havin caught a little bit of the movie "Singles" last night and also reading the OK computer thread, I got to thinking about bands who've been touted as the saviors of rock and the whole idea in general.

how long has it been going on? I can imagine it first starting in the late 60's, but did it really? which bands have been called saviors of rock? and finally, does anyone think that this question is in any way legitimate?

GnR were hailed as saviours of rock. That's the earliest one I can think of in my time as a music fan (that is, there may have been others in my lifetime, but they were the first I can actually recall being described as such).

The Darkness would appear to be saviours of rock also. Which is bollocks. Rock doesn't need saving therefore the question is pants and the idea hyped up by NME to sell more copies to gullible punters who can't work that out for themselves.
