Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I saw him recently. Let's just say the New Folk Underground can stay there.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny, that. I heard "Fall" and the first thing I thought was he sounded like Dave Matthews, which is why I haven't bought either of Banhart's records, as I hate Dave Matthews so bad I keep hoping he will die in a bizzare chicken fucking accident or something equally hilarious.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Who is the song "Will Is My Friend" about? If it was about me I would be incredibly embarassed. There should be like a SNL-type comedy sketch where everytime Devendra Banhart meets a new person he writes a song about them and everybody gets really embarassed and annoyed.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

TEH SUCK.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:35 (twenty-two years ago)

more like Devendra BADhart

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:36 (twenty-two years ago)

You say Dave Matthews, I say Marc Bolan.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

AWESOME! this is the backlash I've been waiting for (and am in total agreement with).

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Marc Bolan don't sound a thing like Dave Matthews, unless the latter was on helium.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:41 (twenty-two years ago)

I have actually never heard Tyrannasaurus Rex cause I have never in my life seen thier albums for sale anywhere, so I guess I wouldn't know that much.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I just listened to Rejoicing this morning for the first time. My first thought was John Fahey backing up Billie Holiday.

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:42 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil, I kiss you

Banhart was FAR better than his co-headliner, Joanna Newsom, though

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Devandra Banhart and Dave Matthews aren't fit to smell Marc Bolan's shit.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:43 (twenty-two years ago)

well, Bolan is the most ridiculously overrated figure in rock ever anyway, so hey

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost to Matos - oh see I like Joanna though (no matter who her cousin is). She was nice on tour last year (but I can't see myself buying her recs).

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Devendra, whatever, what is he, hindu?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:45 (twenty-two years ago)

can you see yourself tapping that azzzz?

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

dunno anything about her cousin, just found her Lily Tomlin-as-Edith Ann w/a harp thing really annoying.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

xpost but no matter - he wishes.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

well, Bolan is the most ridiculously overrated figure in rock ever anyway, so hey

*cough*

Brian Wilson (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:46 (twenty-two years ago)

don't forget Dylan and, uh, Brian Wilson, Mr. Brian Wilson dude.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

and I do like some Bolan, but yeah

xpost: you're not getting *that* much argument out of me on that one, A.M., but really, it's not a competition

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Dylan isn't overrated. Brian Wilson certainly is.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I liked Devendra when I saw him do Nina Simone songs in drag. He was funny.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd quibble with Dylan if the word Dylanologist didn't exist.

Brian Wilson (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:48 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a Dylanarian.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a Dylanee.

Brian Wilson (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I just like a lot of his records a whole lot.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:50 (twenty-two years ago)

dude Matos when the NY Times puts Prince on the cover of the Book Review and runs an appreciative piece of your book written by David Brooks, well that will be the day my brain explodes or something.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Dylan in the past ten years is pretty overrated!

I like some of the new folk type of stuff, Jolie Holland and CocoRosie mostly. Devandra Banhart blows, he's getting the hype his Angels of Light pals should get.

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I haven't gotten to hear much of Devvy's stuff but everytime I see his CD in the store all I can think is "I don't remember approving this."

Brian Wilson (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

So would you say it would or would not be worth going to see Banhart/Newsome at Bowery Ballroom next Monday?

I like the Joanna Newsom record pretty well, better than Rejoicing. For the record I like Rejoicing just fine, I just like making fun of him and I'm bored, and the dave mathews thing is true.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:52 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: Devendra Banhart VS Adam Green

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

I catalog Dylan songs based on the number of notes used using specialized Dylan software that I have created. I have a seperate database for all water imagery in his songs that is cross-referenced with the Bible. The software was devised using codes that align with North Atlantic tide conditions.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:53 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: Adam Green vs. Sonny Bono

Brian Wilson (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

well, hstencil, my brain would explode too! but I don't think there's anything wrong w/Dylan being on the cover of the NYTBR, anymore than I would if Prince were on it.

I'll take Adam Green even if he hasn't made a good record since the first Moldy Peaches one.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

scott, that was a scarily accurate impersonation of certain Dylan freaks whose books I have glanced through

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:54 (twenty-two years ago)

TS: scott seward vs. David Brooks

(I know who's got the better methodology/rigor applied to statistics)

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I have heard of this Dylan.

well, Bolan is the most ridiculously overrated figure in rock ever anyway, so hey

Yeah, but no Bolan, no Prince. *frowns at dark clouds rising above the northern horizon*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Banhart needs to name is next album Frowning At Clouds.

Brian Wilson (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

"Whoooo-ooo-oooo's got the crack?"

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I didn't think there was anything wrong with the issue, or Dylan's appearance, just that it's a l'il too typical given the Times's demo. Even when covering new stuff they take a "it will remind you of the boomer shit you loved when you were a kid" stance, usually.

Also I'm still a little pissed they fucked up my bro's name on the Animal Collective photos a couple weeks back in the A&L section.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:56 (twenty-two years ago)

haha yes Prince got all his moves from Marc Bolan! Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Mick Jagger, Sly Stone--who the hell are *they*?!

yes, it's very typical hstencil, it's annoying on that level, but Lethem's piece was good and it makes me wanna read the book. Lucinda Williams' thing should never have made it out of the editor's inbox, however.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Dylan's appearance in lingerie ads is not as some might say a cash-in move but rather a subversive take on the fetishization and exploitation of the female form in our modern age a political statement that is rife with implications and this is a maneuver not made by a musician since the heady days of the Rolling Thunder Revue tour in the '60s when Dylan etc etc

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Adam Green is infinitely more cringeworthy than Devendra, who I enjoy.

(like eighty bazilloin xposts.)

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 19:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"There's no wrong way/To fuck a girl with no legs/Just tell her you love her/As she's crawling away"

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

haha yes Prince got all his moves from Marc Bolan! Little Richard, Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Mick Jagger, Sly Stone--who the hell are *they*?!

Never heard of them.

"Cream" is the obvious homage to the obvious song, natch, but more than once I've heard these weird cross-currents between the two -- if Prince can obsess over Kate Bush he can just as easily know more than "Bang A Gong." This isn't something I'd go to war over but it's part and parcel of the man's work to some extent.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I like that "Jessica" song I'll admit but it seems to be a little too obviously "join me indie fux in 'sincerely' mourning Jessica Simpson's lack of self-awareness"

Gear! (Gear!), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Prince learned from a lot of hippies and glam folk; Bolan was one of both. but "no Bolan = no Prince" is just batshit insane.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 20:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Prince totally stole his look from Joni Mitchell though.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 20:03 (twenty-two years ago)

SEND THE KINGS OF LEON TO IRAQ NOW

I'm all for that!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 21:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I still say that Dave Matthews sounds like a cartoon donkey.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 21:36 (twenty-two years ago)

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY? HEEE-HAWWWWW! LOL

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 21:39 (twenty-two years ago)

T.S.:
"Each strand of her hair / Is really insect eyes / And each hole in her tongue / Is always occupied / By the milk of the sun."
vs.
"Up and down the puppy's hair/fleas and ticks jump everywhere/ cause of original sin"

Neb Reyob (Ben Boyer), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

if these lyrics are any indication methinks Devendra Banhart=HIPPIE FUXXOR

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 21:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Well duh.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

vs. ""The sight of bridges and balloons/ Makes calm canaries irritable/ They caw and claw all afternoon/ 'Catenaries and dirigibles/ Brace and buoy the living room/ A loom of metal, warp-woof-wimble/ And a thimblesworth of milky moon/ Can touch hearts larger than a thimble." (Newsom)

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

DOES DEVENDRA BANHART HAVE A GMAIL ACCOUNT?

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

How's the Hoobastank cover coming, Ned :-b

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 21:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Watch me buy "Rejoicing in the Hands" and really digging it and having to repent.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a fine album. Finally, a musician who can write their own songs, play their own instruments and still convey a positive image for today's youth.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha.

How's the Hoobastank cover coming, Ned :-b

Currently rotting, I think.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

I really like Devendra's stuff a whole lot - I think it is goth for SECRET GOTHS who either no longer want to rep for goth but still have the disease, or who were always too pussy to rep for goth but inside were GOTH 4 LIFE

Joanna Newsome has one of my favorite couplets this year: "And the signifieds dance with the signifiers/And we all fall down slack-jawed to marvel at words," but it's my understanding that not everybody digs this kinda thing

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

AMG seems underwhelmed with DB's output so far: 3 stars, 3 1/2 stars...better set them straight, Ned, or I'll never hear him! I am a complete zombie who cannot buy CDs rated less than 4 stars on AMG!!! Kill me.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm, J0hn, I like Newsom a lot, but that's actually one of my least favorite lyrics on the album!

jaymc (jaymc), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

if DB had some songs he'd be worthy of the hype sez me.

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I just d/l'd a Joanna Newsome mp3. She sounds like Daniel Johnston! I like it!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:33 (twenty-two years ago)

DB boosters please recommend a DB song besides "Fall" for me to download. Maybe I just got the wrong impression?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

"lend me your teeth"

La Monte (La Monte), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

"Michigan State"!

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

"Autumn's Child," which is where I think he suddenly gets really really REALLY good.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Man, this Joanna mp3, "clam, crab, cockle, cowrie" fucking RULES! I'm totally buying this CD now.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll go with Ned's cuz I was kinda picking on him. Plus he lurves Jandek so I trust him. Autumn's Child it is!

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Suit yourself.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

It's a simple and very straightforward song. But I also think it's incredibly affecting.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

from the J. Newsom: "Your skin is something that I stir into my tea/And I am watching you"
Yeah! her lyrics are rad. Does DB have any like that?

Don't worry Adam, I'll do yours next.

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

DB has lines about taking his teeth out dancing that I like.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

We know, we know: we had a choice -
we chose "rejoice"

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I just d/ld the same Newsom and found it gaggingly cutesy pie faux naif. she needs to listen to some Judee Sill . and now so do I

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

damn, for a second I thought we were talking about the dBs. In that case, I'd recommend Cycles Per Second, Dynamite, Fight and Amplifier.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 23:11 (twenty-two years ago)

gaggingly cutesy pie faux naif=yes it is. like I said it sounds like Daniel Johnston and that's why I like it.

Judee Sill=like a better Joanna Newsom? I'll have to check that out

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

my favorite JN songs are "Inflammatory Writ" and "Peach, Plum, Pear". These are coincidentally the only 2 without harp I think. They are all pretty awesome, by my favorite overall is "Inflammatory Writ", which is super awesome. I first heard the album today though.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm a Dylanarian.
-- scott seward (skotro...), June 16th, 2004.

I'm a Dylanee.
-- Brian Wilson (anthonymicci...), June 16th, 2004.

I'm a Dylanettante.

de, Wednesday, 16 June 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

ok so her new record's on Drag City, where do you go to get the 2 self-released ones? or are they OOP?

AaronHz (AaronHz), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Daniel OTM - "Peach, Plum, Pear" is incredible.

I love the whole album, could be my favorite disc of the year so far. Her voice is pretty much the definition of "acquired taste" though.

Michael F Gill (Michael F Gill), Wednesday, 16 June 2004 23:54 (twenty-two years ago)

...if only because I thought The Milk-Eyed Mender was going to be my big DISCOVERY of 2004, kinda like Tara Jane O'Neil a few years ago.

jaymc, please please please tell me you're joking.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 03:07 (twenty-two years ago)

oh stence well of course everybody down in KY knew about TJ years ago but the rest of us had to wait for In the Sun Lines

I keed, I keed

dude, Rusty, dude.

I see London, I see France, I see stence's indie-pants

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 17 June 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

(in the interest of disclosure I gotta come correct: the first time I heard Rusty I had the sort of omgwtf experience that people usually attribute to Pet Sounds or Sergeant Pepper)

J0hn Darn1elle (J0hn Darn1elle), Thursday, 17 June 2004 12:39 (twenty-two years ago)

dude, when I first heard it I thought "where the hell is the bass drum?!?!?"

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 12:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think Jaymc is joking.

AdamL :') (nordicskilla), Thursday, 17 June 2004 12:49 (twenty-two years ago)

that's what I'm worried about.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

DAVE MATTHEWS??? huh??

fizzcaraldo (Justin M), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

i mean, that's a pretty big stretch.

fizzcaraldo (Justin M), Friday, 18 June 2004 04:08 (twenty-one years ago)

not at all

Brad Laner (Brad Laner), Friday, 18 June 2004 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't hear it myself. Frightening thought, really.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 18 June 2004 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

If Devendra Banhart were actually "folky" I might like him more.

The thing about gessoing is kind of startling. But maybe it's not, so much.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I heard his new CD being played again in some record store last night. ugh.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 28 June 2004 23:25 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Speaking of Leons, he sounds quite a bit like Leon Redbone.
