yolanda perez = "frenetic post-punk prog"!

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

haha oh wait i misread

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 23:26 (twenty-two years ago)

So Chuck, if I sent the Voice clips...what do you think the odds would be of them actually entertaining the notion of me writing for them? Just curious.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Um, well, I'm the music editor, Alex. And I use new writers all the time (even ask Geeta), but space is really tight all the time and a zillion other writers are pitching me at the same time as everybody else (even ask Geeta), so it depends what you're pitching and when. Right now, my section is backlogged for months, to be honest. But I'm always open to *considering* new writers. The editors of the other sections tend to use fewer freelancers than me, but many of them are open to new writers, too (even ask Geeta). So it can't hurt to try! (I still say people should *snailmail* clips, but that might be just because I'm an old fuddy duddy who hates printing out email...)

so geeta, is it true that the voice uses new writers all the time? what about the other sections?

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

hi jess!

geeta (geeta), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

hello!

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

that doesnt really answer my question, though. this is false advertising.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 15 June 2004 23:49 (twenty-two years ago)

since we're airing our laundry in public, did you get the Newman review I sent you, Chuck?

Brian Wilson (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I just know that I'll forever be thinking to myself "It'd be nice to really pitch something to the Voice" and never get around to it. D'oh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Just pitch. I haven't written anything for Chuck (though I do write film for the Voice), but I have pitched, and pitching is key. By pitching widely and passing clips around I've found that freelance opportunities open up. Most alt-weeklies are at least quasi-receptive to music freelancers if your work is up to snuff.

Ah, you see, I'd much rather READ everyone else on here who writes for 'em, see. Besides which, the good Mr. Matos has been helping me greatly with his editorial work for what I do do for the Seattle Weekly, so I still tend to regard myself in training. Also I have no idea what the kids listen to, but fuck 'em, I apparently didn't know that when I WAS a kid.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 00:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Chuck, yer licks column this week was fucking beautiful.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 01:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I smell nepotism.

(kidding! this column is a great idea)

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Brian Wilson: Yes indeedy. I hope it to run soon, despite the backlog.

Skrot: thanks!!
