Whatever is passing for "Live in Santa Monica" these days. It's a great recording of a radio broadcast of a Spiders show. The mix is good and Ronson does equal time with Bowie; in fact, there are great moments when the guitar player really makes the show.

ive always wanted to know if the david live one is as bad as its made out to be.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Monday, 14 June 2004 17:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Me too, as it's from the time that Alan Yentob documentary on Bowie was from and features the same stuff. It hasn't been available for ages has it?

Keith Watson (kmw), Monday, 14 June 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

George OTM. It's well worth it.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 June 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I really want someone to burn me a copy of Stage.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Monday, 14 June 2004 18:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Stage has an incredible "Hang Onto Yourself". I actually like the version of "TVC15" a little better, actually. Other than that, it's...ok. I have one disc of David Live (don't ask), and even though I've never really spent a ton of time with it, I kind of enjoy it — him doing the Ziggy material in plastic soul renditions. Interesting...

The versions on Stage of "Station to Station" and "Breaking Glass" are brill.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 June 2004 18:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Duh, yes, those, too...

David Bowie's roundly maligned, nazi cocainey live album, STAGE: Classic or Dud?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Or "David Bowie Live in the Death Star" as it's otherwise known.

Keith Watson (kmw), Monday, 14 June 2004 19:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The BBC show from 2000 during the "...hours" tour is incredible. It has a great selection of songs and the playing is top notch. The version of "Stay" is excellent.

ive always wanted to know if the david live one is as bad as its made out to be.

It's an aggressively mediocre record. At the time it was issued, many were familiar with the Santa Monica concert as it had been broadcast nationwide. I recall hearing it in Reading, PA, and "Live" just didn't even come close. There simply was no drama or impact in the recording.

George Smith, Monday, 14 June 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

apparently the diamond dogs tour was quite good until bowie discovered philly soul and decided to change tack. i need to hear an early show from that tour to verify this though.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Monday, 14 June 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

btw, best one ive heard so far is the ziggy live album. amazing.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I've got a video of him on some German program in 1978. It's great. It's got Adrian Belew on it and he plays Sense of Doubt, Beauty and the Beast, Heroes, Stay, Jean Genie. TVC15, Alabama Song and Rebel Rebel.

Keith Watson (kmw), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

The 'Serious Moonlight' 1983 tour, and Live in Santa Monica '74. Both are bootlegs though, so I guess they don't count.

Sasha (sgh), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

'The Thin White Duke' bootleg of the Station To Station tour is wonderful apart from the bit with Cher tacked on the end. I only have it on tape and really must track down a cdr copy...

The 1980 Floor Show cleaned up;

David Bowie's '1980 Floor Show' was filmed for US TV at London's Marquee in 1973. High-quality recordings of nine songs have recently surfaced on YouTube and are all in this playlist https://t.co/Rwi5WoP1SH.
