Hey Joni

"Hyperstation"

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I was going to say Hey Joni.

dave225 (Dave225), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I want to get it on vinyl after all these years so I can beatmatch "Eliminator Jr." with a Surgeon track.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It's "Total Trash", duh.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:28 (twenty-two years ago)

"Candle"

"Teenage Riot" comes close, but I have a stronger sentimental attachment to "Candle."

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Matthew Perpetua, do you buy greatest hits albums?

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually pretty much agree with Matthew here. "Candle" is the shiznit. Great video too (although the "Teenage Riot" one rules as well).

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:31 (twenty-two years ago)

(tie) cross the breeze/total trash

but mostly for the longgggggggggggggggg instrumental parts

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

LAST TIME I SAW SY THERE WERE PEOPLE SHOUTING FOR "TEENAGE RIOT"

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Yep, "Total Trash". Last time I listened to the album - about, oh 8 or 9 months ago now - that was the track that really leaped out and blew my mind all over again. The way it falls apart in the middle and snaps back together is awe-inspiring.

Sentimental favorite is "The Sprawl" for that long, chiming guitar coda. That was the track that caused me to fall in love with them back when I was a high school pothead.

"Hey Joni" is a good choice too, tho. They're all good choices.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't think of a single song I don't like on this album.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

providence / candle

6335, Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:36 (twenty-two years ago)

yes and "the sprawl" too... me and broheems are hearing partners.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:38 (twenty-two years ago)

the sprawl

pattern recognition on nurse continues SY's habit of ripping off william gibson.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:41 (twenty-two years ago)

William Gibson is a musician?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:42 (twenty-two years ago)

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:43 (twenty-two years ago)

One love, gygax!

Yeah - "Cross the Breeze" too. Between that and "The Sprawl" you've got a good 15 minutes of zone-in bliss and dancing harmonics. They're really untouchable when they sculpt the sound like that, rather than just rearing back and letting rip a la Silver Session, etc. (which I enjoy, too! but not as much)

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:44 (twenty-two years ago)

You can call me Mr. Obvious.

Teenage Riot.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:46 (twenty-two years ago)

"Are you for sale? Does 'fuck you' sound simple enough?" = my favorite Daydream Nation moment.

otto, Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Matthew Perpetua, do you buy greatest hits albums?

In general terms, I prefer singles/individual songs to albums, so kinda, yeah. I'm hardly a casual Sonic Youth fan, though, if that's what you're getting at. "Candle" is tied with "Cotton Crown" as being my favorite Sonic Youth song ever. I think it's one of the best guitar songs EVER.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:51 (twenty-two years ago)

LAST TIME I SAW SY THERE WERE PEOPLE SHOUTING FOR "TEENAGE RIOT"

That's because it's their most popular song, along with "Kool Thing" and "100%." What's so shocking?

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Sonic Youth fans be wankers. Teenage Riot is the song that would most obviously NOT PLAY.

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:53 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/cc/02stats.html

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"Cross the Breeze"

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

"100%" sucks way worse than "Teenage Riot" (which I like a lot).

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll go with "Candle" too.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 10 June 2004 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

100% is a great song. So is Teenage Riot.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate 100% because it's both bad on its own and because it makes Rollins unhappy.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

That's just the stats for 2002 - they played "Teenage Riot" frequently in 2003, as well as regularly on the tours for NYC Ghosts & Flowers, Washing Machine, and Goo.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

"100%" sucks total donkey balls and is hardly a song. Still somehow less slapdash than "Youth Against Fascism" though, yeeeeeck.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know that I've ever seen them play "Teenage Riot", and I've probably seen them more than any other band (not necessarily cuz they're my *favorite band* or anything - though they come close; it's just worked out that way.) Haven't seen 'em live since Washing Machine, though.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:03 (twenty-two years ago)

If I were picking my two least favorite '90s SY albums (which, of course, no one asked me to do), I'd have to say Dirty and NYCG&F.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I can't remember if they played it in Chicago on the Murray Street tour or not. Shoulda been there, Broheems. Esp. in the balcony for the Chicago improv community's running commentary.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"100%" is great! The dynamics are kinda obvious, but it's a very effective song. The "I've been around the world a million times and all you men are slime" and "all I know is you got no money but that's got nothing to do with a good time" are very memorable. It's a good pop song in spite of itself.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

it's hardly a pop song. Or a song. Couple slap-dash versus with easy noise breaks. Yuck city.

The b-side "Genetic" rocks fuckin' hard tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Here's the setlist I swiped from the Goo tour in '91!

http://users.rcn.com/rschrade/goosetlist.jpg

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Eric's trip!!!

I hate 100% because it's both bad on its own and because it makes Rollins unhappy.
-- Johnny Fever (wkr...), June 10th, 2004.

What'd he say?

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

(sorry, I'm a nerd)

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a Dirty tour setlist still hanging in my old room at my parents' place. They only played like 3 old songs that night (tho one of them was "Burning Spear").

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:08 (twenty-two years ago)

hah! I was really let down the first time I heard Dirty and I don't think my opinion has changed much. I liked the instrumental parts of "Theresa's Sound World". "Mote" was too long... "Genetic" is probably the most poppy thing they've ever done.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Dirty certainly isn't as bad as the haters made it out to be. That said, I'm glad that it was the Sonic Youth CD I lost and not any of the others.

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:10 (twenty-two years ago)

That's a pretty great setlist. I've seen them a whole bunch of times, but have never seen them do "Mote," "Silver Rocket," or "Stereo Sanctity," so I'm envious.

I'm not a huge Dirty fan, but I like it well enough. There's nothing on it that I dislike. I just prefer them in other periods.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

well 100% is about Hank's pal Joe Cole getting shot, so I'd imagine that's what would make him unhappy about it.

I'm partially bringing this one up because it hasn't been mentioned yet, but "Kissability" fucking rules.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

i still don't like dirty all that much and dont' understand why this, of all the records, got the double disc remaster treatment. I like JC though.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

well 100% is about Hank's pal Joe Cole getting shot, so I'd imagine that's what would make him unhappy about it.

Yeah, that's what I was gonna say.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

what you FULEZ are ignoring is that the quality of that setlist is because it was prior to them releasing most of that 90s crap.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

joe was a friend of SY's as well, he's all over the year punk broke movie.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

including his footage from some euro-moshpit which makes some of the most challenging film-viewing i've experienced.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 June 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Doobie Keebler, the live version of silver rocket from the Screaming Field video thing rulessss

HAMBURGER NEURON GROUP (ex machina), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

who here's seen "Put the Blood in the Music"?

Changed my life.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Daydream Nation is the first recording I've bought all 3 formats. Today its Silver Rocket, tomorrow it will be something different.

brg30 (brg30), Thursday, 10 June 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's safe to say Jim likes to rock

I don't know, maybe as a bassist, but I think the jury's still out in terms of his producing. I don't think he's very good at recording drums, for one thing.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Dirty made me re-evaluate Kim's role in the band, and I don't mean this in a good way. Her songs on that album are unlistenable.

C'mon, "JC" is pretty awesome.

if any of you own (or owned) the vinyl, I've always wondered: Is "Kissability" the last song on Side Three, or the first on Side Four?

First song on side four (and "Hyperstation" and "Elimantor Jr" have individual bands showing where they start, so it looks like there's four individual songs on side 4, not two).

Vic Funk, Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

the best part about my copy of daydream nation is that eliminator jr skips, simulating a locked groove and making it NEVER END.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Thursday, 10 June 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Ian you are Thomas Brinkmann.

I don't think he's very good at recording drums, for one thing.

well when he was recording stuff in his apartment, he couldn't do drum stuff, so maybe that has something to do with it? Dunno, but he's a producer and not really an engineer anyway.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, he often gets credit for "mixing" too.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

And as producer, he should have a say in how stuff gets recorded anyway.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:38 (twenty-two years ago)

dude just admit to backlash, okay?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:41 (twenty-two years ago)

if you think jim o'rourke can't record drums you have probably never heard:

Melt Banana - Scratch Or Stitch
stormandstress - under thunder and fluorescent lights
even Yankee Hotel Foxtrot has fantastic sounding drums, probably the best drumming on any alternative rock record last year!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:56 (twenty-two years ago)

pedantry alert: Albini was the engineer on Scratch or Stitch.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 10 June 2004 20:57 (twenty-two years ago)

OK- I'm not sure that O'Rourke should get the blame for this, as it may have been an executive decision by other members of SY, but I did sort of feel that the sound on Murray Street could have been a bit more, shall we say, red-blooded - and that's not a criticism I would make of Dirty, whatever other faults it may have. I'll have to go back and listen to the drums on YHF.

o. nate (onate), Thursday, 10 June 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

pedantry alert: Albini was the engineer on Scratch or Stitch.

pedantry alert x2: so was Jim O'Rourke

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 10 June 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"Total Trash"

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:03 (twenty years ago)

ACtually, make that "Cross the Breeze"

The Brainwasher (Twilight), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:17 (twenty years ago)

"Candle."

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

no, you were right the first time, the brainwasher.
"total trash" is king.

andrew m. (andrewmorgan), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Teenage Riot

But the whole album is genius. Except maybe Rain King.

kornrulez6969 (TCBeing), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:33 (twenty years ago)

"The Sprawl"

latebloomer: lazy r people (latebloomer), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:48 (twenty years ago)

it amazes me how many times "Total Trash" came up in this thread. by far my least favorite song on the album, really the only one I don't like. "Kissability" is still my pick.

Al (sitcom), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:51 (twenty years ago)

Mine too.

Alba (Alba), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 21:54 (twenty years ago)

I was just joking with a friend last night how my favorite songs on this are Hey Joni/Eric's Trip/Rain King as they're pretty much the same (but awesome!) song.

Cunga (Cunga), Wednesday, 20 July 2005 22:23 (twenty years ago)

well, my email address should probably give you a decent idea of my favorite, although these days it's definitely tied w/"Eric's Trip" for the #1 spot. I always thought the guitars sounded like digeridoos on that song and was very disappointed when I figured out it was just a wah pedal.

Zack Richardson (teenagequiet), Thursday, 21 July 2005 02:13 (twenty years ago)

I was just joking with a friend last night how my favorite songs on this are Hey Joni/Eric's Trip/Rain King as they're pretty much the same (but awesome!) song.

your friend likes that Lee Ranaldo some! (as do I)

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 21 July 2005 02:56 (twenty years ago)

Teenage Riot just ridiculously towers over not only every other song on the album, but every other Sonic Youth song I've heard. I still can't believe it wasn't a hit. Was it a single? It should've been a single.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 21 July 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

If more Sonic Youth songs sounded like "Teenage Riot" I'd like them a whole lot more.

Mr. Snrub (Mr. Snrub), Thursday, 21 July 2005 03:09 (twenty years ago)

Hey Joni

mzui (mzui), Thursday, 21 July 2005 08:02 (twenty years ago)

I'd go with "Teenage Riot," though "Hey Joni" is a close second.

Lyra Jane (Lyra Jane), Thursday, 21 July 2005 13:02 (twenty years ago)

I might be persuaded to switch to "Hey Joni" if I ever find a karaoke bar that has it and can yell "kick it!" like Blount.

Al (sitcom), Thursday, 21 July 2005 13:12 (twenty years ago)

daydream nation is POO let alone daydream nation: POO. kissability only thing close to passable on whole lp it sounds like rush's """HEMISPHERES" with its balls cut off

bob snoom, Thursday, 21 July 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

Hemispheres is way more math rock (and maybe more drone in that middle section although there's something to be said for "Providence").

"Candle" for its symphonic ambitions; "Cross the Breeze" for making hardcore epic and hazy without losing the beat. "Trilogy" and "The Sprawl" are classic too though.

Sundar (sundar), Friday, 22 July 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

eleven months pass...
Curious what they're gonna put on the triple CD reissue this fall...

Fastnbulbous (Fastnbulbous), Sunday, 2 July 2006 05:31 (nineteen years ago)

Can't pick a favorite. Love "Total Trash", "Rain King", "Hyperstation", "Eric's Trip", "Eliminator Jr.", "Teenage Riot", "Candle". Etc. Pretty much in that order, but you know, it depends...

Love "Dirty", too. Of the Sonic Youth albums that rule (everthing from "Evol" through "Washing Machine", with the exception of most of "Experimental Jet Set"), it perhaps rules the least. But rules is rules, and that's enuf.

"Rather Ripped", by the way, does not rule. At all.

fuckfuckingfuckedfucker (fuckfuckingfuckedfucker), Monday, 3 July 2006 12:25 (nineteen years ago)

"Eric's Trip"

Stephen Bush (Stephen B.), Monday, 3 July 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

Still "Candle."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn (Alfred Soto), Monday, 3 July 2006 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

Probably "The Sprawl".

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Monday, 3 July 2006 22:09 (nineteen years ago)

Providence. Or The Sprawl.

The Boy Who Cried YSI? (Freud Junior), Monday, 3 July 2006 23:29 (nineteen years ago)

'cross the breeze.
i thought everyone will chose it, but i think im the 1st.

emekars (emekars), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 06:25 (nineteen years ago)

"Kissability" I Love you, Kimmy!!!

nicky lo-fi (nicky lo-fi), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 07:21 (nineteen years ago)

"Cross The Breeze" is my second favourite emekars! I think this is Kim's best album maybe. Or maybe that's Washing Machine.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 10:37 (nineteen years ago)

"Candle"

Matthew Perpetua! (Matthew Perpetua!), Tuesday, 4 July 2006 12:15 (nineteen years ago)
