I must admit I never listened to the Smashing Pumpkins again after they released Siamese Dream.

Vic Funk, Sunday, 25 January 2004 00:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Zwan was great, especially the hilarious DVD.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 25 January 2004 10:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't actually have Gish or PI, I've heard them though. I kinda like the live in Chicago bootleg "3 Feet High" Italian CD I have.

jel -- (jel), Sunday, 25 January 2004 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

as a loyal Pumpkins fanatic, i'd have a hard time choosing only one - but i think if forced to choose, i'd go with Siamese Dream. still hits me every time.

as far as Zwan goes... the studio album sucked major ass, but they were a tremendous live presence.

jonviachicago, Sunday, 25 January 2004 17:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Pisces Iscariot for my money.

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Holy shit, I was expecting to be the only Pisces Iscarioter up in here. "Starla" is probably my favorite moment of this band's entire career. I'd say Gish but it hasn't been quite the same to me since I quit tripping LSD ha ha.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a big fan of whir, it's the clincher on pisces for me

ipsofacto (ipsofacto), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Starla IS one the greatest songs i've ever heard.
it's got it all, the quiet tinkles, the huge wall of rawk falling on top of you, the 'can this get any better' feeling...AND THEN IT DOES!

i can just imagine the blood on billy's hands after doing that solo, fingers shredded. jimmy falls off his stool. band collapses as a whole. which you can almost hear, the last 10-15 seconds.
gawd that song is epic...

eedd, Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:24 (twenty-two years ago)

"Starla" and "Whir" are probably my two favorite tracks!! The whole album is solid though. Every note, every breath, every little cool swirly phaser effect is perfect.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

The BEST thing about "Starla" is how anticlimactic the first wave of distortion is... then the second one is like HOLY SHIT

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

This is where I say I consider myself to be a lucky duck to have seen them do "Starla" live -- not that they didn't play it only once or twice, but still. :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

five years pass...

Gish.

It is the only Smashing Pumpkins record where Billy Corgan's ego is kept at margin, allowing the rest of the band to shine. The overall sound is derivative, sure, and there's also traces of the teenage angst and fay ghotic imagery that would eventually consume it all, but the whole record is delivered with such a naive, pubescent charm that I really don't care. It still remains one of my favorite albums to play on summertime.

Moka, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 06:49 (sixteen years ago)

Siamese Dream is the only one I've ever owned or listened to in its entirety. It still holds up and is a sentimental favorite.

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 11 November 2009 07:15 (sixteen years ago)

another vote for gish. as so often in rock music the first album of a band was their best. i love to listen to it at night on headphones.

alex in mainhattan, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 14:07 (sixteen years ago)

Mellon Collie, despite (and because) of all its homgaes, rip-offs, dead ends, ups and downs and inconsistencies. A good testimony of Corgan's brilliance, fanatic work ethic and devouring ego mania.

Marco Damiani, Wednesday, 11 November 2009 14:41 (sixteen years ago)

Gish, but I stopped following them after Mellon Collie. Heard Zeitgeist a couple of times and don't remember a thing about it.

Billy and Kim Fowley.

Gish & Siamese Dream are such lovely records.
