Rick Springfield, Behind The Music

Watching this crapumentary on VH-1, I realized one thing: the Rick Springfield stuff I never heard of that he released 10 years before his career really took off is way better than the stuff he's famous for. And yet, none of it is available. I want the album with the super hero comic book cover of Rick in a Superman suit. It sounds like psychedelia. Anyone wanna sell it?

If it's better than his 'famous' stuff, then it must be pretty fucking great!

I especially like the one that goes "I wish that I was Jessie's girl"! It's so gender-bending.

Sean, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He sings "I wish I *had* Jessie's girl." cf. lyrics.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

guys, guys, the point is prob'ly moot.

fritz, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I know, I was just kidding.

Sean, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no no, he actually sings "I wanna tell her that I love her but the point is prob'ly moot" in that song! the most awkwardest lyric ever.

I just downloaded "I've Done Everything For You". Powerful like Joan Jet, I tell you!!! That is a great song.

Jesse's Girl is ass.

Who sings "I love a rainy night"? That song bothers me, too. What a dumbass topic for a song.

My next phase will be Huey Lewis.

P.S. Who's the best: Rick Springfield, Dusty Springfield or Buffalo Springfield?

Nude Spock, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

he rhymes moot with cute.

Sterling Clover, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That reminds me, is Gentlemen's Relish a good name for my Rick Springfield cover band?

Nude Spock, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"I Love a Rainy Night" is Eddie Rabbit.

Hey, guess what? "I've Done Everything" is by SAMMY HAGAR! That's right, Spock likes a SAMMY HAGAR song! Na na na na na na na!

dave q, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Rick Springfield does a COVER of it. I never heard Sammy's version, but he was on the Behind The Music and he said it gave him chills when he saw Rick do it. The chill factor is good, he says. Anyway, look, see, it's not cool to like Sammy Hagar! Not even one song! ILM isn't rockist at all. And I don't hate Sammy Hager, either. Don't own anything by him, and think he's kinda tacky, but I enjoy that kind of shit. I can't drive 55. Give me some Quiet Riot and some Twisted Sister. I'm a happy camper. At LEAST it's more than just a drum beat and 2 synthesized notes.

JESSE'S GIRL MUST DIE. be cleansed from our collective memory like trotsky from a stalinist photo library. no, this is not personal. it's purely aesthetic.

HEY! No talkin bad bout Eddie Rabbit! ILaRN = one of the best songs of all time. therefore, you eat bananas.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh lord... there was that sci-fi-ish video he had that I'd completely forgotten about. And a movie! He had his own movie!

Kim, Friday, 16 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I remember 16 and Tigerbeat extensively hyping his movie -- "Hard to Hold" (er, maybe it didn't do well because the title sounds so porn).

But I only bought them for the John Taylor posters, even then I found Rick laughable in the teen idol stakes. His songs were okay, though.

four years pass...
You guys are all nutso. Sammy Hagar is one of the greatest rockers to ever live! They just don't make music like that anymore.

If this one was on the SAT I would fail miserably.

three years pass...

Ok, this comic book album ("Comic Book Heroes") is pretty amazing...probably better than his Mission: Magic stuff. Kind of reminds me of bits of Tin Tin mixed with the non-single stuff by John Kongos on his "Kongos" album. Not as bubblegum as I'd expected. The two songs w/gospel-style backing vocals ("Why Are You Waiting" and "Do You Love Us") are fantastic. Maybe the best album I've rediscovered this year.
