Anyone know anywhere I could find some bhangra/desi stuff in chicago (I assume Devon would be the place to start?) thanks for any advice you can give me.

there's a huge cd store owned by the patel brothers west of western on devon.... it's the corner... i forget the cross street. but it's got a huge sign. the cd/video stores on devon tend to focus on hindi film music.... hope that was helpful. i've been to a lot of those stores but i never remember the names.

Cool I'll check it out. Is it far from Western?

I'm going to guess bhangra/desi stuff isn't usually released on vinyl.

i've never seen any vinyl in the stores on devon.

I shall investigate tomorrow.

I also (speaking of entirely different asian music) went to this CD store in Chinatown the other day, and I'm thinking of going back and buying something blind based on the cover art. Seems like a winning notion, yes?

Anything I should avoid?

oh man, i don't know the chinatown record/video stores well at all. for a few years i searched in vain for some vcds of certain old chinese movies and never came up with anything. but then they'll have weird shit like laserdiscs of hou hsiao hsien movies. i've never tried the chinese music. a lot of times when you're looking for old music, you only find weird synthy modern remakes, or worse, the old vocal tracks with karaoke-esque backing tracks replacing the originals. (actually i have one hindi tape like that which isn't too bad.) as for modern chinese pop, so much of it sounds like total dreck. but if you find something by gim liong let me know.

i mean i've never tried looking for music in the chinatown stores in chicago. i've found some things in new york and paris chinatowns, though.

There are some w/ some interesting cover art, but I fear its all going to be a tad saccarine for my tastes.

I know of at least one shop in the plaza in Archer that sells CDs and VCDs. If you have a general idea of what you want, you'll probably get a better deal online. But it's worth a trip, if only to eat at Lao Sze Chuan -- the best grub in Chinatown.
