The Britney Tithe

Sometimes I'll listen to a song and feel like getting on the phone to Britney's peeps and telling them she should steal it, because her version would be superior to both a) most of her other stuff, and b) the original. For example, Britney definitely has to cover Mya's "Again & Again" and Mis-teeq's "Secrets of the Night", but I think she'd also do a more-than-decent version of Sticky Fingaz's "Ghetto", or The Strokes' "Last Night".

So, the question is, which songs should artists tithe to Britney, and why? Or choose some other Pop Monarch who deserves the tithe.

I think Brittney could cover the sex pistols god save the queen quite nicely!

Mr. wolf, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Last Night" by the Strokes could work, actually...although I'd nominate "The Passenger" by Iggy Pop, which would fit in nicely with her campaign for unconditional world domination.

"The Torture Never Stops" by Franks Zappa. i. It's in her register. ii. It's a natural follow-up to "Slave 4 U". iii. It would be better than the original almost by default (i.e. no guitar solo).

Something by Christina Aguilera, just to see what the latter would do in response (ie, screech like a harpy -- and then leave the recording studio and complain loudly).

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Oh. A Day In The Life. She's done The Stones, now for The Beatles. Can you imagine her saying... "I'd love to turn... you... on..."

I can.

JM, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ian and I already started a petition to get her to cover Don't You Want Me with Jarvis Cocker. I think she should do a version of Professional Widow.

Ally, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"96 Tears" b/w "Sister Morphine"

mark s, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'll sign that petition - as long as Britney imitates the bad dancing from the original video...

EdwardO, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I'd love to hear Britney cover Catholic Girls by Frank Zappa.

Mr Noodles, Tuesday, 20 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ooooohhhh that's a good one.

JM, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Britney Spears should make an album made up of the following covers:

"This Corrosion" - Sisters Of Mercy
"Sex On Wheelz" - My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult
"Don't Blow Your Top" - KMFDM
"Head Like A Hole" - Nine Inch Nails
"Friday I'm In Love" - The Cure
"Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" - The Smiths
"Comfortably Numb" - Pink Floyd
"High And Dry" - Radiohead
"Rhinoceros" - Smashing Pumpkins
"Far Out And Gone" - Jesus And Mary Chain
"Standing There" - The Creatures
"Crushed" - Front 242
"Coast Is Clear" - Curve
"To Turn My Back On You" - Sade

I would buy this hypothetical album IN A HEARTBEAT.

'Golden Brown' by the Stranglers

Ben Butler, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Orphans" by Teenage Jesus

Arthur, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've heard a VERY innarestin' cover version of a Britney song: 00PS I DID IT AGAIN.

Kodanshi, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"This Corrosion" - Sisters Of Mercy

...but obviously not the full 10 minute version. Why the hell is that song so long, damnit?

Ally, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's produced by Jim Steinman. You expected economy and restraint? ;-)

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, no, but it's not like they NEED the last three minutes of the song. Actually, anything after (and most of before) the part where he carries on about the hand of god could be edited down.

Ally, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The 12" version leaves only the crucial bits. It's 8 minutes long.

Wheeler, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The version they do in concert these days runs a bit quicker, as does "Temple of Love."

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Like A Virgin"?

dleone, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Brought to you by Brian McDonald & Snuggles. Pretty cool. I also liked the rendition of "Elephant Talk"

Dave225, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

That's the version they played on VH1 then, Wheeler. That one 11 minute version is just too fucking much, I mean who do they think they are, Kraftwerk?

Ally, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I will only be satisfied with a twenty minute version of "This Corrosion".

Dan Perry, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You are a sick, sick man, Perry.

Britney should cover "Yes" by the Manics. I wanna hear her say "dumb cunts same dumb questions".

Ally, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this is an obvious response then, but Flower by by Liz Phair. I want to hear her say "i'll fuck you and your mignions too" in the spacecat voice it will sound like a reverse-rape fantasy in an alien abduction scene

Vic, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

esp. if the minions are played by french kittens juggling onions

mark s, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

precisely

then she should cover My Country Tis of Thee dressing up as a formerly nubile scarecrow in the video, spread-eagleing open her red white and blue painted boobs to a jingoist folky-backbeat

to keep "reinventing" herself, you know

Vic, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

britney taking the female vox role in neubauten's "stella maris" = jess' dream come true.

jess, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"A Woman's Story". Let's see if she's got what it takes to reclaim it from Marc Almond.

Arthur, Saturday, 24 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

nine years pass...

Old ILM wasn't nearly as pro-pop as people like to misremember. I asked this question in all seriousness and every response was a joke.

Tim F, Saturday, 30 July 2011 10:54 (fourteen years ago)

Um the majority of responses in this thread aren't jokes, I think they were actually serious.

Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Saturday, 30 July 2011 11:37 (fourteen years ago)

Or rather, the suggestions were serious even if the posters were being AMA in jokey?

Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Saturday, 30 July 2011 11:38 (fourteen years ago)

my response was totally serious!

king of torts (strongo hulkington's ghost dad), Saturday, 30 July 2011 11:54 (fourteen years ago)

Dan's response is so utterly Dan that I'm surprised Tim thinks it could even be slightly a joke.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 30 July 2011 13:52 (fourteen years ago)

OK who else had to look up the definition of the word "tithe" after clicking on this thread?

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 30 July 2011 13:53 (fourteen years ago)

To make an absolutely true statement and still be joking is pretty much so absolutely Dan though, Ned.

Tim F, Saturday, 30 July 2011 16:06 (fourteen years ago)

Million-dollar idea:

Blackout-style "She's Lost Control"
