and the relationships to OLNEYVILLE SOUND SYSTEM, BLACK DICE, LANDED, SIX FINGER SATELLITE, ETC.

i'm making a chart using different-colored gel pens and will report back later. seriously.

(p.s.- plate tectonics = plate SUCKtonics)

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 26 January 2004 16:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Ok, I haven't heard them yet.

Perhaps a Venn Diagram?

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 26 January 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

take a couple of brats, move them from rhode island to brooklyn. give them instruments but don't teach them how to play. mix and match as your please.

mc (mcutt), Monday, 26 January 2004 16:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno - I really liked Pixeltan's EP on Troubleman. I've been unable to find out if they've had anything out prior or since then - but I did read there's members in Plate Tectonics, of whom I have no idea what they sound like. I think I might have read that Pixeltan had / were going to record with the DFA, but like everything else connected to that scene, I'd take it with a pinch of salt.

On a somewhat related, The world needs more bands with J. Ryan and Dan St. Jacques.

Oh, LANDED played a reunion show this summer!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 26 January 2004 16:27 (twenty-two years ago)

PIXELTAN had the drummer (Hisham) from BLACK DICE when I saw them play with LIGHTNING BOLT in an apartment in Brooklyn. They were a three piece at the time with Devin (who did the killer animations in the LBOLT DVD) playing keys and guitar, and his girlfriend playing something else... I can't remember. Then Adam, drummer from Olneyville SS joined in on drums and Adam's wife, Hitomi on keys. Last time I saw them it was Adam on drums, Devin on bass, Hitomi on keys and Devin's girl (I can't remember her name because I am a clod!) singing. That makes PT kinda LA>TEXAS>JERSEY>TOKYO>RI>NYC, but really only NYC.

The have a live record with Sensational rapping on it.

Dan (St. Jacques?), of LANDED, has a big beard and was the bass player in OSS. Only time I saw OSS they were a 2 piece, but they used to have lotsa singers. Adam from OSS also used to play in LANDED at the beginning. I think there's two dudes (drums for sure. guitar maybe) from SIX FINGER SATELLITE in LANDED. Dan's in a new band called VINCEBUS ERUPTUM playing bass.

Anyone wanna sell me their SFS "Machine Cuisine" EP, eh?

Patrick Delaney (TeethofSkull), Monday, 26 January 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

there
tweet tweet. a little bird just told me:

- there are dfa-produced pixeltan tracks that are going to be seeing the light of day very soon, with hisham drumming ("full on dance floor friendly and very loud")

- an sfs reissue series thru subpop is slowly gathering steam

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:06 (twenty-two years ago)

yaaaaaaaaaaay!

PS - The new Vincebus album is pretty awesome. I haven't heart the s/t CDR yet though even though I've had it for weeks.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 26 January 2004 20:10 (twenty-two years ago)

adam from OSS is in Plate Tectonics and used to be in Pixeltan. dan from OSS was in landed and is now in vindecebus eruptum. j. ryan & rick pelletier from 6FS used to play in landed, and rick now plays with the arab on radar dudes in the chinese stars. rick also plays in lamachine, though they're on hiatus.

landed are one of the best prov. bands EVAH. the dan st. jacques collection is consistently amazing. that thee hydrogen terrors LP i got over winter break is good, jon; erotic adventures of... sick fuzzy bass like we've come to expect.

raghu played sax & 'lectronics in OSS on the most recent album, and I helped him teach algebra to stoners & goth girls.

the singer on the first 3 OSS album, Jon Von Ryan, was also (surprise) in Von Ryan's Express (who you like, right?) and he has a solo album that i haven't heard. but it's always at ARMAGEDDON.

Does anyone else get the impression that there are no roads leading out of Providence?

dean! (deangulberry), Monday, 26 January 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

ALL LOADS LEAD TO ROME and let's not even talk about harsh analog noise incestuality.

ianaaaa, Monday, 26 January 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not so into them live, haven't heard their records. And dammit, why can't I find my copy of Machine Cuisine?

hstencil, Monday, 26 January 2004 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

also kyack/pelletier/j. ryan played with MEN'S RECOVERY PROJECT. so extend to born against/emo/rah brahs/weirdness.

iaan johnston, Monday, 26 January 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

my copy of machine cuisine can be had for a reasonable price.

lauren (laurenp), Monday, 26 January 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Let's build an undirected graph of Providence band incest!

Jon Williams (ex machina), Monday, 26 January 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

hurble gurble. and dwyer from pink&brown and coachwhips was in landed, too.

okay so my humble opinion upon hearing the pixeltan dfa 12" is that it might be dfa's best 12" ever. it's fucking fantastic.

Poundstretcher (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 04:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Pixeltan Get Up Say What 12" on DFA is absolutely amazing, yes it is. J.O.Y.'s Sunplus 12" might be just a tad better but not much. If DFA could put out more records like these...

Bimble... (Bimble...), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 04:46 (twenty-one years ago)

DFA remix of Black Dice sucks just as much as Black Dice without DFA!

ergo conclude that the good bits of the pixeltan record are all DFA!

Hi Rhode Islanders! Welcome to the shiny wonderful world of hipsterdom! Where women are more than a theoretical construct!

Jacob (Jacob), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 06:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Have you heard Beaches and Canyons?

BOATPEOPLEHATEFUCK (ex machina), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 18:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I have, It's great.

Poundstretcher (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Pixeltan doesn't even like that single, right?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Pixeltan is great.

But you guys should be talking about THE SOFT CIRCLE though.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 30 March 2005 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I googled them after you mentioned them.

Also I listened to thingy Rabbit Cycle and Pink and Brown on your recommendation.
