Tell Me What To Buy!

I've decided to go to my localish Borders store for some perusing (& to use their fancy new listening stations!), and I never know what to buy, so bring it!

RULES:
- please only list 3 albums
- please offer a short (10-20 words) reason I should buy them

Otherwise, go gonzo. I might even tell you what I bought! (ooooo!)

(thinking of the kinds of things they have at Borders)

Aldo Brizzi, Brizzi do Brasil: Italian composer drafts pretty/avant pieces for Brazilian stars (Caetano, Gil, Tom Ze, Virginia Rodrigues, others) to sing: sublime but kinda fucked-up

Bersuit, La Argentinidad Al Palo: All the rage and humor and sexiness and sarcasm of an entire nation, focused through ska and metal and techno and touching latin ballads. Plus swearing.

Sara Evans, Restless: Might be country, might be pop, doesn't matter; three of the best songs of the last year and the filler's even better.

ALSO:
- don't limit it to what you thunk Borders might carry

Noneusch Explorer Series - Bali: Gamelan & Kecak

This is a really dynamic/energetic Gamelan album with SICK drum cuing, and vaired instrumentation. The 2nd and last songs are the best.

borders' international

Dykehouse - Midrange: Everything you loved about dreampop in 1989-91 on one record.

Actually, that's the only thing I've been listening to for several days. If you're looking for a book, Gregory by Marc Hempel just got a snazzy new re-release (the first two volumes in one handy book). One of the most dryly funny comics I've ever read.

AC/DC - Highway to Hell
Brian Eno - Here Come the Warm Jets
Slayer - Season in the Abyss

I don't doubt that, Matt -
all I'm saying is, "Expand
your horizons, kids".

NOTE: I almost bought that Gretchen Wilson (is that her name?) CD last time I went; it was cheap, and the ILM banter intrigued me, but I was scared off because I have (irrational?) (of course it's irrational!) phear of popular country music. (I think I bought the Cooper Temple Clause platter instead. Tee hee.) This is just to say I might come correct this evening.

Oh, god, I wouldn't mind springing for the Eno remasters, but that shit's priced at $19! I'd rather eat 6 Grilled Stuft Burritos (& a box of Exlax) for that much, y'know?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 18:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Exlax?

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd rather eat 6 Grilled Stuft Burritos (& a box of Exlax)

That seems redundant, actually.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

The Very Best of Badfinger - all the music you'll ever need.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

As far as I know, hstencil, there aren't any Thin Lizzy songs on that record.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

okay pick up Jailbreak too. Dave R. needs a little more vicarious excitement in his life, I know.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

id get whatever's on sale. borders is f'n expensive.

bill stevens (bscrubbins), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

jw's new handle has made me fall in love all over again

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Bill Stevens OTM! Found that Sara Evans CD, but NINETEEN DOLLARS! Couldn't find anything else Matt or Jon mentioned, tho (and Stephen's suggestions were made invalid because he didn't follow the rules) (and undoubtedly priced at NINETEEN DOLLARS). Unfortunately, Stencil got here too late, so I ended up buying:

AC Newman - _The Slow Wonder_ (on sale!)
The Reputation - _To Force a Fate_ (cheapish!)
The Fall - _The Real New Fall LP_ (cheapish!)
Java | Court Gamelan (Nonesuch Explorer Series) (least expensive of all!)

The 6 GSBs and Exlax isn't so much redundant as it's part of an elaborate & necessary contingency plan. And however did you know I needed excitement in my life, H?

Alastair Reynold - Revelation Space
J.R. Carroll - Cheaters
