Holy smoke do they both suck. But, I'd give the nod to Republica because if I remember correctly Saffron had a nice rack on her and fit legs.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Who the hell are Republica?

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:18 (twenty-two years ago)

You couldn't be more wrong about Republica.

"Ready to Go" and "Drop Dead Gorgeous" are amazing trax.

Baked Bean Teeth (Baked Bean Teeth), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:24 (twenty-two years ago)

C-Man, could you please stop posting threads about Britpop? This board is called I Love Music, and Britpop isn't actually music. Music has rhythm and is made by African-Americans. Thanks.

sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

The second Republica album is actually pretty decent as well, although the first one is shinier. It's all about "Bitch" though.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 04:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate "Ready to Go" more than all the bad Chilis tracks combined.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 04:57 (twenty-two years ago)

'wrapp' is the only Republica track I like - unfortunately this means I prefer RHCP

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 11:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Music has rhythm and is made by African-Americans

Whaaaa? And that's it?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Anyhow, Rep were Rub.

Saff was better with N-Joi, "Anthem" anyway.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 11:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Samantha Sprackling

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 11:45 (twenty-two years ago)

did Saffron actually sing herself on 'Anthem'?

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 11:54 (twenty-two years ago)

There was some 'house nightclub w/expensive film effect' TV prog, about two years before the hit, where she came out and said "Hello, I'm saffron, I'm the singer with N-Joi...... "I'm in love with youuuuuuuu.. Wont you love me tooooooo"

So, yes.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 12:34 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds bugger all like her.

Pop quiz: which rave-house anthem did dummer from Placebo, erm, drum on?

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

That's what I thought when Republica came out, funnily enough...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Saffron doesn't sing on the actual record as far as i can tell - certainly not the 'true love can be hard to find' bit - she was more just eye-candy then, like the girl who would mime JX's 'Son Of A Gun'

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Enrique - no idea! do tell

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

No, I'm usually a good judge of miming, and she did seem to be singing it...

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 12:57 (twenty-two years ago)

'Rhythm is a Mystery' -- K-Klass

Enrique (Enrique), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I've always thought RHCP were rubbish (and every argument to the contrary has failed to convince me otherwise). Same shit repeated over far too many albums. Yawn. Republica I have almost no opinion of, other than Saffron being foxy. So Republica then.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 14:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Who has bigger breasts - the Anthony from RHCP or Saffron?

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Republica in a landslide! RHCP are horrible, awful crap.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

WTF. Red Hot Chili Peppers at least have memorable songs, even if you don't like 'em. All I can remember about Republica is that the singing girl had dyed red hair.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:54 (twenty-two years ago)

the key is that I have bad RHCP memories, which is worse than little memory at all (the little memory I do have is Drop Dead Gorgeous, which is a pretty good memory)

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 18:59 (twenty-two years ago)

from Saffrons message to her fans on new website
http://www.swarmswarm.com/

"would someone please tell the french cowards on the message board to get of their Fucking cross as someone else needs the wood.x"

zappi (joni), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Republica's only hit sounded like a beer commercial, something about "get ready to go".

Flea has more soul in his pants made out of stuffed animals than that kind of crap.

earlnash, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't understand Flea-haters. How can anyone hate such a wonderful little man?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

He's a nihilist.

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

ja! he belieeeeves zin nuuuthing!

hstencil, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Republica are the prototype of the "one hit wonder", whereas the Red Hot Chili Peppers -- despite their numerous annoying qualities -- have been around and making music for about two decades. Thus, it's not really a fair comparison, is it.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex have you been at the cheese again? a; Republica had two hits (that were exactly the same, granted) and b; they were in the mid 90s, long after the one-hit-wonder phenomena first raised it's head?

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

This board is called I Love Music, and Britpop isn't actually music. Music has rhythm and is made by African-Americans. Thanks.
Most blatant Gier-bait for 2004?

I don't understand Flea-haters. How can anyone hate such a wonderful little man?
I love his bass-playing and his "Flava to Keidis's Chuck D" antics, but daaaaamn....Flea Balzary looks like a cross between a cherub, Charles Manson and the crazy Zodiac killer from "Dirty Harry"

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:16 (twenty-two years ago)

One-hit-wonderom knows no single decade. It's a virtually timeless syndrome, Southall.

You're right about Republica having two hits, but really......it wasn't all that different.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but how can they be the prototype?

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

ah, it's a figure of speech.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

...you inverted pedant!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Flea in 25 years?

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Gran!

Llahtuos Kcin (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Shit, he looks like that NOW, except scarier.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

He's got beady little taxidermist eyes.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

That looks like Dr.Demento without the hat.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

FWIW, I saw Republica in concert and they were actually k-not bad. Definitely beer-commercial soundin', but they put on a decent show.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Wasn't the drummer from Bow Wow Wow involved?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll second Nickalicious' claim to Republica not being bad live. in fact, they were tons of fun. i particularly liked how some dude was whipping beer at the stage while they were on when i saw them, and Saffron didn't even miss a beat in bouncing around and singing when she plucked yew at the dude. :) they were quite fun to see live, actually. met them afterward and they were v. nice.

far better live than on record, and pity about how utterly horrid the second album was. the first was by no means great, but the second made the first look like a masterwork by comparison. :P

janni (janni), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Republica Vs. Whale

There is your battle.

earlnash, Wednesday, 28 January 2004 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

flea: Did you hear his trumpet solo on "Smells like team spirit"?

I mean, can he actually play that instrument?
