I've never posted on ILM before, but I heard that the Pixies have released a new song called "Bam Thwok".

Written by Kim Deal, it's soon to be available for download on iTunes Music Store. First new material since "Trompe le Monde".

Has anyone here heard it, and if so is it any good? I'm having real problems getting hold of it. Bah!

this doesn't bode well.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

hopefully this song is constructed entirely of Jack Kirby sound effects.

THWAAANGGORR!

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 June 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

KROKKK!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds Thai!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:24 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds like "Bangkok" said with a mouth full of cereal!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Thai cereal?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

is this a song about / originally written for fozzie the bear?

frankE (frankE), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

KREEEGAAAH!!

Jay Vee (Manon_70), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know, my faith in good-band-reunions is high after Mission of Burma. I look forward to hearing this. Hopefully one of the beautiful MP3 bloggers will post it.

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:32 (twenty-two years ago)

already on slsk.

frankE (frankE), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds decent, might be a grower, much more Kim much less Frank. a good thing, obviously.

jed_ (jed), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:34 (twenty-two years ago)

This track is a Kim Deal song rejected for the Shrek 2 soundtrack.
Honest.

GALKIN, Monday, 14 June 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, shut up.

Shakey Mo ColIier, Monday, 14 June 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

100% true. My brother is documenting (filming) their entire reunion tour and hangs with them all day. I asked him.

GALKIN (GALKIN), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

GOD, YOU ARE SUCH A NAME-DROPPER!

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 June 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

um, why is someone bothering to post as me?

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 14 June 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I am not trying to drop names, I swear! It is a fact, though. It is actually the Pixies, not Kim Deal, but it is a rejected track. Might have scared the kids...

GALKIN (GALKIN), Monday, 14 June 2004 20:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey people, I can't run neither iTunes nor Soulseek in my computer, is there any other place from where one can download the track?

Hey, don't be mean... I just have a bad internet provider!

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Monday, 14 June 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

As the Pixies are not currently affiliated with a record label, they had the luxury of making their first new song available to fans around the globe at a low price and instantaneously, something that iTunes could easily provide.

The Pixies plan to perform "Bam Thwok" at concerts on their current European and upcoming North American tour dates.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, I really like "Bam Thwok." It sounds more like a Kim thing than a Pixies song (whereas, say, "London Song" sounds more like the Pixies than a Breeders song, if you get me), but it's fun and catchy.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It's actually pretty good! very fun!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Any chance it'll turn up as a Fluxblog post, Matthew, for those of us without iTunes?

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not going to post the song, because it's a big deal news thing. I'd rather avoid any potential trouble, since it's a web-only song to begin with. One of the other mp3 blogs will probably jump on it.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I got my copy off of slsk. There's a lot of 320 copies being shared - it's pretty easy to come by.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

I got my copy off of slsk. There's a lot of 320 copies being shared - it's pretty easy to come by. My computer isn't iTunes compatable. I wouldn't just paid the $1 charge otherwise.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 14 June 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

In English this time: I would have paid the $1 iTunes charge if I could. But I don't have the option.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Monday, 14 June 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm with you on the no iTunes front. I would happily pay a buck for it! Anyway, I totally understand not posting it. Don't risk anything that could end with F1uxb10g going away...

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i'm glad it's a kim song not a frank black song.

the surface noise and the analogue warmth (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, we're talking about the Pixies, so it would be "Black Francis," not "Frank Black."

somebody pretending to be Matthew Perpetua, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Is he going by "Black Francis" right now? That just seems silly.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah...heard the song a little bit ago. I like it quite a bit more than I thought I would.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 02:11 (twenty-two years ago)

the surface noise and the analogue warmth (electricsound), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 02:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Paul, I was being specific. Maybe your old blog lacked exactly that type of insight and specificity to keep it going. Besides, I think I know a little bit more about the Pixies than the average ILM poster.

somebody pretending to be Matthew Perpetua for some unfathomable reason, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 02:34 (twenty-two years ago)

None of the interviews since the tour started have referred to him as Black Francis.

But then again, there have been NO interviews since the tour started. The Pixies ain't givin' interviews. To anybody.

the Yahoo yahoo, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 03:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh right, Rog. Sorry I pooped on your party by killing my blog.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

They gave an interview at Coachella.

The Downer, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 03:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh yeah, I forgot about that press conference at Coachella. That's true.

Outside of a few pre-tour things, they haven't given any other interviews. When NME put them on the cover a few weeks back, the accompanying article was the usual history of the band stuff, full of old quotes. I guess when all your shows sell out in six minutes you don't need to spend much energy on promotion.

the Yahoo yahoo, Tuesday, 15 June 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

This doesn't sound very Pixies-ish or Breeders-like to me. Very 'eh' overall. There's no hook, like the best Amps/Breeders songs and Kim's vocals are too muddy.

Reminds me of a GbV track, maybe.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

no hook ? yr silly.

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 04:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I still haven't heard this damn song. Being a UK resident, I can't get it from iTunes Music Store (although I've played that 30-second sample to death) and all other searches have proved elusive. This is all very frustrating. :-(

Tom B (Tom B), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 09:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Just got mine from Soulseek at work. Can't wait to get home... no speakers here! :(

JP Almeida (JP Almeida), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 09:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Success! It seems the iTunes Music Store is now available for the UK. Just downloaded it. The jury's still out though. Agree with miloauckerman - sounds a lot like the Breeders/Amps.

Tom B (Tom B), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 10:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, we're talking about the Pixies, so it would be "Black Francis," not "Frank Black."

I did not write these posts.

Matthew Perpetua (Matthew Perpetua), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 11:25 (twenty-two years ago)

and neither did shakey mo collier write two of his. perhaps this isn't me writing this. somethings up.

m. (mitchlnw), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 11:30 (twenty-two years ago)

That's amazing news about iTunes now being available in the UK. There's been no announcement, has there?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 11:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Matthew, I flagged the 2 posts as being from an imposter (as proven by IP check) If shakey mo would like to point out which posts are not actually by him, then I'll flag them as well.

Pashmina (MODERATING) (Pashmina), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

It sounds like a really great Kaito song. And that stuff about no hook? please.

danh (danh), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

nine years pass...

New song BAGBOY. Is it just me or is this pretty good?

Doran, Friday, 28 June 2013 09:23 (twelve years ago)

And it features Kim Deal if I'm not mistaken.

Doran, Friday, 28 June 2013 09:23 (twelve years ago)

Sounds like it could've come off a mid-noughties album by the Fall. Mind you doesn't everything?

dschinghis kraan (NickB), Friday, 28 June 2013 09:48 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, that's definitely Kim at 1:40. Man, this is kinda great.

suspiciously coincidental.

billstevejim, Friday, 28 June 2013 12:11 (twelve years ago)

Wow huh cool. Once that chorus kicked in hooooly crap yes

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Friday, 28 June 2013 15:08 (twelve years ago)

about two and a half minutes too long, but otherwise ok.

tylerw, Friday, 28 June 2013 15:10 (twelve years ago)

The timing of Kim's departure seemed a bit odd because it didn't appear to be tied to any Pixies activity. Maybe she had been working on new material with them when she decided to quit.

Moodles, Friday, 28 June 2013 15:19 (twelve years ago)

Two weeks after announcing the departure of bassist Kim Deal, the Pixies this morning surprised fans with the release of “Bagboy,” the band’s first new song since 2004 and one that certainly sounds like it features the backing vocals of the group’s now-former bassist.

UPDATE: That may sound like Kim Deal, but it’s not. Frontman Black Francis, posting, as he occasionally does, on the frankblack.net forums, writes: “I agree, it does sound a bit like Kim. But it’s my good friend Jeremy Dubs, one of the best people I’ve had the pleasure to know, both socially and professionally.”

Dubs is the singer of Bunnies, and used to be with The Bennies, a group that toured with the Pixies and Frank Black in the past, and who has previously been rumored to be involved with a new Pixies record.

On a Facebook post from Sean Rayburn, the band’s webmaster who is putting together a new Pixies photo book, Dubs confirms: “That’s not Kim, that’s me.”

lol at frank black -- "hmm now that you mention it, it DOES sound like her"
