Lucien n' Luciano - Blind Behaviour.

Deserves its own thread i think; album of the year so far? certainly the best electronic album for a long while. Funny that there is a "Does Ricardo Villalobos remind anyone else of Carl Graig?" since Blind Behaviour (the track) sounds like the best thing carl craig never wrote, incredible. The vocal tracks are fucking great too, especially the Sylvianesque "Madre, Mother and Mere". The More straight down the line Microhouse of "Alain Brito" is classic, of course but strangley also reminds me of Carl Craig too (his Cesaria Evora remix for example). Anyway - truly a phenomenal record.

Going to see this guy play live at Optimo tonight, will rock i think.

Ach - should read...

Mmm, I should love this one more than I actually do for some reason. Those Black Dogish tracks like 'Future Senses' are amazing but what almost ruins the album is that middle track 'La Ondita'. Ugh.

Omar (Omar), Sunday, 16 May 2004 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

...if only he had replaced 'La Ondita' with something like 'Alpine Rocket' it would have been close to perfection though. Ah well.

Omar (Omar), Sunday, 16 May 2004 13:22 (twenty-two years ago)

i haven't listened to this album enough for it to really sink in, but yeah that show tonight will probably be excellent

tricky disco, Sunday, 16 May 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

agree with omar that 'la ondita' is horrible but the rest is pretty fantastic. much as i love 'alcahofa', i think this has garnered more repeat listenings.

his singles have all been pretty stunning too with particular love going to the bruestchecke (sp?) 12"s.

jed - see you down the front!

stirmonster, Sunday, 16 May 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

what a disappointment luciano was last night, didnt rock at all. i was really looking forward to it but it was quite boring really, especially as his recorded stuff is pretty interesting.

ladyintheradiator (ladyinradiator), Monday, 17 May 2004 16:06 (twenty-two years ago)

really? i thought he was wonderful.

stirmonster, Monday, 17 May 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

I love this disc and pretty much all the stuff he's done but i find his live shows pretty dull. the three times i've seen him, he started with the same track (not surprisingly, the opener on his Live at Weetamix disc on Max.Ernst) and none of the sets really went anywhere from there. i, too, wanted (and was prepared) to be blown away with his live show. just wasn't happening for me tho

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Monday, 17 May 2004 16:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm so gutted I missed this!

(I got yr text colin, sorry I didn't reply [no credit] plus ws at home anyway [i.e. parents'].)

cozen (Cozen), Monday, 17 May 2004 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

[related to lucien via country of birth and/or collaboration]

any info/thoughts on dandy jack, argenix brito and micro man appreciated ...

dh, Saturday, 22 May 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

re ken's comments: i saw/heard luciano play live once and it was fantastic. it was very weetamix-esque (i'd imagine his shows have changed since), but it just hit a sweet spot with me over a big soundsystem. it was at mutek last year and the band from senor coconut slowly started joining him near the end of his set. it's hard to beat improvised moments like that and the crowd ate it up. delicious!

tricky disco, Saturday, 22 May 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

well, this is sorta strange cuz i was actually at that show too. i do regret not sticking it out to see the senor coco guys join him but considering the set started pretty much the exact same way the two previous times i saw him did (uh, syntax, grammar, ken?), i was put off and only stayed for an hour ...

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Saturday, 22 May 2004 20:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Ugh, I was expecting to love this album but really hate it. It's all a bit too 'tasteful 90s electronica' for my liking, like shades of Lamb or something... i mean, yeah, it's listenable but it's all head, no heart, and definitely no genitals.

And that goddamn "lets get funky" or similar groove-house cliche sample track in the middle of it is just awful.

Jacob (Jacob), Sunday, 23 May 2004 07:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I heard from a couple of friends that the optimo gig ws a bit predictable and boring. but I don't trust them too much. I'm still sick I didn't go. what did he play, _jed/stirmonster?

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 23 May 2004 11:56 (twenty-two years ago)

predictable and boring? how queer!

i didn't recognise anything he played at all. not one sound except perhaps for a few percussion loops from the 'blind behaviour' album. he built it up really well, like a dj set and while it got quite intense, it was never banging. sonically, it was in the vein of his cadenza releases but he would bring in the most ecstatic noises i've heard in electronic music in a long long time. at points i really felt like i was on drugs - i love it when music negates the need to get chemically enhanced. it was also probably the first time that i have heard the sub club sound system truly utilised to its maximum potential. (apart from when i play of course - hee!)

i guess if you were standing around listening and analysing it, it might have seemed boring (but never predictable) but this was a club set for people who wanted to dance rather than a deep listening experience for the spotters.

personally, i have been on a long term crusade to reclaim the trance word from the awful connotations that that word now conjures. luciano was pure trance.

stirmonster, Sunday, 23 May 2004 14:06 (twenty-two years ago)

:)

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 23 May 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ken, i think you just need to stay in more. (kidding of course)

i think the thing i liked about luciano's set last year was that it was a club set for people who wanted to dance rather than a deep listening experience for the spotters

indeed.

re trance: yeah! those cadenza singles are EPIC.

tricky disco, Sunday, 23 May 2004 17:37 (twenty-two years ago)

luciano and quenum, 'orange mistake' is amazing. seriously my favourite thing for two years

Barnaby (Barnaby), Friday, 4 June 2004 13:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm glad twitch said that about trance. All this stuff keeps making me think of the word but I've been scared to say it.

N. (nickdastoor), Monday, 7 June 2004 21:13 (twenty-two years ago)

is it time for a microtrance thread? kaito, luciano, magnet . . .

etc, Monday, 7 June 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

has lucien released any mix albums/dj sets?

dh, Friday, 18 June 2004 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

No he hasn't, to the best of my knowledge. And Cadenza has been a bit ropier than I had hoped...

___ (___), Friday, 18 June 2004 12:15 (twenty-one years ago)

He's got a live PA album called "Live @ Weetamix." I think it's on the Raster Norton label.

Philippe (Philippe), Friday, 18 June 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Here is a dj set but I never heard it:

http://www.discogs.com/release/227059

I like La Ondita its kinda silly.

hector (hector), Friday, 18 June 2004 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Weetamix is on Max.Ernst, i think

ken taylrr (ken taylrr), Friday, 18 June 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I really like everything I've heard from the album. It's like Process but not boring!

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Saturday, 19 June 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

seven months pass...
There is a Sense Club Mutek set floating around that is absolutely SMOKIN'. I am kind of obsessed with Luciano at the moment.

adam.r.l. (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 16:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyone know the release date for his new mixcd though? (on zee Mental Groove iirc?)

Stuff like 'Orange Mistake' and his 'Migracion' rmx make me hate Blind Behaviour even more.

Omar (Omar), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 18:33 (twenty-one years ago)

The awesome Mentam Groove comp I just found in Paris for v. cheap has reminded me how "Future Senses" is the secret best track on the album.

Why do you hate it Omar?

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 8 February 2005 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Well Tim, hard to explain. I love his Black Dogish tracks like Future Senses and all his collaborations are amazing expansive stuff...which Blind Behaviour isn't, it just sounds like he...crushed expansive 10-minute tracks into 4 minutes and everything suddenly just sounds too crowded (with added "funny" voice). Ah sorry, this doesn't help.

Omar (Omar), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

orange mistake went for 25 euros on ebay a couple of days ago! i cant bleieve it, that tune is awesome. some dude told me its be reissued tho

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 9 February 2005 22:41 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Tim, the Villalobos/Luciano "Something Bad" track gets a mention here:

http://www.stylusmagazine.com/ipod/archive/001528.html

I have an mp3 of it and I love it! It makes me think of that James Holden mix of Brtiney Spears - clicky and breathy and thrilling.

rive.r (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Big up Michael F. Gill!

rive.r (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha Omar already answered my question! I dunno, I can understand the criticisms but Blind Behaviour is mostly such a joy to listen to.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 22 March 2005 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

That 3 hour Luciano/Villalobos live set @ Mutek last year is indeed smoking!

He has a recent radio DJ mix from La Boum De Luxe floating around which is also great.

Blind Behavior owns me.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 23 March 2005 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

three months pass...
OMG the amelie thing!

a real live British pub hooligan (nordicskilla), Sunday, 26 June 2005 19:24 (twenty years ago)

Maybe y'all knew this already seeing as this was released, what, three years ago. But if not...

a real live British pub hooligan (nordicskilla), Sunday, 26 June 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

would somebody please YSI or gmail me that Amelie track. I've got most everything else he's done so if you want something in return, please ask.

biz, Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:14 (twenty years ago)

is it something to do with that film?

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:15 (twenty years ago)

It's got the piano from the Amelie theme.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:16 (twenty years ago)

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)

There are *two* Amelie tracks! So good, I'll YSI later if it doesn't show.

mike h. (mike h.), Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:43 (twenty years ago)

What about the Grauzone thing?

a real live British pub hooligan (nordicskilla), Sunday, 26 June 2005 22:48 (twenty years ago)

Adam, thanks for the recommendation. *Love it*

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 26 June 2005 23:00 (twenty years ago)

i'd like to hear the Grauzone. listening to the original now.

jed_ (jed), Sunday, 26 June 2005 23:01 (twenty years ago)

Oooh, and these are excellent too!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 26 June 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

The second one = WOW.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Sunday, 26 June 2005 23:07 (twenty years ago)

Thank you! I've been trying to get this for so long. Almost spent a bundle on the white label but couldn't justify the cost...now i might needt to buy it anyway.

biz, Sunday, 26 June 2005 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Mr and Mrs Luciano, for having such a wonderful wonderful son!!!

a real live British pub hooligan (nordicskilla), Monday, 27 June 2005 00:41 (twenty years ago)

One of the Amelie tracks is on Live @ Weetamix. It comes as such a shock to hear the familiar tune emerge from out of (what are for Luciano) such muscular percussive grooves.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 27 June 2005 04:30 (twenty years ago)

That discogs.com review is perfect!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 27 June 2005 06:15 (twenty years ago)

Do you say "Loo-chee-ah-no" or "Loo-see-ah-no"? I have recently switched to the former.

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

it's loo-se-ah-no

manuel (manuel), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

:(

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

>;(

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 29 June 2005 19:21 (twenty years ago)

That deep hollow sound on the last track on the album makes me ecstatic and ill at the same time!
