here's a music death that doesn't appear to be posted yet:

from Blabbermouth:
BATHORY mastermind Tomas "Quorthon" Forsberg was found dead in his apartment in Stockholm, Sweden on Monday, June 7, informed sources have confirmed to BLABBERMOUTH.NET. The 39-year-old son of Black Mark Records owner Börje Forsberg, long considered one of black metal's founders, died of an apparent heart failure. More information as it becomes available.

"Heart failure," eh? Alas. "Equimanthorn" is one of the greatest black metal songs ever. RIP you Nordic weirdo.

rasheed wallace (rasheed wallace), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

His place in the history books is assured. Things would have been vastly different without him. (who knows what things would have ended up looking like for metal?)

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 20:28 (twenty-two years ago)

this has ruined my day. 39?? Jeeeeesus. I mean, Oooooodin.

I got a few calls and emails today from various scandinavian sources but nobody seemed to be able to produce a solid confirmation - any official statements yet?

Siegbran (eofor), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a pity, though I'm not sure what the etiquette is for mourning black metal guys

BATHORY WILL IMPREGNATE SKULLS ETERNALLY
AS HE STRIKES DOWN THE MAMMON OF YOUR HYPOCRISY
FORE DEATH AWAITS US ALL

Fuckmastermetalist, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

if this is true i am sad. "under the sign of the black mark" was one of the first metal albums i bought based entirely on a bad review - which made the album sound so great i knew i had to have it.

gonna go put on a viking helmet and listen to "call from the grave" and "equimanthorn" over and over.

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

The black winds of the Nightspirit blow sadder today. The howls of the wolfen beasts who roam the forests of Valhalla will sound in mourning.

Vas Djifrens, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

RIP, warrior of the Black Spirits.

Vas Djifrens, Tuesday, 8 June 2004 23:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I would think that the wolfen beasts of Valhalla would be really excited. Their master is coming home!

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course, I say it as a figure of speech. But what is mourning on this plane is a greeting on the black side.

Vas Djifrens (latebloomer), Tuesday, 8 June 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I have seen Quorthon eat, and let me tell you, Odin's chef will have his work cut up for him, hi hi! For I would not desire to be a rabbit or a chicken on this man's plate.

Unsheath your knife, eat and drink from jewelled goblet your fill, great black one of the North ice wind, and do not spare the bones for you can suck also out their marrow, this is of course delicious.

His place in the history books is assured.

You're right:

If ever there was someone to fake his own demise, Quorthon is the guy, as the entire public record on the guy is 5% truth and 95% public imagination, doctored with a steady dosage of disinformation from Quorthon and his dad. I hope he reappears from the "afterlife," because he's THE architect of modern black metal, as far as I'm concerned.

I've hung out with the guy, and he's snotty, narcissistic, and really funny. Miles away from this:

But admirably amoral even wearing a cowboy hat. UNDER THE SIGN OF THE BLACK MARK is on the shortest possible list of classic heavy metal albums.

R.I.P.?

RIP. Not heard too much really but when i first bought Kerrang there was a feature on Bathory. Always saw Bathory lps 2nd hand quite cheap . Maybe I should pick 1 up. Where do you recommend I star?
Has Anyone Heard Solo Quorthon?

Christopher M, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

R.I.P.?

exactly

dleone (dleone), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Where do you recommend I star?

Leaving the "t" off of "start" because it looks like a cross iS SO VUKKING EVIL!!!

Under the Sign of the Black Mark
Nordland II
Blood on Ice

Under the Sign is where it all starts, the template for Emperor, Immortal & Satyricon.

eleven months pass...
I like The Return and I like Black Mark. But I only have enough money for one more record. Which one should it be, and why???

moley, Monday, 16 May 2005 08:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Nordland II or Blood Fire Death.

dog latin (dog latin), Monday, 16 May 2005 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

BLOOD FIRE DEATH

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Monday, 16 May 2005 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Definately Blood Fire Death or the debut. The first four are only ones you really need.

the todster (the todster), Monday, 16 May 2005 10:16 (twenty-one years ago)

thanks!

moley, Monday, 16 May 2005 21:35 (twenty-one years ago)

the debut is delightfully primitive.

latebloomer: the rebel sound of grits and bacon (latebloomer), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Sadly, my first thought upon reading this was "where will I get my Belle and Sebastian macs now?"

Morley Timmons (Donna Brown), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

fourteen years pass...

Just finished Blood Fire Death and I think it's a level above Black Mark. Never expected all those great guitar solos.

Feel I should get the albums in chronological order from now on but I'm a little impatient to find out what the later stuff sounds like.
