so i'm getting more and more into country, starting with the great johnny cash i've discovered more or less after his death, shame on me.

i'm looking for anything (links, playlist...) to extend my knowledge into cow boy music.

i want some super dumb, raw, classic country songs or artists basically. Think of some stuffs you would put in a country vs dirty south xxtra dumb mixtape or sumthing.

i heard Timbaland mentioning some Bluegrass shit but everything i heard bluegrass-wise was a bit cheesy

thanks!

Tip: get down your local Oxfam, there's always a really good bluegrass/mountain music/Hank Williams comp available for like £1.50.

Try Tex Williams, Tex Ritter, Bob Wills, Eddie Noack, Arthur Smith, Flatt and Scruggs, early Dolly, Porter Wagoner, "Tennessee" Ernie Ford, Hank Snow, Gene Autry, Lightcrust Doughboys, Liz Anderson, Rose Maddox, Merle Travis, Les Paul and Mary Ford, Chet Atkins, Roger Miller, Roy Rogers, Wilf Carter, Roy Hogsed, Patti Page, Marvin Rainwater, Speedy West, Teddy Fell, Texas Jim Williams, Spade Cooley, Sons of Pioneers, Webb Pierce, Pee Wee King, McKinney sisters, and many others.

Hillbilly Boogie, Western Swing, Honky Tonk, Bluegrass and Yodeling/Singing Cowboys. It's all gold. Bear Family Records is one place to start, great for hard-to-find things. And there have been some super cheap box sets of this sort of stuff out on Proper Records.

In Berlin, country is all the rage (as is cowboy culture generally). See for instance:http://www.pingpongcountry.de (and I was fortunate enough to DJ one of these glorious nights - best night ever in B-Town).

And some of this bluegrass is damn hot. You know, just find Steve Martin's "King Tut" and flip it over. Man this guy was good at hoeing down.

believe it or not, there is also excellent country music out there that ISN'T just spinach and liver for ancient history majors (not that everything above fits that category, but lots of it does):

well, that smithsonian collection is sublime. some of the church music on it is incredible, hair-on-the-back-of-your-neck gear. i like liver, anyway.

four years pass...

Can somebody help me out trying to find out about a documentary I saw years ago on English television about women in country music, as far as I recall it was the last of a three part thing about country music in general. There was a bit about Dolly Parton writing Coat of Many Colors and a disproportionately high amount of stuff about KD Lang, but I remember the whole thing being really great and interesting and I can never fucking find out what it was called. I saw it maybe four years ago.

“Lost Highway: The History of Country Music.” is what it was called I think, does anyone know where I could find out more about this. Google is leaving me short so far

I was too amused by this academic exchange to let it go unshared:
