"Glycerine" is a pretty good song

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

ive been saying for a few years that bush's first album is the only album i ever regret owning/liking. that may be an exaggeration; there are plenty of things i regret owning and liking. however, DESTROY IT ALL. gavin rossdale hasnt written one song i can think of that doesnt end with him repeating the name of the song over and over in some EMPHATIC way.

peter smith (plsmith), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Some great melodies, but the deadliest lyrics (see "Everything Zen," "Machine Head") -- I love the song "Swallow," though, even if it's a straight Pixies knock-off. And it had a good video as well, if I remember correctly...

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Hell no.

The _Razorblade Suitcase_ (eesh) singles are OK. And the album following it (_The Science of Things_) is bright & shiny in that alt.rock way that I'm a sucker for (assuming I'm forgiving enough to gloss over Gavin's lyrical ... tendencies).

Neb, you saying "Swallowed" is biting "Gigantic"?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Rhymes with "blood".

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe "Swallowed" is my favorite of all songs that bare an obvious Pixies influence.

Easily Bush's most effortlessly anthemic song.
Neat short guitar solo. There's also a very nice outro that fades out.
All in all, as perfectly structured single for pop rock radio.

The angsty lyrics appeal to the self -nvolved narcisissm in me

"Sharp about everyone but yourself
I miss the one that I loved a lot
I'm with everyone and yet not"
If I was famous I most certainly would feel obligated to bitch about not being taken seriously. In fact, this is my supreme motivation for achieving any kind of fame or recognition. It is the opportunity to fullfill this embittered chip on the shoulder archetype.
"Speed Kilss" or "The People That We Love" is perhaps my favorite Nirvana rip off.
Their other singles don't do much for me. When Sixteen Stone blew up I remember finding the whole thing somewhat inexplicable.

Straight up DUD.

incidentally, has there ever been an interview with Gavin Rossdale that didn't culminate with him taking his shirt off at some point?

King Kobra (King Kobra), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I've noticed that Stone Temple Pilots get higher acclaim than Bush, even though Bush's good songs were way better than STP's, and their bad songs (which, yeah, was most of their catalog) were way better than STP's too.

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

The man sang "I don't beleive that Elvis is dead". I mean, like, that was a lyric in the song! Holy shit! A lyric like that, used in a song that's not meant to be fun/funny? Jesus' Christ's exploded hemaroids! DUD!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"Glycerine" is a pretty good song

Compared to what? That song has to be one of the most lackluster, uninspired, poorly arranged, sadly derivative pieces of shit I have heard in the last decade.

Bush is a mighty and unfaltering dud.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It's not saying much, but I would take the grunge second-wavers of the early 90's for my radio pap over the current Linkin Park/Hoobastank/rap-rock horseshit in a SECOND.

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Nick, that's what I meant by Gavin's lyrical ... tendencies.

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, you can also apply my adjectives to Gavin's lyrics as well. Except maybe for "poorly arranged," which makes less sense in the context of lyrics.

But certainly "lackluster, uninspired, and sadly derivative pieces of shit" would be accurate, no?

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Have you all forgotten my C/D Bush thread??

vleeetrmx21 (Leee), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry Leee... I never saw that other thread. You can rest assured that I'd have had the same opinion that I have here though. Bush is a sack of crap.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 21:02 (twenty-two years ago)

"Swallowed" was quite good.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

My version of "Glycerine" that I wrote the first time I ever got drunk called "Lysterine" is a bajillion times awesomer.

Lysterine - DON"T LET YOUR BREATH GET STINKY

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sticking by my Sixteen Stone > Nevermind statement. I like Bush's singles off the first album + "Swallowed." I wasn't actually aware that they released anything after that until recently.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Swallowed has a terrific Nirvana-rip video too. Neon cross, oooh edgy!

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I like how they wanted to distance themselves from the accusations of being Nirvana clones... and then hired Steve Albini to record their second album.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 22:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I like how they wanted to distance themselves from the accusations of being Nirvana clones... and then continued to sound like a shitty impersonation of Nirvana.

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 22:28 (twenty-two years ago)

See Martin? Now you're coming around!

vleeetrmx21 (Leee), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 22:30 (twenty-two years ago)

??!

martin m. (mushrush), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Utter, utter shit.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 22:51 (twenty-two years ago)

ALEX IN NYC, DO YOU LIKE BEYONCE?

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

fuck you and the horse you rode in on.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the strings at the end of Glycerine.

Melissa W (Melissa W), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

What are you listening to these days, Melissa?

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 02:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Other than "Glycerine," I mean.

Mark (MarkR), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 02:19 (twenty-two years ago)

horrible, horrible dud

wetmink (wetmink), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Their songs weren't always that bad. But just the idea of a British band trying to ape the American grunge sound at a time when grunge was very much on its way out and Britpop on its way it is terribly dud in itself.
