Suddenly, I'm hearing great blues albums, as opposed to whatever I heard before (some of the more boring albums from Leadbelly, Howlin' Wolf and Buddy Guy, boring Clapton and Hendrix bootlegs and lame Stevie Ray Vaughn).

Surprisingly, I borrowed a whole bunch of blues CDs and am loving each of them. Okay, first it was the ZZ Top 6 pack thing. Since then, it's been BB King "Makin' Love is Good For You", Buddy Guy "The Real Deal w/GE Smith & The SNL Band" and Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Couldn't Stand The Weather" w/ 4 bonus songs. It's about the best 6 or 7 hours of music for nonstop listening. I am in such a good mood. I wouldn't mind getting fucked up. Oh wait, I am.

I want to get something by Johnny Lang and Lucky Peterson, as well. Anyway, what are your suggestions?

The debut albums from both Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Johnny Lang are excellent. I was a little disappointed in both of their sophomore efforts. Blues On The Bayou by B.B. King is a terrific late career release. You can't go wrong with the Stevie Ray box set either.

Thanks, guys. I plan to trade in a bunch of shit like Plasmatics, April March, Rice, Barcelona... you know, shit that doesn't have repeat listenability. I'll be sure to check out your recommendations and I will probably pick up a few for sure. Deguello is a definite once I've heard some samples online and the Kenny Wayne Shephard and Jonny Lang are done deals already. Most likely, the BB King will be snatched up if I find it. Thanks a bunch. Even you, comatose person.

Ah, Anthony! Now you're talking!

Did anyone actually buy that Charley Patton box set, and if so is it any cop or should I just stay with the bog standard compilations?

I forgot to mention an album called Don't Look Back by John Lee Hooker. It was produced by and features his old friend Van Morrison and it is excellent. It was recorded about 5 years ago and features reworkings of JL's songs with a smokin' band. I prefer it to his earlier, more raw stuff, but I'm probably in the minority on that one.

I really like a lot of A Ass Pocket of Whiskey by R.L. Burnside. I know it's the indie shithead slumming choice, what with JSBX on it, but I like those one-chord jams. A lot.

Also have a great record by Mississippi Fred McDowell called Somebody Keeps Calling Me. Again, this is another record very light on the 12- bar and heavy on the rhythm, which makes for better blues for me.

Last, on several comps. I have assorted tracks by JL Hooker cut in the 50s that are excellent. He really made his own way, and his structure, rhythm and singing are VERY different than your standard blues.

heavily second the Fred McDowell. Great rhythm guitar, no wanky stuff. I've lately been listening to more acoustic blues, Blind Blake (well, maybe that's ragtime), Mississippi John Hurt, some of that sweeter sound.

if you like raw sounding electric blues music, Hound Dog Taylor and the Houserockers were great slide guitar driven monsters. All their records are good. If you like the JSBX sound, this is where a lot of their early stuff comes from.
