He's great, but 'On Again On Again' is a remarkably sexist song. 'She could bore the balls off a buffalo' etc.

Classic opening lines, though:

I love a good bum on a woman, it makes my day
It's positive proof of God's existence a posteriori

(Jake goes on to say 'It's the tongue I can't stand'...)

Anyway, the answer to your question is 'no'.

That album also has 'i stayed off work today' - it took me forever to realise how completely affecting that was. nice as a companion to 'on again' as well, old jake's subject to his old girl - "they can do me, do me darling, do me darling as they choose / but since you took my eyes i do not do as others do"

i was in the pub the other day with some guy who just went on and on. every single thing anyone'd say he half listened but never responded, just used it to propel some opinion with a sheen of originality. it was tiresome, i can tell you!

"give some women a ghost oif a chance..."

It's certainly rather sexist, but the lyrics are, as indicated above, very dexterously written; and as always his accented delivery is fantastic. And it's a perfectly jocular tune, with that winsome guitar playing; which all makes me slightly conflicted. Though such lines are the following at least suggest a self-awareness:

'Please understand I respect and admire the frailer sex,
And I honour them every bit as much as the next... misogynist [...]'

Matthew, if it's any use I've the compilation La-di-da which features 'on again, on again'.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i have that same compilation, but i found one user with the full original album. never downloaded until yesterday, got halfway then all my list disappeared. galling!

it's an uncomfortable song but we have a base and uncomfortable truth that there are some traits common to many women, which while not exclusively or universally held by women are largely associated with women for just reasons, and the same is true of men. and spaniards, or any group of people. as such it's worth writing any song on such topics.
