Veteran music stars such as Sir Paul McCartney, David Bowie and Morrissey have been included in the shortlist for the inaugural Mojo magazine awards.
The Mojo Honours List winners will be announced at the Banqueting House in Whitehall, London, on 22 June.

The list was set up to honour elder artists often overlooked for awards.

"This is about music that's built to last and that has provided us with the soundtrack to our lives," said Mojo editor-in-chief Phil Alexander.

The shortlist for the Mojo icon award, voted for by the listeners of Mojo Radio, features David Bowie, Kate Bush, Marvin Gaye, Morrissey and Prince.

There's long been a need to properly honour the extraordinary talents

The Mojo inspiration award category, which organisers say reflects artists who have influenced others, includes Joe Strummer, Arthur Lee, The Smiths, David Bowie and Johnny Cash.

Nominees for the Mojo songwriting award are Sir Paul McCartney, Ray Davies from The Kinks, Paul Weller, Elvis Costello and the late Nick Drake.

More artists will be chosen to enter the Mojo Hall of Fame during the day.

Other categories in the awards include the classic album award and the Mojo medal, which will be awarded to an industry member for unsung work.

Rock anniversary

"Other awards celebrate the biggest names and the best releases of the preceding year," said Mr Alexander.

"We believe there's long been a need to properly honour the extraordinary talents of the artists, bands and songwriters whose careers have been responsible for enhancing our rich musical culture," he said.

"It's absolutely appropriate, therefore, that the inaugural Mojo Honours List comes on the 50th anniversary of the birth of rock 'n' roll," he said, a reference to the 1954 release of Elvis Presley's That's Alright Mama.

The event is expected to be a small, non-televised ceremony.

If its voted by the readers look for the beatles, dylan and pink floyd winning every year.
If its voted by the writers....
... so they have yet another excuse to put them on the cover.

"We believe there's long been a need to properly honour the extraordinary talents of the wealthy much-lauded artist now suffering from incontinence or the burden of a colostomy bag, songwriters whose careers have been responsible for enhancing our rich musical culture," he said."

whats the criteria for their awards

Great wealth and fame through composition of music plus ownership of an ostomy bag or the potential to own some manner of ostomy bag.

Geoff Travis is vaguely good but the rest of this is stupid even for a rockist like me

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

this is amazing - aren't those awards all for the same thing?! so they just made a list of people they wanted to give awards to and divided them up? madness.

It does seem pretty redundant.

i forgot to list one other award which takes the biscuit:

The Red Hot Chili Peppers were awarded the Mojo Maverick Award their "staying power".

"Staying Power"?

Alternatively, RHCP help edit the Mojo Magazine, get lots of free publicity ...and they get a mojo award for their effort chucked in, gratis.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 13:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd like to see how the inevitable WORD
awards will differ from that list.

where's the fcken MUZIK awards when we need them?

piscesboy, Tuesday, 22 June 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

The Mojo Mavericks Award: The Mavericks

The Mojo Specials Award: The Specials

Both for the tenth year in succession

Dadaismus (Dada), Tuesday, 22 June 2004 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

i think these awards, are like the Hall of Fame: once you have been honoured for a particular award - that's it.

However there is plenty of scope to pick up awards in other categories.
