I'm going with Immaculate Collection. If possible, it seems slightly less preposterous and doesn't take itself quite so damn seriously.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:02 (twenty-two years ago)

If Immaculate consisted of the originals...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

new.

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:03 (twenty-two years ago)

The Immaculate Collection doesn't have Burning Up on it.
GHV2 doesn't have Bad Girl on it.

Therefore, as attempts to sum up halves of Madonna's career they both fail miserably.

Both still great though, TIC wins because it's possible to come up with pairs of tracks from each, make them FITE and have TIC win 15-0 (the former has two extra songs).

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, some of the mixes on Immaculate are craptastic. GHV2.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:06 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem, anyway, is that she had far too many singles and that the original mixes are too long. The only solution is to divide her career into QUARTERS and cherry-pick the best, i.e. up til 1986, 1986-1990. 1991-1997, 1998-present.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

That's no accident, though. If those albums did have those "missing" tracks, they'd render the rest of her back catalog moot, and no one would buy her first album, etc. It'd been marketing suicide.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:10 (twenty-two years ago)

i think the versions on 'immaculate...' *improve*
(with their fancy 'Q SOUND') on the originals.
especially 'vogue' and 'express yourself'.

piscesboy, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:12 (twenty-two years ago)

1998-present

Totally unnecessary. They should just append the Oakenfold remix of "What it Feels Like For a Girl" to Ray of Light and be done with it.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

The Shep Pettibone remix of "Express Yourself" is a crime against humanity and is Exhibit B as to why Shep will be up against the wall when the revolution comes.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Not exactly true - except for the first album, "Everybody" is nothing more than a historical curiosity really, but True Blue, Like A Virgin and Erotica have a lot of strong non-singles on them.

And it's REALLY easy to get a mostly-full CDR of 1998 to present.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:15 (twenty-two years ago)

GHV2 cherrypicks a bunch of great singles from some not-so-great albums.

immaculate cherrypicks a bunch of great singles from a string of albums that are all absolutely worth owning.

therefore, GHV2 wins.

something to remember is pretty nice, too.

fact checking cuz (fcc), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 15:16 (twenty-two years ago)

how are the versions on the Immaculate collection different than the originals?

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 16:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Shorter, for a start, which is great for something like "Lucky Star" but who'd want to chop a single second from "Live To Tell"? Also, the channel mixing sounds a bit different.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 16:11 (twenty-two years ago)

but Shep's mix of 'Vogue' remains classique

stevem (blueski), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 16:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I choose the Japanese 40-CD Single Collection Box Set, which is the ONLY place where you can get the original single mixes. Plus, it ends rrrrrrriiiiggghhhhttttt when she was starting to get really rappy (Ray of Light). Don't buy it, 'cause it costs a fortune. Download it.

Unknown User, Wednesday, 9 June 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

crappy too!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 16:34 (twenty-two years ago)

the omission of # 1 "who's that girl" was preposterous and criminal

Vic (Vic), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

The 1st album is great, don't test.

Crickets Dance On Tequila Booty (Barima), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 17:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Great Madonna remixes post-98:

Paradise (Spin Funk Punk Remix)
Die Another Day (Felix Da Houscat Thee Lectroretro Remix)

Siegbran (eofor), Wednesday, 9 June 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

one year passes...
fucking hell, i've gone for 15 years of my life w.out knowing that the mixes on 'the immaculate collection' were not the real shit!

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 11:12 (twenty years ago)

GHV2 does at least consist of the original 7 inch versions. But the songs from the first half of the 90s (her weakest period artistically) are dragging the quality down considerably.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 13:26 (twenty years ago)

GHV2 ain't a bad stretch of songs but it really can't compete with the sense of grand narrative at work with The Immaculate Collection - the way the album sweeps through the first four albums to end with the victory lap of "Vogue", "Justify My Love" and (the immensely underrated) "Rescue Me" - that sense of Madonna commanding us at the height of her powers, being able to go anywhere from here... as I recall the next single from Madonna after this wasn't "Erotica" but "This Used To Be My Playground", a fantastically conservative soundtrack ballad to serve as a pallet cleanser before attempting the ostentatious fulfilment of the best-of's hints and gestures (Erotica).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 13:44 (twenty years ago)

Mitya (mitya), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 15:49 (twenty years ago)

i played the 12" of LA ISLA BONITA last night and, much like the 12" of OPEN YOUR HEART before it, it rocked my world.

there should be a really great compilation of all the best remixes/ extended versions and such. YOU CAN DANCE aint it thats fer darn sure.

piscesboy, Tuesday, 17 January 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

That's rather good, Tim. I just published a reappraisal of Erotica which also argues that "Rescue Me" is fantastically underrated.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 15:53 (twenty years ago)

by whom?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:00 (twenty years ago)

by me!

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:01 (twenty years ago)

you argue that you had been wrongly underrating 'rescue me'?

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:03 (twenty years ago)

Oh, haha. I just got the semantical error.

Getting back to the matter at hand, I never hear "Rescue Me" on the radio even though it was a sizable top 10 hit and it's rarely on a short list of her best singles.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:13 (twenty years ago)

i think the 'justify my love' --> 'frozen' period has been stricken from the record, radiowise.

Theorry Henry (Enrique), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:14 (twenty years ago)

I never hear "Deeper and Deeper" on the radio ever and that's like the best song she's ever done that's not named "Into the Groove"!

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 16:32 (twenty years ago)

those songs all get lots of video airplay though

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 17:06 (twenty years ago)

I think "Rescue Me" just gets overshadowed conceptually by "Justify My Love" which was the big statement on The Immaculate Collection. And then, because "Justify My Love" is largely shunned by radio and reminds too many people of the Sex book now, both songs end up being sidelined (only no-one remembers that they're sidelining "Rescue Me").

Heard "Sorry" on the radio yesterday. I kinda like it, but thought (in relation to Geir's comments) "this sounds even less like a 'song' than "Erotica" or "Justify My Love" do." It really is just basic vocal hooks over a dance groove, there's very little effort put into er constructing them into something bigger than that (i.e. if a song needs to be minimally architectural, "Sorry" and "Hung Up" are like a flat foundation, whereas "Erotica" and "Justify My Love" are houses with paper walls).

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 21:18 (twenty years ago)

"Sorry" does at least have a tune. A pretty good one too in my ears. The talking in "Justify My Love" and "Erotica" annoy me while "Rescue Me" is slighty better because big parts of it has a tune.

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Tuesday, 17 January 2006 21:45 (twenty years ago)

First appearance of "Who's That Girl" on a Madonna comp.

On other hand, she should die a thousand deaths for excluding "Angel" and "Causing a Commotion" from her catalogue.

On other hand, she should die a thousand deaths for exincluding "Angel" and "Causing a Commotion" from her catalogue anything from her last two albums.

boring movies are the most boring (Eric H.), Wednesday, 2 September 2009 20:03 (sixteen years ago)

If you hate Confessions on a Dancefloor, you may as well just get off ILM now.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 20:15 (sixteen years ago)

i guess this'll be the best madonna comp of them all if it includes the original versions of her 80s hits

lex pretend, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 20:42 (sixteen years ago)

That's what I'm hoping. I want radio edits/album versions. NOT wonky commissioned remixes.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 20:44 (sixteen years ago)

classic remixes, 12" versions and so on, and oddities like that terrifying beast within version of "justify my love", would've been a great idea for a bonus disc - i'd've been interested, as someone who wasn't around for a good part of her career i don't really have many of them. (as it is i pretty much have all the material here, so bleh to acquiring it.)

lex pretend, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 20:51 (sixteen years ago)

If you hate Confessions on a Dancefloor, you may as well just get off ILM now.

Oops, for some reason I skipped Confessions in my mind. I meant Hard Candy and American Life.

hate it when they don't order these things chronologically

wow "american life" isn't on the cd OR the dvd, damn

no "oh father" either

da croupier, Thursday, 3 September 2009 00:20 (sixteen years ago)

really disappointed at the exclusion of these crappy songs

the immaculate collection 'into the groove' is the best 'into the groove'

it's science
