And are they as potentially good as this interview with the lead dude suggests? (7, 8, 11 and 16 are my favorite answers.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

arent they the former sunny day real estaters?

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

i thought that was the fire theft

the surface noise (electricsound), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

well seeing as they are on Nuclear Threat I definitely think that rules out Sunny Day Real Estate (plus, surface is right, jogging the memory cell wasted on that). ahhh! i think they are ex Fu Manchu.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

they are okay.they do the boogiemetalretro thing a la all those other bands like nebula, atomic bitchwax. i have their fmep record they did where they cover misfits/blue cheer/judas priest/alice cooper. i never listen to it though. which must say something. to someone. they were on Small Stone Records along with household names like Halfway To Gone & Five Horse Johnson.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

how can someone trust a band that has a gear list on their website? *shivers*

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:32 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm afeared that they are one of the many many bands who would like to be viewed as mythical rock godz who take no prisoners. which is fine. and who knows, maybe their new stuff is stellar.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Sez some single of theirs is getting airplay in that interview, so maybe we'll all find out soon enough.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

their biggest claim to fame was that the fat guy on mtv (ian) regularly mentioned 'how awesome they are!'...

he was fired soon thereafter.

I had their album (I might still have it). I never made it through a whole song without hitting "skip." I do like the singer's take on Tenacious D, though—"Heavy metal is fun, not funny. Death to irony!" Total 1000% agreement, obviously.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I have not heard Fireball Ministry, but this is a man of intelligence and taste, clearly.

Great 20 Questions!

Subquestion: Is there a more consistantly ENTERTAINING music website than Metal Sludge? I think not.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 16:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I dig their new album The Second Great Awakening. Search: "Master of None," "King." The fact that they proclaim themselves as "the first church of rock n roll" makes them cool. Period.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

If Jeanne likes this album, I'm sold.

Is there a more consistantly ENTERTAINING music website than Metal Sludge?

No, no there isn't.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 16:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I often like Infernal Combustion better, but Metal Sludge is pretty great.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Fireball Ministry have been knocking around LA for years. Onstage, they're pretty effective, mostly because they actually have a very good singer who can also write. The new record presents most of what they've been doing in clubs in Hollywood for the last four years. If you missed the previous CDs -- which were short -- most of it is recapitulated in one way or another on "Second Awakening."

"King" is their best song by far; I'm skeptical it's getting much play anywhere. These things just don't happen that way.

They're buddies with Puny Human and one of the members of that band worked for MTV. He gave them a blurb, which hasn't worked much, either, although it looks nice on the cover. On balance, it's good for swaying nincompoops which is always useful, even good.

Here's the Voice review:

Church of Swinging Meat.

Puny Human weren't bad. They had a sense of humor on their first CD. Wonder where it went?

George Smith, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

...ex Fu Manchu.

Try Volume, if they're still around. Christ, another CD you just can't pawn anywhere.

George Smith, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

>Wonder where it went?

It's still there in the live shows. I really think they should capitalize more on their visual gimmick—twins as guitarist and bassist. I mean, shit, it worked for Nelson...

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"...twins as guitarist and bassist..."

Yeah, I thought that neat, too. When I first saw a pic of Puny Human I thought it was the Good Rats.
