claims the original Smiths bassist in Q's Smiths special.

trappist monkey, Thursday, 17 June 2004 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Forgotten his name though. I read it in the library.

trappist monkey, Thursday, 17 June 2004 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, no he did not. Morrissey did not, I mean.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 17 June 2004 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

almost as cool as a gay hardcore band, i guess.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 17 June 2004 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this bloke a liying liar then Mark?

trappist monkey, Thursday, 17 June 2004 12:55 (twenty-two years ago)

not sure how this would have changed the smiths. *snicker*

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 17 June 2004 13:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It means he does not understand the bloke wot writes the songs and that.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 17 June 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Rourke said this????

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 June 2004 13:47 (twenty-two years ago)

He certainly succeeded.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:35 (twenty-two years ago)

What? The Smiths are the gayest band of all time!!

Mr. Snrub, Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get how you are a hardcore gay band? Did he want to wear nothing but leather chaps, cover Village People song and fuck each other on stage?

David Allen (David Allen), Thursday, 17 June 2004 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

ILM is certainly reaching new heights today.

King Kobra (King Kobra), Thursday, 17 June 2004 18:14 (twenty-two years ago)

What? The Smiths are the gayest band of all time!!

Hmmmm. I think Marr, Rourke and Joyce might strenuously dissagree with ya there. Moreover, if I'm not mistaken, most of their songs were written within non-gender specific perspective (much like the Buzzcocks), rendering their personal sexual preference moot.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 June 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Joyce was getting plugged by the Moz, though, right?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

flux of pink bungholes?

cutty (mcutt), Thursday, 17 June 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

You're confusing Moz & Joyce with Boy George and Jon Moss, methinks.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 June 2004 19:04 (twenty-two years ago)

no, I think that was a pretty active rumor around the Smiths, if I remember correctly.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 19:05 (twenty-two years ago)

also I wonder what just the implications of "hardcore" are in the UK.

Joseph McCombs, Thursday, 17 June 2004 19:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I thought Morrissey used to brag about being "asexual"?

Henry Rollins denies he's gay, too.

So I sat my ass down and cooled it for another hour 'til the show went on. It was great. He talked about his first time in Manchester. He talked about a talking show put on in L.A.... the same one that got taped for the video Talking from the Box. This is kind of funny... He talked about preparing for the show since he produced it as well as performed. At one point, somebody came up to him and asked if he could get a backstage pass for Morrissey. Rollins thought he was joking and told him to fuck off... a little while later he looked out into the audience and saw: it really was Morrissey. The Mo-man himself!

Later, during the show, he did this little bit where he talked about the riots in L.A. He talked about how he hit the streets to go check out the carnage. There was a record store (a chain store) that was being protected...rather pathetically, actually...by two unarmed security guards. "All right, you cement. Stay there!" So anyway, the looters started to close in on the record store. The rent-a-cops, in a wild mood of creativity, came over to the group of on-lookers (of which Rollins was a part) and put forth the proposition that they were going to deputize the group in order to 'protect the neighborhood.' Rollins, being "more cynical than your average stadium full of people" came up with the following argument against it:

"Ok...so what you're saying is you want me to take a rock in the face for Paula Abdul. Now, ok, let me get this right. I'm supposed to take a 2"x4" across my chest for Bono..."

Now I might interject this last bit of fun. Earlier on in the show, Rollins had to explain to the British audience the cultural differences of digital insults on either side of the Atlantic. The United States has its all-too-familiar method: clenching the fist with the exception of the single longest digit in the center of the hand - the eternal middle finger. In Britain, this is generally understood, but it's far more characteristic to use both the middle and index fingers (a reversal of the peace sign...ironically, all the hippies and peaceniks were/are just flipping themselves off.)

"...I'm supposed to stand in front of a huge piece of plate glass and try and defend it from five gnarly youths who want to go right over my head...for Morrissey."

It was at this point where Rollins flipped off Morrissey where he sat in the audience, all the while screaming "FUCK YOU! FUCK YOU! FUCK YOU! FUCK YOU! FUCK YOU!" The audience, froze, turned to look straight at the Mo-Man, laughed, clammed up, and turned quickly back to face the stage. This occurred during the first ten or fifteen minutes of his talk. He had to sit and live with this insult for another hour or so. Ouch..

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

otm hstencil on pansy division... "DICK OF DEATH!"... also, how about shudder to think?

msp, Thursday, 17 June 2004 19:23 (twenty-two years ago)

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 17 June 2004 19:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Henry Rollins denies he's gay, too.

Well, he's not. He'd probably be cooler if he was, but he's not.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 June 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

that's not what I hear.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 19:25 (twenty-two years ago)

"Apocalypse Now, of course, contains no female characters to speak of, and I suspect that this is part of its appeal to Rollins. It's perhaps over-facile to read the rage Rollins feels against his mother behind his fear of women, but it's difficult to avoid this conclusion, just as his exaggerated hatred of the police seems transparently to be a reaction to his bullying, militaristic father. Coupled with the hyper-masculine posturing, the obsessive bodybuilding, the boot-camp haircut and the view of life as an endless combat zone, a picture begins to emerge of Rollins as a frightened little boy who wasn't taught how to love. Small wonder, too, that Rollins has become something of a gay icon. Persistent rumours have it that Rollins is gay himself and going to come out any time soon... I don't believe this, but Rollins' wholesale denial of all things feminine, emotional and `soft' does little to dispel the speculation. One of LA's most eligible bachelors he decidedly ain't."

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

it's this kind of stuff that always had me thinking otherwise:

Well, you can believe what you want, but I think you're reading too much into his public persona.

I love "Apocalypse Now" too, by the way. Does that make me gay?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 June 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I also love "Glenn Garry Glenross" (no a single female in the cast). I guess I should just go fetch myself a pink feather boa, then.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 17 June 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

If you look at the naked 'woman' on that Rollins Band sleeve, the neck and chin look very like an erect penis.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 17 June 2004 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

If anyone cares, I think, yes, the original intention was for the Smiths to be more overtly homo-erotic, hence the go-go dancing of James Maker at the first few gigs.

ILX, Friday, 18 June 2004 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Who was the original bassist, Mary?

Is the a trick question? Rourke, innit?

Mary (Mary), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you all realize that Morrissey threatened to sue his huge internet fan club (Morrissey-solo.com) for chattering about rumours? Keep fanning the flames: it would be so cool if ILX got served a summons by Morrissey.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 18 June 2004 00:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Bah. I am going to have to go to the library/shop, steal/buy that Q magazine and bring it home and type out the article word for word.
It's not Rourke who made this claim. It is someone else who the piece claims is the smiths' (i believe) original bassist.

trappist monkey, Friday, 18 June 2004 00:54 (twenty-two years ago)

It's the July issue, with Liam and Noel Gallagher on the front.
It has the '50 Greatest British albums' list (bleugh).
It's a tiny article attempting to induce us to buy the Q Smiths
Special, from which this nugget is taken.

trappist monkey, Friday, 18 June 2004 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

OK, its Dale Hibbert, and here's the quote: "The Smiths, originally was going to be a gay band. That's what they said. That's why I Want a Boy for my Birthday was going to be the first single." I'm failing to see why this is causing a panic.

Mary (Mary), Friday, 18 June 2004 01:16 (twenty-two years ago)

No panic. I like posting ephemera about pop bands. S'all.
I've got no problem with it. Some posters on here just seemed
to find it hard to believe (understandably blah blah)
so I was pissed off at myself that I couldn't be exact
and accurate.
Seriously, there is no agenda behind this.
I simply thought it was new information (for most
nonanoraks anyway ;- )).

trappist monkey, Friday, 18 June 2004 01:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, and thankyou for retrieving that tidbit. :- )

trappist monkey, Friday, 18 June 2004 01:29 (twenty-two years ago)

..., Friday, 18 June 2004 12:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe Premier:

"I have an ear that's beyond most human being's ears when it comes tomusic. My library, all hip-hop put aside, what I listen to at the crib, you can't front on it. I play nothing but raw shit. I like rock music, all that. AC/DC, Rush, Pat Benetar, Joan Jett, Simple Minds, Yes, Led Zeppelin, the Cars, I know my shit! Blue Oyster Cult, I can go any direction!

I used to be one of the only people in my high school who would wear the punk rock gear, with the double belts, the boots and all that! I wasn't afraid of that at all. At that time, that was the rebel style. That went into hip-hop culture too, because I remember how Flash and them was dressed, with the leather and the spikes and all. That punk rock and New Wave era was dope. You can't even compare it to the "punk" that's out now, you gotta know about groups like Fad Gadget, Tones on Tail, Bauhaus, old Depeche Mode, the Smiths. Morrissey is gay and I understood his lyrics for what they were saying, but at the same time I liked his music. It was dope and you can't front on it. I respected him with an open mind. Most people who are homophobic have some problems that way anyway, so I wasn't really afraid of it. They're just human beings and that's their preference. But I was into the Smiths, I was into Siouxsie and the Banshees, Devo, the B-52s, Talk Talk, I went to all those concerts. As a matter of fact, I found my memory book from high school and I got mad concert tickets of all kinds of shows I went to. I've been to see AC/DC millions of times, Iron Maiden, Van Halen, Genesis, all that."

AaronHz (AaronHz), Saturday, 19 June 2004 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

My point: jumping to conclusions about someone's sexuality based on dubious criteria like their fondness for films that happen not to feature members of a certain gender is ridiculous. Read the entire thread before you dole out haughty and needlessly imperious put-downs, Marco. And don't call me "dude".

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Saturday, 19 June 2004 09:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Those are dubious criteria for sure -- what no showtunes or Bette Midler LPs -- but I actually had to review Rollins' Get In The Van book and the attitude toward women displayed there was pretty confused if not completely fucked up. I don't know/care if the big lug's gay or whatever but he's got "issues" about masculinity.
Morrissey worked the asexual angle TO DEATH for the first couple years of The Smiths. What that says about his original intent I don't know. Maybe he heard Jimi Sommerville, the "wee belter" of Bronski Beat/Communards and decided to play it butch.

lovebug starski, Saturday, 19 June 2004 10:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Morrissey worked the asexual angle TO DEATH for the first couple years of The Smiths

But that, do you mean "all of the years of the Smiths"?

That Premier quote is a grand thing, it is.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 June 2004 15:31 (twenty-one years ago)

yay premier like blue oyster cult!

as far as the Henry Rollins thing....I don't have a tremendous knowledge of the man...but I will say (i think I mentioned this on another thread once) that I had a conversation with Grant Hart (the openly gay former drummer of Husker Du who did tons of touring with Hank back in the day)...and he kept saying how Henry needed to come out of the closet so he'd be less angry...obv. Hart is a somewhat scattershot, very eccentric drunken ex-junkie so take his opinion for what it's worth, but I thought it was interesting he kept saying that (and he brought it up like totally out of context of anything we were talking about)

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Saturday, 19 June 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

poor old grant hart... how is he doing these days anyway?

but anyway...
in the new mojo moz says he was disappointed by the breakup of the Smiths because he thought they were going to be the next Queen... and i think that was always his ambition - to be like Queen, or his heroes the NY Dolls - simultaneously macho and queer(ish) (like the skinhead and rockabilly gang imagery he likes) but in a far less obvious way than even "my beautiful laundrette" or something. "hardcore gay" sounds a little trite, a little simplistic ... or maybe just a little uncloseted.

Fritz Wollner (Fritz), Saturday, 19 June 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i read through this all just to find one instance of the band LIMP WRIST. come on, people!

also, uk hardcore...VOORHEES?

James.Cardis (james.cardis), Saturday, 19 June 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm coming to this thread a little late, but I always kind of thought the Smiths might have been originally intended as a more overtly homosexual band than they wound up becoming-- look at their first single: it's (I think) Hand in Glove b/w Handsome Devil. Though the POV is evasive in both those songs, they're from a much "gayer" perspecive, to me, than the rest of the Smith's stuff-- playfully gay, I guess. Plus the cover is a man's big naked bum.

antexit (antexit), Saturday, 19 June 2004 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

you know, not to be screamingly obvious, but people aren't simply "gay" or "not gay." thank you for your time.

amateur!st (amateurist), Saturday, 19 June 2004 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

also why are people so excited by dj premier's admission of diverse tastes--like the admissions of outkast, timbaland, etc. etc. before him? i think the idea that hip hop stars or producers are to be expected to produce a list of extremely narrow and "correct" influcences is sort of an anachronism.

amateur!st (amateurist), Saturday, 19 June 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

I actually do agree, sir. Then I think of plenty of the fans (of any genre) who seem to think that listening to anything else is a mortal sin, and I giggle.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Saturday, 19 June 2004 21:54 (twenty-one years ago)

The title of this thread keeps irritating me a little because it's hard for me to think of "hardcore" as anything different than what it meant in mid-80's U.S. i.e. Black Flag, Husker Du, Minor Threat, etc. etc.

I don't have the special edition, but I do have the latest Mojo and Joe Moss, their manager, is quoted as saying "James Maker [guy who stood on stage dressed in drag for their early gigs] was part of the band then...I just didn't know what he was there for. Initially Johnny [Marr] thought it was something that could be really good, but wouldn't be totally commercial. It was something that would really get him going...he thought it would appeal to the gay crowd...he just knew it would get him known."

I actually don't think Rollins is gay, despite following his career pretty closely for some years. I think if he was, he would have come out and said it by now. He's done standup bits where he's shown he's not a homophobe by any stretch. That story about Morrissey being in the audience really made me wince, though. Shame on Henry, Moz was a punter who might have even paid to get in.
