JO'R once appeared on the front cover of The Wire in an animal suit. Quiz - Which animal?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know but now i am convinced that the flaming lips ripped him off yet again.

JIM O'ROURKE IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FLAMING LIPS!

I AM AN INDIE-FAN AND I DON'T GIVE A FUCK. HOORAY! *sounds of distant clapping* "Yeah Doomie.."

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Wednesday, 7 April 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Did he ever write another song like "Halfway To A Threeway?"
I didn't like anything else on that EP, but the title song
was so great. I especially loved the sudden overdubbed backing
chorus that appears midway - nicely shocking in a quiet
acoustic ballad.

I'd never play the song where anyone else could hear it though -
the lyrics are just too sick and strange.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 8 April 2004 02:39 (twenty-two years ago)

people don't really listen to lyrics. I used to play "Either/Or" at my last job and yuppie types would unfailingly show up during one of the sweary lines and go "this is nice mellow music, aaaaahh"

Donna Brown (Donna Brown), Thursday, 8 April 2004 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Halfway... and I'm Happy... and what I've heard from that last rock album he did, but I haven't heard much else.

Sonny A. (Keiko), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Bad Timing is one of the prettiest records I know. But I prefer the Fahey-worshipping O'Rourke to the many other O'Rourkes currently floating around. (Particularly the O'Rourke that did the music consulting on School of Rock

m.e.a. (m.e.a.), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

he really looks different these days...when i saw him a few weeks ago he was almost rail-thin, and a bit starved looking

yeah people always tell me how sweet they think halfway to a threeway is. if they listened to the lyrics i don;t think they would say that (although this makes the song even greater imo).

i used to have none
now with you i've got one
if i could add just one more
then you'd know what you're in for
you ain't getting any sleep tonight
i hope that you girls don't fight
and i hope that you don't run away
cause i'm halfway to a threeway

i've tried again and again
to indulge in just one sin
all you have to do is lie there
while i push aside your wheelchair
and i'd do anything it takes
to change your mind and apply your breaks
so i know that you won't roll away
cause i'm halfway to a threeway

can't whipe this smile on my face
when you walk by in your leg brace
you just can't climb the stairs
and you ain't got any hair
i just can't you to sit
you and your stupid epileptic fits
and i know that you can't run away
because i'm halfway to a threeway

as i lay you down on my bed
it don't matter that you're braindead
i can get so close to ya'
now that you're in a coma
i'll make it sweet but short
when i pull out your life support
and i know that you'll just fade away
because i'm halfway to a threeway
and i know that you'll just fade away
now i'm halfway to a threeway

jed (jed_e_3), Thursday, 5 August 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

truly, that song is this generation's "the juice is loose."

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 5 August 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I really don't listen to lyrics.

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 5 August 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

all his lyrics are fucked up and twisted on those three records. he delivers them so nicely though.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 5 August 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

why might he leave sonic youth?

peek freen, Thursday, 5 August 2004 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I STILL LOVE JIM O'ROURKE. I FOUND MY COPY OF ONE OF HIS ALBUMS IN MY CAN FUTURE DAYS CD TODAY. I WAS PISSED BECAUSE I HAD TO REBUY THE 'MISSING' ALBUM. BUT THEN I THOUGHT I COULD GIVE THE EXTRA COPY AWAY AND SPREAD JIM'S GENIUS. I AM A CRAZED SUPER FAN.

DOOOMIE X, Thursday, 5 August 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

SOME DAYS I CAN'T DECIDE BETWEEN ELLIOTT SMITH AND JIM O'ROURKE. I AM IN TOUCH WITH MY SENSITIVE INDIE SIDE.

DOOMIE X, Thursday, 5 August 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

TOADLY SEXY HUSKY CRUSH!

he better stay overweight and he better play with sonic youth. he did both times i saw him last summer. he was wearing a cartigan and it was 100 degrees outside. prude warrior = dreamboat.

emma cleveland (emma cleveland), Friday, 6 August 2004 04:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I prefer warrior prudes

SOME DAYS I CAN'T DECIDE BETWEEN ELLIOTT SMITH AND JIM O'ROURKE.

the former is deathly dull, the latter incredible. hmmmm....

stephen, Friday, 9 May 2008 23:06 (eighteen years ago)

WHY THE FUCK WON'T HE MAKE ANOTHER ALBUM THAT SOUNDS LIKE BAD TIMING???? WHY DOES HE ALWAYS DICK AROUND WITH THIS LAPTOP AVANT-GARDE "NOISE" SHIT???

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 9 May 2008 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

Used to play Happy Days at full volume in gas station parking lots as if it were intimidating rap music.

^^^^ MUST LEARN HOW TO PLAY THE GUITAR LIKE THIS

Mr. Snrub, Friday, 9 May 2008 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

Bad Timing is not just beautiful, it's great musical comedy - impressive for being all instrumental. That first time the horns started up I was dropped out of school and spending the summer almost entirely alone in an empty loft in my parents' house and I started to laugh.

Eureka has similar punch lines, such as the electric dentist's drill sound-alike solo.

bamcquern, Friday, 9 May 2008 23:25 (eighteen years ago)

The guy's a genius and I love him. Best mixer in the world today, and a pretty fucking fabulous musician in his own right too.

Scik Mouthy, Saturday, 10 May 2008 06:25 (eighteen years ago)

I saw Mark Richardson put "94 the Long Way" in the first place in his most recent column about perfect songs. I couldn't agree more.

I appreciate the breadth of Jim's work. I admit that I go to the pop albums more frequently, but the others are just as impressive.

"Insignificance" is underrated. The first side of it is hot.

Bill in Chicago, Saturday, 10 May 2008 13:02 (eighteen years ago)

actually, Jackson 5 was first place :p

stephen, Saturday, 10 May 2008 21:07 (eighteen years ago)

I saw Mark Richardson put "94 the Long Way" in the first place in his most recent column about perfect songs.

That was sort of what inspired the revive. I read that column, then put on Bad Timing and Insignificance.

jaymc, Sunday, 11 May 2008 07:56 (eighteen years ago)

one year passes...

I want everything's he's ever done solo and with zero 7 but mostly solo. I am a completist of his solo output.

markge1688, Friday, 19 March 2010 17:27 (sixteen years ago)

I freaking am a Jim O'Rourke completist, well as long as we're talking about his solo output.

markge1688, Friday, 19 March 2010 17:28 (sixteen years ago)

any thoughs on the 2XCD Long Night?

Palpatean Mists (Lowell N. Behold'n), Friday, 19 March 2010 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

he worked with zero 7???

djh, Saturday, 20 March 2010 10:28 (sixteen years ago)

It seems an unlikely match. They did put Ghost Ships In a Storm on their Back to Mine comp though.

mmmm, Saturday, 20 March 2010 15:20 (sixteen years ago)

that's how I first heard him

CaptainLorax, Saturday, 20 March 2010 15:26 (sixteen years ago)

what did he do with them?

oh man, Insignificance is so good

markers, Monday, 27 December 2010 22:48 (fifteen years ago)

it's all about the bad timing + happy days 1-2 punch in '97

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 19:53 (fifteen years ago)

been digging the visitor since i finally got it last month. as the liners recommend, it sounds really good played loud, on speakers. not a "loud" album obviously, but the volume kinda enhances the spaciousness of the recording.

tylerw, Tuesday, 28 December 2010 19:56 (fifteen years ago)

has anybody ever heard disengage?

plax (ico), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 20:04 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I still need to hear my copy of The Visitor on a proper O'Rourke approved stereo, although I did hear it on a decent quality car audio system and thought it sounded plenty nice. It's still a bit too much like a buddy movie soundtrack for my tastes. I mean EVERYTHING pretty much sounds better on huge speakers; making an album with that in mind doesn't make O'Rourke some kind of genius auditory auteur.

I can take a youtube that's seldom seen, flip it, now it's a meme (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 20:22 (fifteen years ago)

nah, you're right, just that i had originally listened on headphones and it kind of breezed past me, but on speakers it was pretty lovely.

tylerw, Tuesday, 28 December 2010 20:24 (fifteen years ago)

Disengage is awesome. This summer when my roommate was working on painting a series of portraits of me we listened to it a lot during the sitting. Every track is like a huge arc — my favorite moment is when one of the tracks breaks into this riot of polyrhythmic sine wave beeps.

=(^ • ‿‿ • ^)= (corey), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

well i've like a young persons guide to drowning since i dled it but seeing as how i dled it during the soulseek era i have never heard the rest of the album.

plax (ico), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

slsk lives

the 'im happy & i'm singing' reish is awes

Rockcrit from the Tuoms (nakhchivan), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 20:35 (fifteen years ago)

Also the giant 2-disc "Long Night" is underrated I think — it's probably the slowest-moving of all his ambient music and works very well when you need to fill your ears with something but don't want to be distracted from your thoughts.

=(^ • ‿‿ • ^)= (corey), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 20:37 (fifteen years ago)

― tylerw, Tuesday, December 28, 2010 3:24 PM Bookmark

I might be wrong, I mean I didn't try it and maybe there is something special about the particular way the record is mixed for large speakers.

I can take a youtube that's seldom seen, flip it, now it's a meme (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 28 December 2010 21:04 (fifteen years ago)

agree that Long Night is awesome & underrated. i have Disengage but haven't paid it much attention yet -- will correct this asap

did anyone shell out for the bacharach tribute? kind of forgot about that one.

tylerw, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 16:50 (fifteen years ago)

it's exactly how you think it is — gorgeous arrangements for songs that grate after one listen

=(^ • ‿‿ • ^)= (corey), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 16:57 (fifteen years ago)

does that mean you're not a bacharach fan in general or ... ?

tylerw, Wednesday, 29 December 2010 23:08 (fifteen years ago)

The more wistful songs like "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" and "Trains and Boats and Planes" work really well, the latter because O'Rourke himself sings (I actually wish he'd done all the vocals instead of the guests he got for the other songs) — but the other versions just make me wish I was listening to the originals done by singers who are actually good.

=(^ • ‿‿ • ^)= (corey), Wednesday, 29 December 2010 23:17 (fifteen years ago)

ah, gotcha.

This is a familiar complaint re: Burt's own voice, isn't it?

Well, I like Burt's voice! I don't like Yoshimi P-We's voice.
