What are the man's ten best releases, in your humble opinion?
You can include box sets etc.

fuck?

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

well, it's hard, is all. after those eight, I kinda like the rest equally.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:44 (twenty-two years ago)

blonde on blonde
highway 61 revisited
basement tapes
live at "royal albert hall" 66
bringing it all back home
john wesley harding
the times they are-a changing
nashville skyline
another side of bob dylan
halloween mask

i have two only recently officially released bootlegs but theyre damn good. i also have tendency towards releases involving the Band. ah well. ive not yet gotten into blood on the tracks. i should try again soon. and by basement tapes i mean the genuine basement tapes but the officially released ones as well (recorded in the correct time frame). which might also not count. but theyre too cozy to be left out.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)

wait, I fibbed. Substitute Desire for Self Portrait.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

i also havent fully gotten into time out of mind and love and theft. do they really belong in the top 10? does anyone here really like desire? i can usually only stand it. i usually stop after hurricane and isis. then he starts thinking hes a gyspy or something. and joey is impossible.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I love Desire!!! It's wonderful. Lots of people love it. I have played it at least 250 times.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

And Joey is wonderful. Not long enough though. Should be a whole side.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:54 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually prefer Desire to Blood On The Tracks. Most people probably don't feel that way. But what do I know? I don't know most people!

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah "Desire" is only occasionally listenable for me; the material is transformed in my mind by the Rolling Thunder versions though, so that rescues it, and allows me to see it anew every so often.
"Time" and "Love" are one and a half brilliant albums. Since there's loads of stuff there (I like it when Dylan's profligate with his offerings to us) there's much to enjoy and discover, even when he's not on top form. But yeah they are that good. I've not heard everything since the 70s work, but I think they're the necessary next chapter of greatness in his work that seemed unlikely to come to us in the 80s..

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Street Legal
Blonde on Blonde
Love & Theft
Highway 61
Blood on the Tracks

Nashville Skyline
Time Out of Mind

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

It's too one-note, that's the problem. But it's scraggly roughnecked melting-pot charms, in that rare moment, are
just right for me

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Now that's quite a list Charlie

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, I have to say I like the Desire stuff better on that Rolling Thunder live disc that came out a couple years back. THAT is one great disc. In fact it would probably make my POX. In fact, why don't a do a POX-

Another Side
Bringing it All Back Home
Highway 61 Revisited
Genuine Basement Tapes
New Morning
Bootleg Series 1-3
Bootleg Series 4 (Royal Albert Hall)
Bootleg Series 5 (Rolling Thunder)
Blood on the Tracks

hmm.. i'd probably also throw on a '65 live disc. Electric Black Night Crash or Long Distance Operator.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha! Another New Morning fan. I wouldn't put it on my POX, but I definitely have a soft spot for that album, especially the title track and "The Man In Me" (mostly for its Lebowski connection)

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

title track, "Day of the Locusts", "Father of Night" ... and "If Not For You" is absolutely one of my favorite songs of his.

Broheems (diamond), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

yep, forgot about that one. Shit, I gotta go dig that one out.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

only Charlie's from the last two albums so far...

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

only Charlie's chosen from the last two albums so far

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:17 (twenty-two years ago)

is what I meant to say dear romans and countrymen

Masked Gazza, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:18 (twenty-two years ago)

What can I say? It did take me a while to get into the last two, but I really quite like them both now. I can see why they aren't the best or whatever, but they've become two of my favorites. Single favorite is still Street Legal. Don't fuck with Street Legal. please.

Charlie Rose (Charlie Rose), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 03:22 (twenty-two years ago)

ouch, well I can't even hold its hand, let alone fuck with it

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:17 (twenty-two years ago)

nashville skyline...no accounting for taste.
blood on the tapes contains the original NYC versions of blood on the tracks songs--mostly superior to the rerecordings.

GREATEST HITS VOL II good call! I LEFT THAT FUCKER OUT. That is great.

rumple, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:18 (twenty-two years ago)

innarestin'. superior? in what way?

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:20 (twenty-two years ago)

first recordings of the songs, closer to the bone.

rumple., Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:23 (twenty-two years ago)

I've heard this so many tiems before, but I have to disagree on that one.
The Blood on the Tapes versions (some of which you can also check out on Bootleg 1-3) are indeed pretty bare and affecting but both musically and lyrically the subsequent fleshed-out BOTT versions are way superior.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:26 (twenty-two years ago)

you're nuts. ALL the lyric rewrites are worse.

rumple, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:27 (twenty-two years ago)

OK pick one to rub my nose in it.

rumple, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:28 (twenty-two years ago)

uh-hoh there goes my morning at work, then...

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:31 (twenty-two years ago)

you're telling me the rerecording of 'If You See Her, Say Hello' is superior? balderdash.

dylan rewrites are rarely superior. Ever heard the original Born in Time compared to the second one?

Here comes the Idiot Wind argument.

rumple, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Compare if you will:

If you see her, say hello
She might be in Tangiers
She left here last early spring
Is livin' there i hear
Say for me that i'm all right
Though things get kind of slow
She might think that i've forgotten her
Don't tell her it isn't so.

to:

If you see her, say hello
She might be in Tangiers
She left here last early spring
Is livin' there, i hear.
Say for me that I'm alright
Though new things come and go
She might think that i've forgotten her
Don't tell her it isn't so.

And yes, Idiot Wind is so obviously superior on BOTT that it doesn't need any quoting. The ORGAN!

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:38 (twenty-two years ago)

your point is? I stand by the first.

the exists a recording without that FUCKING ORGAN by the way.

bad overdub.

rumple, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:39 (twenty-two years ago)

'there exists."

I am fighting with a paramour while writing this, very trying. Blood on the ILM.

rumple, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

OK< I just played the NYC version back to back with the second one and I have come to the conclusion you are certifiably insane. The second one contains NONE of the rip-your-guts out of the first.

so nyah nyah

rumple, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:46 (twenty-two years ago)

man i love arguments likethis. i need to find me a copy.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Bob Dylan
The Freewheelin'
Highway 61 Revisited
Basement Tapes
Blonde on Blonde
Blood on the Tracks
Desire
Street Legal
Time Out of Mind
Bootleg 66 "Royal Albert Hall"

David A. (Davant), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

it's around. I do not mean to imply the released version is useless, case in point being Idiot Wind. And the sublime Buckets of Rain, which I believe only came later.

The Idiot Wind minus The Happy Organ solo is not in circulation, though I have heard it.

Dylan has a knack for the devastating album closers, eh?
"When He Returns." (that WAS the closer, right?)
"Shooting Star."
Sugar Babe."
etc

rumple, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 06:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Street Legal? Is it the lilting strains of Senor that do you in?

rumple, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

The Street Legal closer is the only redeeming feature of that album.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 07:06 (twenty-two years ago)

someone actually really likes his debut album?

amateur!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 08:04 (twenty-two years ago)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 15:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Street Legal has several amazing songs: Changing of the Guard, No Time To Think, Is Your Love in Vain, Senor (one of his all-time greats), and Where Are You Tonight? The remastered version is a revelation--they got rid of that horrible "muffled" sound that plauged the album for years.

Is anyone compiling a master ranking?

JC-L (JC-L), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, my list would be quite pedestrian, with Bob Dylan the only relatively uncommon inclusion, and Highway 61 eternally at #1. So I'll leave it at that.

I'd cheerfully tabulate the results, but not here at work!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I love his debut, amateur!st -- sub-par wannabe Roy Acuff impersonations notwithstanding ;)

And shookout OTM re: Street Legal. Very underrated album. It also has sentimental value for me as it was released in the summer of the tour I first saw Dylan play live. He played in a field in England and I'd never seen anything like it.

David A. (Davant), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Considering only the studio albums (to make it easier on myself):

John Wesley Harding
Blonde on Blonde
Highway 61 Revisited
Blood on the Tracks
New Morning
Nashville Skyline
The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan
Bringing It All Back Home
Another Side of Bob Dylan

"Is anyone compiling a master ranking?"

This will be my next post!

Masked Gazza, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 00:44 (twenty-two years ago)

ILM's favourite Dylan (so far)

1 Highway 61 Revisited (18)
Blonde on Blonde (18)
3 Blood on the Tracks (13)
4 The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan (11)
5 Nashville Skyline (10)
6 Another Side of Bob Dylan (9)
Bringing It All Back Home (9)
8 Live 1966 "Royal Albert Hall" (8)
"Love and Theft" (8)
10 Time Out of Mind (7)
11 John Wesley Harding (6)
The Basement Tapes (6)
The Bootleg Series 1-3 (6)
14 Desire (5)
15 Bob Dylan (4)
The Times They Are A-Changin' (4)
World Gone Wrong (4)
18 New Morning (3)
Genuine Basement Tapes (3)
Planet Waves (3)
Street Legal (3)
Oh Mercy (3)

All the rest have one or two votes each, except for these, which remain unvoted for:

Slow Train Coming
Saved
Empire Burlesque
Knocked Out Loaded
Down in the Groove
Dylan & the Dead [live]
Under the Red Sky
Good as I Been to You
MTV Unplugged [live]
Masked and Anonymous
Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits
Greatest Hits, Vol. 3

Masked Gazza, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

One vote for 'Slow Train,' and for GH Vol. III because it disproves the myth that Dylan's '80s work was all terrible (plenty of good songs, just not good-all-the-way-thru albums).

shookout (shookout), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 01:50 (twenty-two years ago)

someone actually really likes his debut album?

it's excellent stuff, very well performed - i especially like "talkin' new york blues."

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 01:51 (twenty-two years ago)

i think it's fine, but not really terrifically exceptional by the standards of the folk revival.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 01:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Masked Gazza is the only one who has voted for Self Portrait so far.

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 02:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Someone should vote for Knocked Out Loaded, just for "Brownsvill Girl," which is more than worth the price (even if you can get in on GHIII)

Scott CE (Scott CE), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 03:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Nashville Skyline
Blonde on Blonde

Bringing it all Back Home

Sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm frankly astonished that "Nashville Skyline" polled higher than
"Bringing It All Back Home", but then I don't value the former record
very highly.

de, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Freewheelin'
The Times They Are A'Changing

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 03:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm frankly astonished that the incredibly boring Time Out of Mind polled higher than JWH..

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 05:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i guess it's the influence of the victoria's secret ad

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 06:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Damn, I left John Wesley Harding off of my own 10, which was an oversight. But Time Out of Mind is pretty much the opposite of boring. And I honestly haven't even seen this infamous ad yet. No, TOoM is an album that I'll never tire of.

David A. (Davant), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 06:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Not Dark Yet. "Incredibly boring." Pass the smelling salts.

Dylan + Cash (on Nashville Skyline, at least) = George Jones + Gene Pitney

rumple, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 06:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh Self Portrait, yeah I forgot that one. (that makes my list up to ten now)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 09:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Half of TOOM is really boring. Stuff like 'Standing in the Doorway' or 'To Make You Feel My Love', and the despicable Lanois sound that runs throughout (question of taste I guess), really turned me off.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The big shock to me is the poor showing of Oh Mercy. That one has some great tracks, and no dud ones. I guess I'm the only one here who likes Vol. 5 best out of the bootleg series. Not that 1966 isn't a more dramatic or important show, I just find myself playing the next one more often.

JC-L (JC-L), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 12:24 (twenty-two years ago)

The love for Oh Mercy also remains a mystery to me. As far as the 80s are concerned, I'd take Slow Train and Shot of Love over it.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Slow Train has some good songs, but some pretty bad ones, too (like "Man Named the Animals" or whatever it's called). "Political World", "Man in the Long Black Coat", "Most of the Time", and "Shooting Star" are all great. Haven't heard Shot of Love, but I probably should. I get the feeling this thread is going to end up costing me some money...

JC-L (JC-L), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

It took some time, but now I love "Man Gave Names To All The Animals"! "Precious Angel" and "I Believe In You" are also pretty great.

Shot of Love would probably never qualify as great but is overall pretty pleasant and catchy.

Baaderoni (Fabfunk), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I guess I'm the only one here who likes Vol. 5 best out of the bootleg series.

You obviously missed my post.

This Street Legal love is intriguing. I've never heard it. Off to the dollar bin I go...

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

"oh mercy" is mediocre at best. i never understood why it gained all this praise and the follow-up, "under the red sky," was considered a profound letdown. they're not so far apart.

i too have problems with the lanois production sound, but for me the most off-putting aspect of recent dylan records is his voice, which has dwindled to a fifth or so, with phlegm to spare.

amateur!st (amateurist), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

1. Blood On The Tracks
2. Highway 61 Revisited
3. Blonde On Blonde
4. Oh Mercy
5. Desire
6. Time Out Of Mind
7. Infidels (would have ranked even higher had he kept "Blind Willie McTell" on it - clearly one of his best ever songs)
8. Planet Waves
9. John Wesley Harding
10.Street Legal

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 23:42 (twenty-two years ago)

rumple is absolutely bang on the money as regards the original version of Born In Time- absolutely one of the best things he's ever done, how it could have been left off Oh Mercy is a mystery to me...

Officer Pupp, Friday, 11 June 2004 13:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I love 'Shot of Love.' 'Property of Jesus' rocks. So does 'The Groom's Still Waiting at the Altar,' and 'Dead Man.' And, of course, there's 'Every Grain of Sand.'

It amazes me that people treat the '80s and early '90s a time when Dylan did mostly bad music. Granted, the albums are indeed inconsistant and full of some duds, but check this out:

'In the Garden,' 'Carribbean Wind,' 'Angelina,' 'Every Grain of Sand,' 'Jokerman,' 'Blind Wille McTell,' 'Foot of Pride,' 'I and I,' 'I'll Remember You,' 'Dark Eyes,' 'Brownsville Girl,' 'Most of the Time,' 'Shooting Star,' 'Man in the Long Black Coat,' 'Born in Time,' 'God Knows,' 'Dignity.'

More first-rate songs than 99% will write in their entire lifetimes.

shookout (shookout), Friday, 11 June 2004 16:08 (twenty-two years ago)

"Man in the Long Black Coat"

this is terrible
