hey folks,

if you wetted your appetite last night for !!! at their boat party on the East River - come see John Pugh & Gorman's new other band FREE BLOOD play for two bucks in an awesome little space in LIC - THE CAVE. Free Blood is John & Gorman & their friend doing m/f vocals over bass and beats and fucked up old keyboard sounds - in white fur coats.

This Friday night 6/11, all night party at a new space called THE
CAVE - in LIC, Queens. TWO CHEAP DOLLARS @ THE DOOR!

Free Blood & Japanther & Zeke Healy from the Boggs & Sleepy Doug Shaw
& Puttin' On The Ritz will play. WATANABE DEATH DJ CREW djs Ropstyle
& Forestlove'll spin all night before between & after till late late
late. We're bringing in a super bass-y soundsystem so stick around &
dance. STIFF DRINKS, PATIO, AWESOMENESS, CRAVEN DECADENCE,

the Cave is this new space in LIC, right over the bridge from
Brooklyn. it's in an ancient building's basement (like 1860's style),
with these rad old schist rock walls, and has this patio back yard
with trees that looks out onto an abandoned rail revine from the
original LIRR Montauk line. it's pretty awesome & cozy & drinks are
really stiff there.

love, Todd P - toddp@t...

[ X27 ]
"X27 is currently a three-piece headed by the dynamic duo of Chicago
legends Rikkeh Suhtn on Electric Guitar and Boy Voice and Carmen X on
Bass and Girl Voice. In the mid-nineties Rikkeh led the Chicago No-
Wave pioneers Duotron into explorations of microtonal and
polyrhythmic pop music that blurred idiot with brilliance. In X27,
Rikkeh re-creates the prehistoric haunted swamp feel of his childhood
homeland in Mississippi with catchy pop hooks. Carmen's twisted
vocals and Sub-sonic tidal waves on bass drown the screams of
childhood ghosts and rips a gash in the human psyche. Instinct takes
over, time is obsolete...past present and future become one. Current
drummer is simply known as Drummer X. X (Oran Cannfield of seminal,
experimental band Caroliner, and avant- metal band Dig That Body Up
It's Alive) pounds with more ferocity than a wooly mammoth running
across cracking continents. Together, the three members of X27 spew
caveman mojo with screeching sound-these orgasmic blasts ripping thru
metallic skies boasting futuristic electric fear. X27 put their
listeners in a primordial genius state of mind where they're reduced
to single cell ooze, dividing and splitting and dividing again with
each splintering note. X27's brutal assault weeds out the weak and
only the strongest survive. Fans will crawl away from the speakers
battered, bruised and naked but more alive than ever before." -

[ BREAKER! BREAKER! ]
"The dirgy disco beat continues coursing through new indie circuitry
like a spit-slicked finger jamming on a cracked electric socket. Case
in point: Breaker! Breaker!, a lo-fi art punk band pairing vocals
that crackle with forceful dance commanders and riot girl cheers,
adding tinny synths that appear to be a couple clicks away from
shooting sparks and guitars that churn on a spin cycle of effects.
The Brooklyn band's debut on Velocidrecords sounds like it was
recorded in stark basement warmed only by the body heat drummed up in
the songs--so what B!B! lack in a more complicated, textured sound
they make up for with an organic, excitable energy that paints the
trio to be heroes of the DIY dancefloor. And sometimes that's all you
need to get the party started." - Portland Mercury. full length out

[ DIRTY PROJECTORS ]
Dirty Projectors is Mr. Dave Longstreth, 20, of New Haven,
Connecticut - one time pop crooner now crooning over computerised
experimental beats and sampled found sounds. The resulting
trnsformation is familiar while all the while more textured and
interesting than the straight on pop Dave used to produce. It's still
chilling though, just more restrained and more mature, and way more
out there. "Dwelling within the emotional ambiguities and
contradictions that have always tortured the sensitive ones, the
Dirty Projectors offer songs bursting with melodies that seem to have
been sent from some beautiful and erratic netherworld. The songs
surprise and deceive, constantly defying our expectations of
emotional and musical resolution." - Western Vinyl. Dave has five
full lengthy albums on as many labels. "This is scary, evocative
music, like an Alan Lomax field recording of a dusty, punk troubadour
from the imaginary past; Kid A covered under 80 years of dust and
gloom, only exchange the robots and clones for forests and abandoned
farmhouses. Dave Longstreth is making his own fucked-up version of
American music." - Dusted Magazine

[ THANKSGIVING ]
Portland, OR's Adrian Orange has been playing shows since he was 10
years old, writing songs since before that, but do not take him for
another Connor Oberst or Ben Lee or even a Dave Longstreth. With an
almost possessed intensity, Adrian writes and sings songs with a
healthy touch of morbidity and overwhelming passion, pared down to
just downward strums on bar chords - stretched together by haunting
lyrics that belie more meaning than his unpretentious delivery could
lead you to believe. be not afraid - there's no emo here though,
these are anthems. For comparison's sake, think a solo Young People,
or an un-cynical Kurt Cobain, or an un-self-indulgent Will Oldham
with restraint - who can sing. Completely uncliched intensity and
sincerity that you will stand in awe over rather than wanting to roll
your eyes, Adrian Orange is a rare singer and songwriter who
effortlessly and uniquely sings and writes songs that sound nothing
like a singer-songwriter. Full length on Phil Elverum's new label
forthcoming.

I wetted my appetite and my bed.

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:13 (twenty-two years ago)

don't you mean "whetted?"

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

do I? wetted is better imagery - methinks.

hey there Joel!

todd p, Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:21 (twenty-two years ago)

actually... dude from caroliner just got kicked out of the band.

oran's got a new band though, they're playing two shows for me at the end of the month - called: Child Abuse

the drummer from the Amverts'll be drumming @ this one, I'm told.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 June 2004 15:59 (twenty-two years ago)

also it's after my friend Suz EQ's show (at 8) with guest david cross. thnx

holy shit, gang's all here! now we don't need nyhappenings anymore!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:11 (twenty-two years ago)

DUDE DON'T LET AQUI POST TO ILM.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY FREE BLOOD PICTURES?!?!?!?!

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

(Stencil was that an intentional joke-ruining?)

nabisco (nabisco), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

(nabisco - that was a joke?)

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

(please sure up for me right away, k'thanks)

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:28 (twenty-two years ago)

ewwwww aqui.

ddb (ddb), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I have free blood pictures. I'll have more after tomorrow.

I can send them over tonight if you want.

Todd

todd p, Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I was kidding. I don't want pictures of them. Please don't send me pictures of them. I'm already having nightmares about Gorman wearing a wool hat smashing glasses with his bass and stepping on the power strip and yelling to hear more music through the DJ P.A. which is impossible.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:14 (twenty-two years ago)

'scuse me, not accustomed to that ILM brand of "humor" yet.

and here I was thinking you were going to provide some kind of heretofor undisclosed promotional help with said pictures. I was all ready to scramble for them and shit. darn.

Todd

todd p, Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:19 (twenty-two years ago)

selzer is just impossible

duke portent, Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude Japanther plays every single one of our WBAR events, I'm pretty sure they got no pride or something.

Allyzay, Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

if you heard their music, that would confirm it for ya.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

they're proud as all get out.

that said, they would 'draw' millions if they went three months or so without playing.

not a likely possibility. fine by me, I get sick of mid level new york fools "managing" their careers. makes it damn hard to book shows when every jackass who brings anyone out is "taking the summer off to write new songs."

nyc bands with managers now = bands that will be in some cut-out bin at sam goody in two years' time.

todd p, Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

dude todd lauren should punch you.

(kidding. ILM "humor")

tattoos of cassette tapes on your arm are gay.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

todd, i was riffing on the constant requests for Aqui pictures, which I honestly thought were fake, i.e. a pal of theres or Mojo trying to drum up excitement. Someone was posting to ElectroDiscoPunks and nyhappenings constantly, I moderated most of the posts.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Aqui - yeah saw those on the haps list, thought: Mojo at work. Must be a slow afternoon in the Trash basement.

todd p, Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:34 (twenty-two years ago)

dude hstencil do not be fronting on my man NA.

anyway I've heard Japanther now! I didn't mind them at all. They were much better than that Devandra Barnhardt or whatever the fuck that dude's name is. I hated him. He made me drink a lot a lot of Budweiser, dude.

Allyzay, Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, tomorrow Free Blood gets to play through their own PA. gorman can yell at John for more bass.

todd p, Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

what does NA have to do with sellout New York bands?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

You know.

Allyzay, Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, I was referring to the Japanther dude.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

hey todd, you mind if we list the !!! afterparty on fp?

Yanc3y (ystrickler), Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Dude seriously I just wanted to bring up NA, randomly.

I'd love to go to this actually but I have to go to a funeral early Saturday morning. That sounds like a made up excuse but it isn't, somehow.

Allyzay, Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to check with john & justin & tyler about it. I got an email from Jocelyn about it and I'm down, but those fellas are a little difficult to pin down. I'll get an answer to y'all tonight.

todd p, Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

awww sorry about that, Ally. Funerals suck.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I have nothing against aqui and appreciate mojo's contributions...but I keep him moderated, believe it or not.

You're next, big guy.

Just kidding, but you may want to keep the posts a bit shorter. It's important to me to keep the digests to the point, maybe instead of giving so much space to tentative shows 2 months away, you can group them together like you used to: upcoming shows include: and give the toddpnyc link?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

damn - regulated by the selzer - and in public no less. I'll see what I can do Dan.

todd p, Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

understood, todd. thanks!

go to Northsix, Mercury Lounge will sell out. Plus you can harass Phil Manley in-between bands!

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Phil Manley's a super-nice guy.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:09 (twenty-two years ago)

no shit! He will take the harassment lightly.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:15 (twenty-two years ago)

my Phil Manley story:

when the Silver Apples bootleg CD originally came out, I bought it at Kim's Underground, back when it was run by the guys from Other Music, I guess? And brought it back to school, where I played it for all. Then Phil went off to Chicago to record with John McEntire and when he came back he told me they were smoking pot or something and Phil said "play me some really crazy shit" and John pulled out the Silver Apples record. Phil told me this I assume to let me know how cool I was. This was back when John McEntire was something like a god. At least to me.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:24 (twenty-two years ago)

dan you like the show?

duke deep, Friday, 11 June 2004 06:30 (twenty-two years ago)

John McEntire is still a god to me, you fucks.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:36 (twenty-two years ago)

what I heard...I was in the other room cleaning for parts. I liked the Police. No really, I did, I feel stupid about not calling during this one song, who dj'd with you and Dave? I think he played it, maybe it was you? It was like this low-fi techno-pop song. I swore to myself I was gonna remember what was playing before or after so I could ask, but I forgot. It was really simple, drum machine, a synth line or two, and some guy singing.

Do you tape the show?

Good deal, hstencil. I haven't heard Tortoise since the second LP, but when that second LP was about to come out, as well as the Stereolab stuff he produced, my mind was blown. DJ'd and the 12" on duophonic rock my world, as does that 7", with the beige cover, you know the one.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:40 (twenty-two years ago)

TNT rules, haters are gay and/or Jess.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:41 (twenty-two years ago)

you'll have to, um, tape it for me or something.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:48 (twenty-two years ago)

do you still need that Dadamah CD?

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 11 June 2004 06:52 (twenty-two years ago)

ABSOLUTELY! Someone taped it for me a few years ago in an "internet trade" of sorts. I have many things I can burn for you...really cool things. Let's do it. Let's make it happen. Dadaman totally does it for me. Let's listen to Dadamah and Tortoise and pretend like it's 1995 again. I was happy in 1995, for like a month.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 11 June 2004 07:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Dadaman is a new superhero, by the way.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 11 June 2004 07:01 (twenty-two years ago)

two years pass...
Does anyone have a contact for Free blood? I sent a message through their myspace, but that they seem to be AOL AWOL or something.

one year passes...

So I quite liked the hot chip remix, now listening to "the royal family" on myspace, which is pretty great, especially with the strings and the skronk after the 2 min mark.

the influences list is too ilm-friendly for words (devin the dude, stevie nicks, rong music, pan sonic and the muppet show), but the music doesn't actually come off as overstuffed or overreaching.

I just want to note that when this thread was originally active, I had it open in my taskbar at work, and my old boss came by to look at something else on my screen and was like "free blood???," as if he seriously thought I might be some sort of nutso Goth who was sourcing blood on the internet at work.
