1 & 2. Annoyingly there's no sign of this or of the songs that appear on it - in spite of the fact that virtually everything The Monkees ever recorded appears to have been released

"33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee" is comically bad, only worth watching for its OMG camp value. (And I say this as an ardent Monkees devotee.) Poorly conceived, acted, and edited (argh, the bluescreen of death, it blinds me); and the new songs are subpar, especially the dippy "I Go Ape" and "Wind-Up Man." The parts that are worthwhile are a song from Julie Driscoll and Brian Auger (I don't know its title, alas); Julie and Micky Dolenz injecting some soul into "I'm a Believer"; Peter dipping into some fugue (Bach's Toccata in D?); and everyone bouncing around freak-out-style to "Listen to the Band."

Oh, and my favorite moment: during a tribute to '50s rock & soul, Little Richard jumps on top of his piano and starts frug-ing, and then the Clara Ward Singers perform "Dem Bones" with remarkable aplomb (Clara does a grand ol' dance, and then the editors ruin it by inserting over the bluescreen images of two skeletons dancing -- get it, "dem bones," oh it hurts).

Worth borrowing just to view once and say "oh my god, I can't believe this happened," but not really worth owning. Head is a hundred thousand times better. Head is pretty widely available now, but "33 1/3" isn't -- I got it at the Amoeba in SF as a bootleg (which amazingly included the actual commercials it aired with -- Hi Karate! The American Scene!).

Hope this helps. I'll recap the whole "33 1/3" show if anyone's curious.

33-1/3 is also available on DVD as part of Rhino's Monkees Season 2 box set, but unfortunately it's Region 1 only.

I would tend to characterize "33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee" as delightfully bad. It strikes me as prime 60's kitsch, well worth a look. "Head" is a wonderful piece of surrealist pop, with some wonderful tunes in the soundtrack, which stands as a psychedelic classic, IMHO.

I may take the plunge and watch this. Wish me luck.

Is it mentioned upthread how it was buried in the schedule when it aired?

Heatmiserlou (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 30 December 2021 00:50 (four years ago)

Three minutes in and I am thinking that this is the kind of thing that surely has to have a credit like Screenplay by Harlan EllisonAlan Smithee.

Guessing Davy doesn’t end up hitting on Julie Driscoll or even getting the proto-CGI stars in his eyes to the accompaniment of the “Monkees Love Theme” that I am starting to contend John Lennon nicked for his “Love” song on POB.

Got slaughtered by the '69 Oscars.
