Albums for when you're in a shitty mood...

Alright...I'm only 15, so maybe that will help this story have a little more credibility. But...my girlfriend and I who have been dating for 8 or so months just got in trouble and won't be allowed to hang out anymore. I'm so upset/angry at the same time, and I really need to blast some music today. I've already got Astral Weeks and Agætis Byrjun lined up, but what else shoud I listen to?

Reagan's Dead, Sunday, 6 June 2004 16:09 (twenty-two years ago)

So, if you're upset/angry, are you sure you want to play introspective and calming music like Sigur Ros or Van?

If not, and you do want to play music that will preserve your shitty music, I recommend the Tindersticks first album. Always works for me.

At least he's not throwing on Limp Bizket and breaking shit.

I suggest Neil Young - On The Beach, the entire album has a mood of feeling-shitty-falling-apart-but-trying-to-accept-it.

David Allen (David Allen), Sunday, 6 June 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd break shit too if I heard Limp Bizkit!

peepee (peepee), Sunday, 6 June 2004 17:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Second On the Beach. Plastic Ono Band too. If you're feely ultra-shitty.

You could also pop on Mike Batt's rabbit epic Bright Eyes, but maybe that's just me.

Keith Watson (kmw), Sunday, 6 June 2004 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll just keep off this thread.

That second Auteurs album's a good call actually, Noodle Vague. It probably has that sort of mood in that Haines was still angry at not having won the Mercury Music Prize for (the stupendous) "New Wave" in 1993...

For me, alack, alas, I had been well unceremoniously dumped by a dame a few years back after a brief, intense - for me anyway - fling. I took a refuge in Scott Walker's "Scott III"... which was either the best or worst choice, as you can imagine. I associate the upside of the relationship - which doesn't seem a big thing now but was a crucial early step - with the Avalanches' album and Boards of Canada's "Geogaddi".

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 6 June 2004 22:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Cowboy is still my favourite Auteurs album. Apart from the anger, it's got an exhausted sadness that Haines has never done as well again, for me. "A Sister Like You" is really one of the most heartbreaking songs I've ever heard.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Sunday, 6 June 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

you should go get a job, shitface.

asf, Sunday, 6 June 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

It was the first album I'd heard with Haines taking lead vocals (i.e. I'd heard "England Made Me" by BBR first, just after that was out), and it remains a record I'm very fond of, though interestingly Haines himself disparages it - at least in comparison to his other works. ;)
It has a really consistent mood, even if one or two songs are weaker than the standard. I eagerly await his next solo record, as his two in 2001 were fantastic; since then, "Passionoia" disappointed and "Das Capital" seemed a slightly unnecessary exercise... it did point up the greatness of how oeuvre, but was it ever going to hook newcomers? The new material was good though.

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 6 June 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

'his' not 'how oeuvre'... dear me. :)

Tom May (Tom May), Sunday, 6 June 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Take heroin. It doesn't really matter what's playing then.

Sasha (sgh), Monday, 7 June 2004 02:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Motorhead "No Sleep Till Hammersmith", trust me. Or the Fall, doesn't much matter which. Not "Dragnet", maybe.

Townes van Zandt - any of them
Arthur Russell - "Another thought"
"Ready to die"
Agoria - "Blossom"

Jacob (Jacob), Monday, 7 June 2004 02:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Personally I don't go real heavy when I'm upset. For me, Exile On Main Street by the Rolling Stones is the most perfect album ever made. I cannot be in a bad mood after hearing it, so I'd go with that. Always preferred up tempo stuff when I was upset. Now I suppose you could always do what Pink Floyd did and go with "Wish You Were Here" Maybe a bit cliche, but hey, it worked when they wrote it, so why not listen to it and feel the same? Or something...

Bryan Moore (Bryan Moore), Monday, 7 June 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Astral Weeks is one I always play too, so I get where you're going (I don't play Agaetis Byrjun 'cept when it's snowing, but I can still identify with the mood). On that note, Boards of Canada's "Geogaddi" can't be overly recommended. It's exactly what you're looking for I think, just be sure to stick with it. If it means anything, Geogaddi is my all-time favorite album.

Yo La Tengo's "I Can Hear the Heart Beating as One" might recall your relationship w/ your girl. Very moody.

Songs: Ohia's "Magnolia Electric Co." is ultimate catharsis, as well as the Flaming Lips' "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" on the more playful side. And dare I say it, Nick Drake's "Pink Moon."

I've only just turned 17, so maybe that gives ME some cred-- firsthand experience being a young, rock-obsessed teen relying on albums to be put back on the feet. First ILM post too. A day late, but whatever. Hope all goes well with you.

Øystein H-O (Øystein H-O), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Geogaddi evokes too much of a grim state of mind in me. I'm definitely of the opinion that downer music can prolong that shitty mood, and not otherwise. I used to slamdance to Black Flag's Damaged to burn all the pent-up rage away. But I gotta go with the underdog here. I used to rip on Modest Mouse, but I got The Moon And Antarctica a few days ago, and it's quickly becoming one of my favorite albums for that kind of mood. The more introspective songs are just plain beautiful and strangely therapeutic. Oh man, I had a bit too much to drink.
