Edited from the Biography section on Seth Tisue's site (I've also inserted the link to the Katy Vine piece he refers to):
So who is Jandek? No one knows for sure. He doesn’t perform live or give interviews; he has never made any public statement of any kind. The Katy Vine story above is the only documented encounter anyone’s had with the man in person. She must have done some detective work to track him down, but I suspect it was probably not all that hard. Jandek hides himself, but he hasn’t gone to extreme lengths to cover his tracks. After all, his picture is on his album covers.
Katy Vine reports that the man she talked to was the man pictured on the album covers, but he wouldn’t directly admit to having made the music, but the overwhelming impression from various details in the article is that in fact he had.
I personally believe that Jandek is Sterling Smith is the man depicted on the album covers is the man singing is the man playing the guitar.

I really like what Jandek stuff I've heard and, frankly, would like to own it all. Are there any other non-Americans here who have successfully ordered stuff from Corwood? And what's the best/cheapest way to get USD cheques?
― aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 10 June 2004 11:04 (twenty-two years ago)
RFI: Jandek

Does anyone have a clue why these CDs would fetch this kind of price?: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0006ZOUNW/ref=sr_1_3_olp?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1274986115&sr=1-3&condition=used

You see that sort of thing on Amazon all the time.
― I am using your worlds, Thursday, 27 May 2010 19:20 (sixteen years ago)
I got some Jandek merch at his first London gig, to wit a nice small poster with the gig details on it and the Six and Six cover. Officially sanctioned, I would imagine.
― anagram, Thursday, 27 May 2010 19:35 (sixteen years ago)
But. . . What could possibly make that CD worth $200+?!!? No indication its autographed, or includes a little baggie of The Representative's dandruff or ANYthing!
― ImprovSpirit, Thursday, 27 May 2010 21:26 (sixteen years ago)
nothing - it's just, why not list it? maybe some phool somewhere sees it, thinks "rarity!" and sends you 200 clams -> you pocket 190 bucks in profit, order another copy of "Shadow of Leaves" from Corwood
― in which we apologize for sobering up (underrated aerosmith albums I have loved), Thursday, 27 May 2010 21:29 (sixteen years ago)
both of those CDs are $7 from Forced Exp, that is just blatant Amazon trolling xp
― bug holocaust (sleeve), Thursday, 27 May 2010 21:42 (sixteen years ago)
Well yeah - Some people do have more money than sense. You can also get them for $4 on the Corwood 20-disc deal, I think. I guess I just don't understand people sometime...

Fwiw, those high-dollar CDs are new and sealed (as opposed to the used copies trading as sub-$10 prices).
For the discerning Jandek collector, I guess.
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 28 May 2010 13:20 (sixteen years ago)
But you can still buy them new and sealed from Corwood.
― anagram, Friday, 28 May 2010 13:25 (sixteen years ago)
Oh. Well then. Perhaps it's for the *un*discerning Jandek collector, who is for some reason ignorant of the Corwood site?
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 28 May 2010 13:30 (sixteen years ago)
The original lp's go for those kinds of prices.
― Trip Maker, Friday, 28 May 2010 13:32 (sixteen years ago)
Corwood isn't a "site" but apart from that OTM.

ilxor FAIL
― I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 28 May 2010 13:52 (sixteen years ago)
I've never actually bought from Corwood, actually. Seems the Jandek stuff shows up at a perfect rate in the local shops (about 1 CD every month or so) to pick up his stuff as I find it. If I ordered 20+ CDs from Corwood I doubt I'd give them each the individual attention I try to give everything I acquire.

If your local shop is stocking Jandek CDs then that is (a) a cause for rejoicing and (b) a very good reason to carry on doing what you're doing. Independent record shops probably need your financial support more than Jandek does.

xxpost I did some random checking and that merchant any_b00k consistently has the highest price in all it's listings. they're selling new in-print Huey Lewis & the News - Sports CD for $31.35.
on the other hand, my hunch is that Amazon or those merchants use some algorithm to automatically adjust price based on an item's availability, other prices, # of other sellers, etc. I've seen out-of-print DVDs jump from like $5 to $50 in a day when someone becomes the only person selling it, then back down to earth when a 2nd merchant lists it at a normal price.
― rap-metal-alternative (herb albert), Friday, 28 May 2010 14:17 (sixteen years ago)
Very interesting. That is a very complex system that causes some really bizarre & unnecessary price fluxuations.
Not only are the discs readily available brand spanking new from several retail outlets & from Corwood, many of the discs that are less than $5 on Amazon are sealed.
Sometimes capitalism is kinda messed up.
