A faux genre propped up by journalists looking for anything to cover.

Xii (Xii), Monday, 26 January 2004 21:06 (twenty-two years ago)

jackie o motherfucker
sunburned hand of the man

tangentially: scorces/charalambrides, double leopards, six organs of admittance..

I had this whole thing explained to me at length by the head of a distribution company. The fallout of the big story was what cracked me up the most - all these people who moved to the boondocks of Vermont to be a part of a non-existant scene there. Most of them immediately left upon realizing this.

Xii (Xii), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 01:47 (twenty-two years ago)

HA! Oh that's beautiful.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Surefire?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

(Hey Tim did Thomas Tallis ever turn out to be That Thomas Tallis?)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

(With apologies to Dan Perry.)

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Surefire?

Haha, someone else has obviously heard the story from the horse's mouth.

Xii (Xii), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Japanese Karaoke Afterlife Experiment

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, Surefire's in VT now, and they have associations with some of those bands, so it was an educated guess.

Ned, I think that post to T. Tallis was in the deleted mingers thread, so I dunno if he responded or not. I'll have to find him elsewhere in ILXville.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:57 (twenty-two years ago)

weird americana = "im too stoned and lazy to choose what i release so i will release everything i have ever recorded on cd-r no matter how crappy it is -- pass the joint, dood -- that last jam was killer."

jack cole (jackcole), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

the key to this whole scene is NOT TO BUY BEFORE YOU LISTEN, AND ONLY BUY THE GOOD STUFF.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 18:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the key to this whole scene is to catch these guys at festivals where bands you already know you like are playing.

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Aleksandr...that name...that name...Into the Wild? Or am I mis-remembering the allusion?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

The new Portals of San Jacinto record is unbelievable. Probably the best of this bunch..

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Broheems, is that the edition of 35 3x8" lathe-cut one or the edition of 7 CD-R?

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Aleksandr...that name...that name...Into the Wild?

yep, but the spelling is a sex and the city ref (aka "the russian," aleksandr petrovsky).

aleksandr supertramp (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Ian OTM. I made the mistake of downloading too many SHOTM albums in one weekend and listening to them over and over and finding one or two that were cool, but just getting burnt on the whole chore. Haven't listened to anything New, Weird, or American since.

scott m (mcd), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I just listened to the ATP reish of 'Wow!' by Jackie O Motherfucker and I don't care abt 'scenes' or whatnot, it was just real gd heavy psych freakout stuff w/ free jazzesque sax and sonic youthy gtrs - if that's the kind of thing you like, you'll like this one a lot

Andrew L (Andrew L), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

LISTEN TO V MAJESTIC

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:41 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, yeah: listen to v majestic. not as free, though? at least what i've heard. also: the eyesores are great psych/folk, but not very jammy. heavy with accordion.

Ian Johnson (orion), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I kinda wish I went to that accordian rock summit.

Also, the new Barnacled 7" is KILLA. We dropped two tabs of acid each and that record was fucking perfect.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

yep, but the spelling is a sex and the city ref (aka "the russian," aleksandr petrovsky).

Incidentally, Jody's been ON FIRE with the great names lately.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 1 February 2004 14:29 (twenty-two years ago)

''A faux genre propped up by journalists looking for anything to cover.''

How is this different from any genre?

I love most No neck stuff, didn't enjoy the bits of jackie O motherfucker i've heard and I think that the A-band LP on the QBICO label could probably fall under this even though all the people on it are English and this stuff was recorded in Nottingham in '91.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 1 February 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Are Califone considered NWA at all?

Nick Mirov (nick), Sunday, 1 February 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Straight Outta Chicago

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 1 February 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

is this shortly to become the New Hippy Shit?

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Sunday, 1 February 2004 17:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Caroliner to thread.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Sunday, 1 February 2004 19:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I recently got a Sunburned Hand of the Man album that I like called Soft. Very motorik/krautrocky in places cool stuff I think I like the no neck aesthethic better though. A little more mystic and the Jewelled antler collective too.

hector (hector), Sunday, 1 February 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I just read a review of the new califone alb and actually I have vague recollections of hearing them on the radio a few years back. They are on the thrill jockey label so I'm gonna guess that it isn't quite that, more post-rock-ish side of things.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 1 February 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I know it doesn't really matter at all, but New Weird America is about the most ridiculous name for a genre ever. With that out of the way, I'm a big fan of just about everything Jewelled Antler related. I don't think of Califone as part of the NWA.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 14 March 2004 20:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Sunday, 14 March 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

New Decent Americans is more like it.

Rockist Scientist (rockistscientist), Sunday, 14 March 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

HEY WHO WANTS TO BUY A CDR?

LITTLE LAMB [Jon Williams] (ex machina), Sunday, 14 March 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it weird? Or new? Or American?

christhamrin (christhamrin), Monday, 15 March 2004 09:16 (twenty-two years ago)

HEY WHO WANTS TO BUY A CDR?

only if there are less than 20 copies, it comes with a poorly-xeroxed cover and it costs more than $12!!!
