The "Project Name" v. "Birth Name" Problem (i.e. Pole v. Stefan Betke)

When discussing Farben or Deadbeat or Soul Center -- Do you talk about Farben like its the name of a person, or a band, or do you just use Jelinek's name... What's the strategy? Sometimes it seems like a pain in the ass. What do you like to see when you're reading about music?

Perhaps I overstate this problem.

i see it more of a problem for the artist.

the project name sucks because sometimes you're over with the project, yet you're stuck in some sort of ex-blah hell. can a person ever move on?

the birth name is starting to suck because of the ludicrous nature of trademark in the US at least. i was reading the other day that jerry falwell, the christian conservative jerk, was suing someone else for falwell.com because "jerry falwell" is his trademark, which is moronic. he can own his name? those of us with fairly common names are essentially fucked to use our names in creative endeavors.

(sorry for not really answering the question above.)

I usually use (and prefer to see) the birth name. I think it's easier to use that throughout. You don't have to alternate terms if you switch between performance, biography, etc. ("Fourtet was born in...").

On the other hand, some artists who use a project name do so to create a discrete persona, and probably that should be respected?

I didn't know there was some new material out, thanks for the heads-up! But I think we should discuss it in the proper Pole thread, this one is a bit confusing because it isn't really about him.
