Pete Yorn: The New Tom Petty

That's right. He's comfortable music for 30-somethings that can also be appreciated by young kids and old grandparents. He will be around for 20 more years and retain this exact level of pretty-famous-ness he has, but never be a mega-sensation, just like Tom Petty. He will release albums and it will take you years to realize they've been released. 10 years from now, there will be 15 albums (including all the comps and b sides and soundtracks and whatnot) and you will only have 3 of those albums but you will think you've somehow heard every Pete Yorn song. 20 years from now you will have purchased most of those first 15 albums and you will realize you were wrong; you only heard a few of those songs but they are all equally good. You wish you had been listening to those albums 10 years ago. Now you have lost out and there are more Pete Yorn albums to buy. Suddenly, you realize Pete Yorn seems to be as prolific as Elvis and you will never catch up. If you listened to all the Pete Yorn albums back-to-back from that point on, it will still never be the same as if you had just got them one at a time when they were first released like you were supposed to because, hey, you could have been listening to them back-to-back since way back when.

I have a real big problem jumping back and forth between tenses. It happening now, no it's the future, no wait, it's the past!

Nude Spock, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know where you been, but in my little world, Tom Petty is pretty damn mega-sensational, it's hard to turn on an American FM station and not hear "Breakdown" or whatever. Peter Yorn is a snore, though.

Andy, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom Petty is someone everyone likes, but nobody really owns much of in my experience.

Nude Spock, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Not everybody likes Tom Petty, believe me.

Kris, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

has anyone hear ever actually heard a pete yorn song?

g, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

has anyone "here" ever heard a pete yorn song?

g, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, Pete Yorn was just on Reverb with Weezer and Guided By Voices. He was last to play and was pretty bummed at that point cuz the show was so lame. Anyway, every song he played, I was like, "Hey, I know that song" and that's what caused me to post this thread. He's got a bunch of songs on the radio and I had no idea who it was. He's good except there's one song where he sounds a little nasal and it reminds me a little too much of Counting Crows, whom I hate. Correct use of "whom"? Probably not. Anyway, Pete Yorn is the kind of music you can like, but you just don't go fanatical about him. The same way a hater of Tom Petty would probably think he's just a lame old fuck, I can see future haters of Pete Yorn saying this (when he gets old, that is).

Incidentally, I've noticed that dancey pop acts are lauded here on ILM and rocky pop acts are booed pretty good. It's interesting and I feel not one way or another about it.

Nude Spock, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

g, did you notice your email looks just like [email protected] to someone with dyslexia?

Nude Spock, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

spock: y-you can't be right. i m-mean, ILM is rockist, right?

Sterling Clover, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, not when it's mainstream or fairly-hyped standard rock, ya know. Especially if it's fairly-hyped and then NO MAINSTREAM SUCCESS! ILMers love that cuz then it justifies the opinion that "hey, they must suck, see?"

The Strokes are sort of an exception cuz they're, like, punkish retro and it's unique for right now. Still, I bet the ones who like them will get bored of 'em soon. It is mostly cool to like subversive rock yet be snuggly with the cutest of pop acts. Dunno why.

Nude Spock, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tom Petty is inoffensive....at BEST. Yawn Rock. Not terrible, but as far from exciting and visceral as one could get. I've only seen the video for Yorn's new single, "For Nancy" ("`Cos it Already Is!"), which features the hirsute gent running around San Francisco's Lower Haight like a maniac. I don't know anything about him -- apart from the fact that he's garnering the same sorta pretty-boy-who-can- actually-deliver-the-goods buzz that graced (rimshot) Jeff Buckley. He could vanish tomorrow.

alex in nyc, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Exciting and visceral- these are good things?

Nude Spock, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He's got a big skinny hook-nose and adam's apple. He only really looks good in subdued colors and especially in black and white. He is Franky Zappa-ish or Howard Sterny. Not too far off from Rick Ocasek. Still, girls got all horned up about a lot of ugly rockers. If you saw him on Reverb, you know he's ugly but can manage to take a good photo.

P.S. Informer, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Okay, so maybe not everyone enjoys VISCERAL music, but surely EXCITING is a good thing, no? I have nothing against Tom Petty, but his music seems pretty conventional in the blandest of possible ways. I mean, sure, he rocks harder than, say, Jackson Browne, but that's hardly worth getting excited about...let alone interested in.

alex in nyc, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh, I dunno, I'm interested in a lot of things including watching grass grow and staring at the walls, so I find much to enjoy when there's actually music coming out from somewhere.

Nude Spock, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He's horrible. Pete Yorn is VH1's wet dream. Someone should go break all his guitars.

Lindsey B, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I almost forgot to type Tom Petty is much better.

Lindsey B, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Lindsey speaks from the heart on this, and my heart too. Though I can't say I'm a Petty fan either, one or two songs aside. Anyway, point being: Yorn = music for people afraid of excitement.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I tried some mp3s when I heard the Springstein comparisons. zzzzzzzzzz.

bnw, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think a good majority of the reservations people have for Yorn is that his voice is SUPER layed back. Its def. like Petty's in that kind of "smoke afew jays, sit on the porch and talk about life" way. I actually do like the harmonization that he Brought to the song "For Nancy." Thats a really good song. It had enegery, feedback, and a good video. As far as "Life on A Chain" goes, it seems a little boring. Nothing really dynamic to it. Crap, I just confused my arguement. I think he really is hit or miss. Most of the time miss I guess.

Brock, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yorn = music for people afraid of excitement.

Or bored of it. Go ahead and tell me what's "exciting music". I guarantee you it bores me. I can be in a room packed to the gills with pounding, "exciting" music and be bored as hell. In fact, I usually am. Really fast and groovy music is just background noise to me. I like it, but yawn.

Nude Spock, Saturday, 17 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Pardon me, only the first sentence was meant to be italicized.

PETE YORN ROCKS AND EVERYONE WHO KNOWS WHATS UP KNOWS THAT. If you go to his show you will know that too.

Jeff Hodges, Wednesday, 2 January 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you put me in at a Pete Yorn show, I would gladly pay money to depart hastily.

What's wrong with you people? There is *nothing* boring about Pete Yorn! He kicks ass, and his live shows are fabulous. And ugly? He is a far stretch from ugly. He *will* be around for a long time.

Pamela, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, but gonorrhea's been around for a while too, and I'd rather not encounter that.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yorn = music for people afraid of excitement.
Oh PUH-leeez. I liked laid-back musick as much as *exciting* music. We don't always need V/VM or Metal Machine Musick in our lives, now do we? Or maybe I should say: people who don't like Yorn---> people trying to prove sth. Though what? You tell me.

helen, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Okay I just came across as a complete ass. I am usually only half an ass. The other half being dumb.

helen, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

PETE YORN ROCKS AND EVERYONE WHO KNOWS WHATS UP KNOWS THAT.

Yeah ok.

poops mcgee, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I have discussed this matter with Mr Raposa and as we have determined that Mr Yorn fails to HONOUR THE FIRE we have concluded that he is not the new Tom Petty. He is the new Pete Droge.

John Darnielle, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

When is the Winona Ryder effect going to kick in and destroy his career? I'm waiting.

Nicole, Friday, 15 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think he needs to have his 'runaway train' before that happens.

UPDATE: WHAT'S GOING ON>>>>
Currently I am residing in Los Angeles, CA. I have been here for some time recording with people of various talents. AS OF TODAY, 11, MAY, 2005.....I am in the process of mixing THE NEW RECORD in a BALLROOM in GRIFFITH PARK. I recorded 24 NEW SONGS...however this WILL NOT BE A DOUBLE ALBUM. MOST of the TRACKS were produced with MICHAEL BEINHORN (Herbie Hancock, Social Distortion, Violent Femmes, Soundgarden, Korn, yes...Korn!) and myself, while others were produced by DON FLEMING (Sonic Youth, Teenage Fanclub) and myself. THE recording process was a roller coaster ride filled with moments of triumph as well as frustration. IT has NOW come together as something that I am extremely proud of and could not have done on my own. Some songs were recorded "live" with MINIBAR and Joe Kennedy providing the backup. Others were built from the ground up with either myself or Dave Grohl playing drums. We were fortunate enough to coax the great Leon Russell in for a day to play some excellent piano. Natalie Maines sings on two songs, while Emily Robison and Martie Maguire add banjo and fiddle respectively. Farmer Dave Scher (All Night Radio, Beachwood Sparks) provides pedal and lap steel guitar, as well as some non-conventional organ. Zach Schaeffer plays bass on a few songs. Doc Dauer and Ramee Jaffe showed up for some guitar and B-3 as well. Oh, and it has all been captured on film which is NOW being edited together for your enjoyment.

PLAN ON HEARING THIS RECORD in THE NEAR FUTURE. AS FAR AS TOURING....STAY TUNED. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME & LOYALTY.

-PY

That Dave Grohl is such a drumslut.

ratty, Tuesday, 3 January 2006 21:29 (twenty years ago)

ned, what part of "roller coaster ride filled with moments of triumph as well as frustration" don't you understand?

i haven't thought about don fleming for a long, long time.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Has Don Fleming recorded an album since 1992?

'Twan (miccio), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 21:30 (twenty years ago)

Pete Yorn = Tom Petty minus hits and hooks.

Abbadavid Berman (Hurting), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 21:33 (twenty years ago)

Which = thousands of other songwriters.

Tom Petty = Tom Petty minus Mike Campbell

Start with the first syllable again plz.

Mike Campbell deserves his own thread.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 21:36 (twenty years ago)

Yorn's post is fun to read if you imagine him suddenly breaking into a scream, Al Pacino-style, every time he uses caps. "Some songs were recorded "live" with MINIBAR!!!!"

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 21:51 (twenty years ago)

my fave yorn yarn is still the time when tower in philly was selling his album for 99 cents and had huge displays for it that stood there for a year and it never looked like there was ever a dent made in the stacks of CDs until finally they changed it to "buy a cd and get a pete yorn cd for free (!!)" and the CDs STILL sat there for months and then one day all the displays were finally gone. i think i posted that somewhere else once, but it's worth repeating.

scott seward (scott seward), Tuesday, 3 January 2006 21:57 (twenty years ago)

again: who the fuck is pete yorn. if i cared enough, i'd search for him on allmusic, but i don't.

Produced by Frank Black doncha know. Uh.

Lead single "Precious Stone" is already getting airplay on numerous AAA radio stations, including WTMD/Baltimore, WEHM/Long Island and KZMV/Breckenridge, CO. "Yorn goes full on rock in his new song. Complete with overdriven guitars, Yorn's signature voice and a chorus with a hook that will stick for hours," said Filtermagazine.com while myoldkentuckyblog.com noted: "Ragged guitars and rock-steady drumming provide spartan accompaniment to Yorn's beat down delivery, and in this instance, less is so much more." Spin.com called "Precious Stone" a "back-to-basics pop rock track with enough gritty electric guitars, hummable melodies, and lovelorn lyrics to make Wallflowers-era Jakob Dylan blush."

The new album is a visceral, off-the-cuff collection recorded in five short days in 2008. Yorn was making Back & Fourth in Nebraska when he got an email from Black suggesting that they record together. Intrigued, Pete flew to Salem, OR, where the two set up an impromptu studio. The resulting songs are raw, born of shattered nerves and shifting dreams, yet edged with hope.

"Pete Yorn & J.D. King are THE OLMS"

Uh.

After a seven-year friendship, Pete Yorn and J.D. King stepped into King's Southern California home studio for a meeting of the musical minds. The result: a brand new band and a familiar but unique style all their own. The Olms self-titled debut release features a free-wheeling sound, which melds folk, rock, country-rock, and Laurel Canyon pop, thanks to jangly acoustic guitar, wistful melodies, radiant harmonies, and unexpected instrumental flourishes. Songs like the strummy "Wanna Feel It" and "Someone's Else's Girl" glow with a lush '60s vibe, while the honky-tonk-ish "On The Line" shows the duo's harder-rocking side with hints of psychedelic organ. "The album has an old-sounding feel, but I feel like it still sounds really fresh," Yorn says. "It sounds uniquely like us and a hybrid of our influences, from my love of Brit-pop and groups like The Beach Boys and The Kinks, to J.D.'s love for British Invasion bands like The Animals, as well as bluegrass and country music."
