this is one of those albums that's weirdly constantly cropping up on amg on the 'similar/related' tip.... i mean sure it's a relatively varied collection of songs but it can't be similar to THAT many things, i must have seen dancin danny d grinning at me from an amg page 50 times! that said, it's cool that amg wants you to know about it (it gets 4.5 stars!!) because it's a really nice good natured slightly goofy (sometimes a bit amateurish) set of tracks with tuff beats and - crucially - basslines... it's exactly the kind of vibe basement jaxx aim for (and dare i say miss most of the time on kish kash but whatever, they nailed it perfectly on remedy and made it way sexier). listen to 'a rhythm within', i wd love to hear that dropped in a house mix today... it would sound so awkward amid all the shiny pink titanium alan braxe type stuff. if felix da housecat had put it in his set the other night i would have forgiven him completely for all the other staleness.
the #1 reason i got this album ws because of 'c'mon and get my love' featuring cathy dennis who at that stage ws the coolest girl around in her red bob and green turtlenecks. kylie openly admits she ripped this song off for 'better the devil you know' and i still can't decide which one i like more... they both have immense charm and just the right amount of tension to make them impossible to play out... actually 'c'mon' might win just for its tokenistic hip house aspect which leads me to probably the main reason i am writing about this album: it has 2 great hip house songs on it in 'trance dance' and 'put your hands together'. both have this fake spooky haunted house of funk thing happening coupled with casper friendly ghost mcs, it's a party formula that can't fail (see also: thriller, the video of 'backstreet's back')
the rest includes 'we call it acieed' ("acid. the musical phenomenon. only for the headstrong"), a second more laid back but still likeable cathy dennis tune, 2 different mixes of a 3rd hip house track, 'it is time to get funky' which has some good textures, 'it really doesnt matter's choice orchestral hits.... ah look i'm not going to list everything! it's good, it's thrown together a bit awkwardly but it means well and i cant help but like it.

Some friends of mine featured in the video for same...

They were all quite excited about appearing in silhouette and 'moving' around a globe with a light in, that if you touched, it knocked the bulb out and they'd have to retake the shoot. "You can tell its you by the shadow" and other such. Its around this time I was thinking to myself "There has to be a better way to make a living..."

At the risk of cliche,

I have nothing to say (because I haven't heard this album) other than the obvious (CATHY DENIS WHEREVER YOU ARE EMAIL ME AND I WILL HAVE MY WIFE FILM US MAKING MAD HIP-HOUSE LOVE).

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 16:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Has your wife been informed about this?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember when Ecco the Dolphin came out on the Megadrive and Cathy swam round with a bunch of dolphins for promotional purposes (there is almost a shit pun to be made there). Great times.

Has your wife been informed about this?

No. I'm sure I'll have to cough up Taye Diggs or Denzel Washington in order to convince her it's a good idea.

> 'we call it acieed'

if i remember correctly (and i'll be aiding my memory by listening to the track in a sec),this tune didn't actually have any real acid in it!

heywood jablomi (heywood), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

promotional porpoises.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember Danny D was interviewed on the telly the time of the Sun's carry on about mad acid house parties and so on. All I remember is him denying the acid connection - saying he didn't even smoke.

I do think it's a great tune "We call it acieed". That and the Jolly Roger one that was a big hit at the same time.

Keith Watson (kmw), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

haha heywood you are absolutely right, it's fake acid!

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Thursday, 29 January 2004 03:20 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
This album is dope. It featured so many hit singles, it was later repackaged as "D-MOB's greatest hits"!!
We Call it Acied is now a legendary anthem. It might not have had the 303 squelches that acid house at the time had, but its chant of "aciiieeed" capsulated what was going on at the time, during the UKs Summer of Love.
Dope album - cop it now.
