Oh, c'mon. You can't just start a thread and end it with a singular ol' "?". Give us an example of what you think.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 16 August 2004 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Do the Black Crowes really sound THAT much like The Faces?

None of the Elephant6 bands sound anything like the Beach Boys to me.

Not to beat a dead horse but...

Interpol -> Joy Division
Nirvana -> Pixies

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 16 August 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Decemberists sounding like Neutral Milk Hotel/Jeff Mangum. When I first heard them I thought "Robyn Hitchcock" all the way for the vocals.
I hadn't heard a ton of NMH so I went back and listened and I couldn't hear it.
While they may sound a bit alike, I don't think it warranted all the "sounds like NMH" tags they got in so many music reviews. It was like a Republican smear campaign taking off in the media; all the reviewers were just lazy and passed it on...I think.

Garibaldianne (Garibaldianne), Monday, 16 August 2004 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

With the exception of a few moments on S/E, Pavement never really sounded that much like the Fall, with particular emphasis on everything from Crooked Rain on.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 16 August 2004 02:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know how much Interpol as a band sounds like Joy Division, but the singer does sound like Ian Curtis, at least.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Monday, 16 August 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Interpol sounds like My Dad Is Dead!!!!

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 03:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes, well, Gary Numan was consistently accused of ripping of David Bowie back in the day. Rubbish!

the music mole (colin s barrow), Monday, 16 August 2004 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

mogwai : slint

gygax! (gygax!), Monday, 16 August 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

well numan is a big bowie fan, and even incorporated some of his late 70s look in the tubeway army days..

chris andrews (fraew), Monday, 16 August 2004 03:30 (twenty-one years ago)

i always thought the born against/refused thing was overstated. it's not without some truth, but it's just been run into the ground because of the backlash against all the crappy wannabe hardcore bands being influenced by the 'shape of punk to come'.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 16 August 2004 04:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i never thought nirvana sounded ANYTHING like the pixies.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 16 August 2004 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

JSBX: Elvis

Huck, Monday, 16 August 2004 04:53 (twenty-one years ago)

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:03 (twenty-one years ago)

The Knack:The Beatles

John Fredland (jfredland), Monday, 16 August 2004 08:13 (twenty-one years ago)

R.E.M.: The Byrds (Ooh, ahh, Rickenbacker arpeggios. They still never sounded anything like each other)
Warren Zevon: Bob Dylan

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I won't pretend The High Llamas' stuff isn't (intermittently) evocative of Brian Wilson, I just think the quality of their(O'Hagen's) material makes the constant comparisons irrelevant, to say nothing of lazy and tiresome.

orangeblazer, Monday, 16 August 2004 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Talking Heads -> Velvet Underground

shookout (shookout), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

When people say that Nirvana sounded like the Pixies, what they REALLY mean is "Nirvana's best-known song ['Teen Spirit'] sounds kinda like the Pixies' best song ['Gigantic']." Same straightforward 4/4 plod, extremely quiet verse/extremely loud refrain seesawing structure. And that's about it, far as I can tell.
Same thing happened to Queensryche a dozen-or-so years ago - they had that one hit song that sorta sounded like something off The Wall (its arpeggiated guitar part did, anyhow), which led to many Pink Floyd comparisons.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Oasis doesn't sound anything like the Beatles.

John Bullabaugh (John Bullabaugh), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hey Paul, Hey Paul, Hey Paul, let's have a ball..." / "Hello, hello, hello, HAL-llowwwww"

Huh, I never thought of that. I still don't think that's it, though.

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The Smashing Pumpkins "ripping off" My Bloody Valentine?

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Monday, 16 August 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

officer pupp, Monday, 16 August 2004 19:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Phish does not sound like Grateful Dead.
-- nickalicious (nickaliciou...), July 20th, 2004 9:55 AM. (nickalicious)

Nickalicious OTM.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 16 August 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

When I first heard Nirvana I thought "hey a new metal band" but I was pretty young.

David Allen (David Allen), Monday, 16 August 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

strokes --> velvet underground

Fuck off, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 22:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Dadaismus (Dada), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 09:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Elliott Smith -> Nick Drake

Reed Rosenberg (reed), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:51 (twenty-one years ago)

This thread is just ripping off the old thread.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 21:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Radiohead sounds like NOTHING on the actual NOTHING catalogue, in every case they've been described as sounding as such (Kid A, Amnesiac 'critiques'). More LIKE early electroacoustic composers--- e.g., Xenakis, Parmegiani, Luc Ferrari, etc. --- on the electronic side of things. And more like modern classical composers on the skull off their songwriting.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 22:04 (twenty-one years ago)

"skull of," even. Annoyed by the voice of my sister.

Salvador Saca (Mr. Xolotl), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 22:05 (twenty-one years ago)

peter smith (plsmith), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 22:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Most of these bands at least resemble the earlier band, but if I'm going to follow the format:

Nine Inch Nails -> Skinny Puppy
