Everytime I hear the Stockholm Song....In my head I am singing "...Lumber up, limbo down..."

The bass line is almost identical...way more present on the Stockholm song, which I like, but Bryan Ferry kills it on the Roxy song...I can't decide which is better.

I love Ferry's delivery during the verses, but I agree those choruses are too bombastic for their own good. And lord, that outro...

You're on crack for even suggesting this one. It's not even worth an answer. The collective sum of the Stockholm Monsters catalog doesn't add up to "Love Is the Drug."

I knew I could only resist this thread for so long. "E.W." isn't as good as "Love is the Drug," but Roxy Music's entire catalog can't hold a candle to the "How Corrupt Is Rough Trade?/Kan Kill!" 12"

Alma Mater may have stretched the Stockholm Monsters' capabilities a little thinly over an album, but for the singles Fairy Tales and Party Line and the b-side National Pastimes, they are worth their weight in gold. I'll have to dig out that 12", John, as I haven't played it in at least a decade...maybe I'll think fonder of it now.

Atnevon, When I said Bryan Ferry Kills it, I meant it in a positive way. It's totally over-the-top, but it rules.

Ok, Love is the Drug is probably a better song than E.W., but does anyone see the similarity twix the two?

Stockholm Monsters are more consistant overall, compaired to Roxy...who quickly became dreadful at the dawn of the 80's.

Militia on the Alma Mater Plus CD sends me into a tizzy.

Ned's right - it's almost an apples-and-oranges thing - the earlier stuff was self-conscious art rock (which I like lots!) but Avalon is a near-perfect setpiece. I wouldn't better/worse them, but if I could only spare one, I'd take Avalon because of its overwhelming emotionalism

I'm also with JD re: Avalon, but possibly on my own in liking Flesh and Blood better.

But much as I love Roxy any ten seconds of any Stockholm Monsters track is worth more than the whole of Roxy. Canada Briggs is completely off-the-money re Alma Mater - an astonishing record even by their standards - my 1980's in 40 minutes of heartbreak/hope/despair/fun/......The best.

Avalon is more than a bit samey. I was very disappointed when i first listened to it maybe a month ago. I also ran into a mailbox whilst listening, which may have affected its worth in my eyes.

Of the post-faux breakup recordings, I'm going to say that I like Manifesto best, though I've only yet heard the singles. Angel Eyes is fantastic.

The first half of the first album is the best side they ever released (especially if you count Virginia Plain). I think For Your Pleasure is the most accomplished of their releases.

nine months pass...

I can't remember what the hell "E.W" sounds like but I remember enjoying it. "Love is the Drug" is splendid, even the OH! WHOOOOOOOOA-OH! parts that predict The Teardrop Explodes (and there's a song on Roxy Music which Julian Cope blatantly ripped off of for "Safesurfer").
