For me, it's been the mp3s, for at least 2 years now. (on an entirely unrelated note, i'm posting this thread from my cellphone, just to see if it works)

My Mp3 collection is a thin slice of what my record collection would look like if not for a lack of money.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Saturday, 14 August 2004 23:40 (twenty-one years ago)

MP3 collection is more representative of my current tastes, CD / LP collection moreso of my tastes over a longer period of time.

My MP3 collection is wholly unrepresentative of my tastes, as it's comprised of 3 distinct groups. 1)Hit singles of the last 50 years, basically a pop jukebox, 2)Bunches of obscure rarities from my favourite bands eg. Saint Etienne film scores or Mtn Goats radio sessions, and 3)Recent albums that I'm not quite sure if I want to buy, of have just been too broke to pick up yet, eg. Stars, 'Heart' or Alpha, 'Stargazing'

I go through a lot of stuff too; every two weeks, mindfull of disk space, I'll clean off stuff that I don't listen too, so there isn't enough permanence to develop a good picture of my tastes.

MP3: 80% electronic dance (mostly vinyl-only material), 10% pop singles and 10% other genres.
CD: 85% metal, 10% bargain bin singles (mostly top 40 dance), 5% albums in other genres.
Vinyl: 100% electronic dance music.

since i rarely, if ever, answer my own threads, lemme contribute my breakdrown:

cds: 20% lousy-to-alright 90s indie records i haven't listened to in years, 15% electronic dance music, 20% electronic non-dance music, 20% pop stuff (not counting self-made cdrs), 10% rap, 15% music made before 1985 (talking heads, jazz, dylan etc)

lps: 50% minimal detroit techno made by ex-metal guitarist, 50% german oompah (yes, i have 2 lps)

mp3s: 60% pop/pop-rap/pop-dance, 20% non-pop rap, non-pop dance 15% weird electronic things, 5% random/music made before 1980

astroblaster (astroblaster), Sunday, 15 August 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh...sorry...I see how this works now:

Tapes*:
20% Punk
20% Metal
10% Rap
10% Country
20% Pop
10% Comedy
10% Classical

CDs
10% Blues
4% Jazz
5% R&B/Soul
10% Punk
20% College Music (Pre-Nirvana "Alternative")
10% Grunge (Post-Nirvana "Alternative")
10% Goth
10% Hip-Hop
20% Celtic Music
1% Innapplicable

MP3s
Lots: Post Punk (Pre-Nirvana "Alternative")
Plenty: Punk, Blues, Indie (Post-Nirvana "Alternative")
Some: Disco, Motown and Soul
A Little: Metal, HipHop, Goth, Reggae, Jazz

LPs**
A whole flipping wodge of old motown singles

*-Track Tape**
Eagles Greatest Hits
Billy Williams and Marilyn McCoo

* Note = With the audio cassettes, its usually homemades with two or three different albums on each tape, and the genres of the albums never match.
** Note = No, I don't have a player for either the LPs or the 8-tracks anymore.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't even *have* an MP3 collection. So it's not representative at all.

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Monday, 16 August 2004 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

My hard drive ain't big enough to hold shitloads of albums on it, so I still burn off CDs as soon as I've downloaded the album. Still I do have a lot of MP3s but they're mostly singular tracks that you can't get on albums etc.
