Music that reminds you of the video game you were playing at the time

Sometimes the association is so facking strong it's unavoidable, to wit:

Art of Noise, The FON Mixes -- Wolfenstein 3D
Art of Noise, In No Sense? Nonsense! -- Doom II
Stereolab, Dots and Loops -- Banjo-Kazooie
Kinks, Preservation Act 1 -- Ratchet & Clank
TISM, Hot Dogma -- Morrowind

Now when I hear the music, suddenly the memory of playing the video game hits me hard in the face. Does this happen to anyone else? Please say yes.

There are others, can't think of them now.

Fist me sideways with completely not-HTML tags. Sigh.

New No New Age Advanced Ambient Motor Music Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 02:53 (twenty-two years ago)

First time I ever smoked pot, I listened to the Flaming Lips' Transmission of the Sattellite Heart while my friends played MarioKart.

Sym (shmuel), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Wowee Zowee-Pilotwings 64, especially the "corpus christi/you're so misty" lyric for some odd reason. That's the strongest one for me. I'll try to think of some more.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 03:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Every early 90s song ever reminds me of Klax.

Late 96, I used to play this really crappy videogame that I can't even remember the name of, and I would listen to the "She's The One" soundtrack by Tom Petty, every day for.. well at least a week.

billstevejim, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 03:55 (twenty-two years ago)

soft cell - "sex dwarf" (while playing Super Mario Bros. in the mid-80's)

also OMD - "enola gay"

steeve mcqueen (steeve mcqueen), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

my girlfriend can't hear autechre's "tri repetae" without thinking of "castlevania III" for the NES. she pretty much refuses to listen to music while playing games, swears everytime she hears it after that she thinks of people swinging on ropes or jumping from platform to platform.

(doesn't bother me at all, though.)

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)

!!! + Soul Calibur II = intense

Sonny A. (Keiko), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Technotronic's Pump Up The Jam + River City Ransom for the NES.
That occupies a strangely satisfying place in my memory. I think it a glimpse of my personal Valhalla.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

yup, top 40 pop from 1989-1992 -> NES

Neneh Cherry, Jesus Jones, Janet Jackson, BelBivDevoe, etc.

also, I listened to my tapes of _Toys in the Attic_ and _Get Your Wings_ while playing River City Ransom for like a year...

Ultima 5 + "Janie's Got a Gun" = 1989 in a nutshell for me.

Kingfish Disraeli (Kingfish), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 04:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Tribes reminds me of Faith no More and vice versa
Morrowind reminds of Lali Puna/Hermann and Kleine

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Vice City ownz this... 'Waiting for a girl like you' - Foreigner. Lotsa bloodshed. It may have been in the disco.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 09:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Kate Bush running up that hill for some reason was on the radio ALL the time when i was trying to finish some text adventure on the spectrum - I think a really cheap one called The Helm
ALL of Mars Audiac Quintet for Starfighter 3000 on my Acorn
In-game music sort of ruins this association don't you think? But that's OK cos I love binky-binky Nintendo in-game music anyway, hurrah.

Hooverphonic's A New Stereophonic Sound Spectactular some racing game I had on N64. I think the game was called XG2 or something, but it really fit. Also, for that Star Wars Pod Racing video game, The Crystal Method's "More" and Apollo Four Forty's "Raw Power".

Ian Beverly (Eastern Mantra), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 11:35 (twenty-two years ago)

This is a topic that's long puzzled me. Only ever happened with NES games for me. A few I can remember:

Nirvana - "Drain You" (Defender of the Crown)
Peter Gabriel - "Big Time" (RC Pro Am)
Genesis - "Tonight, Tonight, Tonight" (The Legend of Zelda)

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 12:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Foreigner's "Jukebox Hero" was playing the first time I beat my college roommate at NBA Jam. I rode the power of that one guitar.

Chris Ott (Chris Ott), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

??

Wasn't that the name of it? I'm not sure how often we even did this, but I have this image stuck in my head of the little PSIQ man running around to "Sui Shop." It's too perfect.

nabisco (nabisco), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Super Mario Kart - The Prodigy Experience, particularly the 'Fire'/'Ruff In The Jungle Bizness' coupling

57 7th (calstars), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

an NES-heavy list indeed.

Hardcore Devo Vol. 1 - Mario Golf (n64)

ben tausig (datageneral), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:11 (twenty-two years ago)

of course it's an NES-heavy list. i don't think that continuous in-game music really come to the fore until the CD-based consoles hit.

Kingfish Disraeli (Kingfish), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I got deep with Panasonic's Ketso box and Jak & Daxter last week.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

on the reverse front, i cant play super smash brothers without thinking of autechre's confield and squarepusher's go plastic. spacehog's first album and the first tony hawk game are indelibly linked in my mind.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

ben tausig (datageneral), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

yea, its impossible to hear "firestarter" without thinking of wipeout xl.

tom cleveland (tom cleveland), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

No NES memories here... Everytime I hear "Strangeways, Here We Come" I am transported back to that marathon 2-day gaming session where I sat in front of my Apple IIe constantly flipping the tape over and over until I finally got Larry laid in "Leisure Suit Larry and the Land of the Lounge Lizards"! Since I don't know how to post pictures, maybe someone should post a picture of Morrissey and Leisure Suit Larry side by side so you all can see what I see when I hear the Smiths.

ianinportland, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

pretty much every CD I bought in the last 5 years reminds me of playing games while listening to it.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Anything by Children of Bodom. Those keyboard solos are straight from a Colecovision.

Yep, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

and half those M83 songs sound like they borrowed the synth melodies from a bunch of 8/16-bit top-down Japanese arcade shooters...

Kingfish Disraeli (Kingfish), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

black sabbath's "planet caravan" was the soundtrack to my entire 7th and 8th grade, so ultima vi, star control ii, various sierra games and shareware crap all soundtracked by that genius song.

in 9th grade = nirvana's "territorial pissings" on repeat while we played john madden's talking football.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Pet Sounds - Crazy Taxi
