I thought people had to pay royalties on MP3 encoders to some mysterious company that invented them. Is this no longer the case?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 20:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I used FairStars Audio converter which seemed ok except that I had to pay for it (around $25, maybe?).

www.cdex.n3.net - also free and very tweakable. The full CDParanoia ripping mode is probably as secure as EAC; an all-round bobby dazzler.

A WAV file is basically a Microsoft wrapper for audio data which could be in a number of raw formats; this PCM file of yours is probably a WAV file, but may not be. What is describing it as a PCM file?

I click properties and it says PCM file there.

If you chose to show extensions, is it a .wav file?

dbPowerAmp is a pretty handy and free program for converting almost anything to almost anything

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I use Easy CD-DA for everything. I highly recommend it.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

(dbpoweramp uses lame to encode to mp3, btw)

mookieproof (mookieproof), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

i use dcPoweramp too. you can do mp4's with it too.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

hmm, maybe I am asking the wrong thing. and need to dumb things down more for myself.

So I did a DJ mix in one of those DJ mix programmes, and it's saved as some sort of wav type file, but it's 600 megabytes in size. How do I shrink it into an mp3? I tried using lame and it's still the same size.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:30 (twenty-two years ago)

have you got musicmatch on yer computer Ronan?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

yep

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:37 (twenty-two years ago)

ok on the file menu theres a command called convert.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:40 (twenty-two years ago)

if you can SEE the .wav mix in the source box you should be able to use this to convert. if not you're gonna need something else.

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

am i getting too dumb?

gaz (gaz), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:48 (twenty-two years ago)

hooray this seems to be working. anyone fancy being my host for this evening? no hurry of course, I can share the wealth whenever....

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 21:53 (twenty-two years ago)

thanks gaz and everyone else btw.

To answer the original question: Atkins.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Personally I use Wavelab. Options on formatting and solid.

cRaiG (craig!), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I tried using lame and it's still the same size.

hmm. maybe this is why my new 100 gig hard drive filled up so fast

common_person (common_person), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 02:48 (twenty-two years ago)
