... fantastic namecheck for scotland's most unfairly underrated post-metal gurus, or just an embarrassing attempt to look ROCK by a beetle-browed buffoon?

grimly fiendish, Friday, 13 August 2004 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd go for the latter, but I was too embarrassed to admit watching it to start the thread...

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Friday, 13 August 2004 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

He wore a Darkness tee-shirt on TOTP before the Darkness had had a top 40 single. FACT.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 13 August 2004 23:22 (twenty-one years ago)

he is a fan i think.

There was a story a few years ago when he went to an Aereogramme/Arab Strap (Can't remember.. it was a Scottish band beginning with A) gig and was heckled by the band, when the band spotted him in the audience.

He is just an indie kid.. apparently his favourite label is Fierce Panda.

jellybean (jellybean), Friday, 13 August 2004 23:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yeh i keep reading all this stuff about how he's ROCK at heart and blah blah blah ... but it doesn't stop him being a chump.

still, a big-up for the mighty 'gramme is always a good thing. so i'm not going to be churlish any more.

grimly fiendish, Saturday, 14 August 2004 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Is anyone going to mention that Seclusion leaked?

harshaw (jube), Saturday, 14 August 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

It's because he's ROCK at heart that he's a chump. All that desperate chasing after credibility should be left to Blink 182.

Aerogramme are great tho.

noodle vague (noodle vague), Saturday, 14 August 2004 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I also admired the ferocity and barely-controlled vitriol with which he said that fellow Saturday morning TV staples Sam and Mark were 'fucking awful' while wearing the aforementioned tee.

darren (darren), Sunday, 15 August 2004 17:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Why does everyone assume that, just because they make millions out of crap rock, boy band types don't go home at night, listen to what people on this thread would classify as proper music, and laugh at the fact that they are smart enough to be making shitloads more money than the likes of Aerogramme ever will?

ailsa (ailsa), Sunday, 15 August 2004 17:45 (twenty-one years ago)

>Why does everyone assume that, just because they make millions out of
>crap rock, boy band types don't go home at night, listen to what
>people on this thread would classify as proper music (etc)

i don't doubt chumpboy does exactly this. i mean, he whinges on about it enough. but that's the point: if he's got such a problem with sam and dave/boyband pop/etc etc etc, WHY THE HELL IS HE STILL IN BUSTED? for the cash, right? i mean, it must be. so, er, shut up, charlie, and go and buy some new T-shirts, eh?

i'd have a lot more respect for him if he said, hey, i like aereogramme etc *and* i like being in a boy band, because it's fun. but no: he's got this awful tortured-artist thing going on: how much he suffers with all those dreadful teenybop fans etc. (i'm basing this on the interview he gave to heat magazine the other week, btw.) if he's so goddamn 4-real, quit busted. otherwise stop f***ing cliping and start enjoying the cash! the tit.

and it's got nothing to do with "proper music", FFS. i don't actually mind busted. it's just him. he's a wank.

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 15 August 2004 19:16 (twenty-one years ago)

er, sam and mark. not sam and dave. obviously :)

grimly fiendish, Sunday, 15 August 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Charlie is the least interesting member of Busted because of his stupid Sonic Youth t-shirts and the like.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe if he was into grindcore or black metal...

latebloomer (latebloomer), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

One of these days James will go on TOTP or something wearing an Archies t-shirt and then I will explode or something. I'd have a *lot* more respect if he did something like that.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:16 (twenty-one years ago)

They named their rabbit after Biffy Clyro.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

When Charlie plays with his indie band, he wears Biffy Clyro T-shirts apparently.

Biffy Clyro are shit, raise your standards, Charlie.

edward o (edwardo), Monday, 16 August 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Charlie Simpson's rubbish taste in indierock never ceases to sadden me.

And yet I have that awful indiekid voice at the back of my brain going 'but it's great! it'll get the kids into indie! like blur got me into ride! and then they'll listen to so much indie that they'll have a massive reaction against anything chart-bound and pretend they never listened to busted in the first place, and then they'll hit about 16 and get into ironic appreciation of the hits of the past and maybe learn to get over themselves!'

(however the fact remains that Aereogramme are toss.)

cis (cis), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Is he the same one that wore the Elliot Smith T shirt on totp the other week? I quite like the idea that there are indie kids around that still like to be in pop bands.

lupine lupin (lupinelupin), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

>I quite like the idea that there are indie kids around that still like
>to be in pop bands.

heh, but that's the point: chumper keeps going on about how much he hates it. the big fud

grimly fiendish, Monday, 16 August 2004 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I imagine with the Heat interview the 'c simpson is indierock boy dissatisfied with pop life o no' trope has been played up as much as it possibly could, to get some interest going and that, but it's still pretty fucking churlish. The members of Busted tend to whinge too much in interviews - eg about Pop Idol acts, with implication that they've somehow not paid their popstar dues, which is just absurd esp. considering how much marketing clout has been behind Busted from the beginning and the lack of popstar dues they've had to pay - and I'm developing the suspicion that they really don't respect their fanbase at all, which would be a fucking dud were it true.
