Why In The Name Of All That Is Holy Would Anyone Like Kid Rock?

Awful rapper. Weak, unconvincing country crooner. All the misogyny of Eminem without any of the verbal skills. Overtly calculated, high-concept hybrid sound (yeah, yeah, you like Johnny Cash and Grandmaster Flash). "I like pussy, sucking on titties / fucked a lot of different bitches from a bunch of different cities" not even the worst line.

So... what am I missing? I recall Chuck Eddy naming Devil Without a Cause the best album of the 1990s. Is it his, uh, pungent authenticty? Nah, he's not even "straight outta trailer," he's a middle-class kid. So what is it? Do i JUST HATE FUN?!

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 15 August 2004 18:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Pretty much.

Also, this has been done to death.

What's to hate about Kid Rock?

Ow, sorry. I should have hit the old search engine before asking.

joseph cotten (joseph cotten), Sunday, 15 August 2004 18:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I like him because he's a Pistons fan and he gets drunk at the games and goes out on the floor during time-outs and waves a big Pistons flag. It's cool that he gets to invite Hank Jr. over for turducken. and I like "Cowboy" and "Wasting Time", those are just really great songs. I like the Fleetwood Mac sample in "Wasting Time" and I especially like the line "I'm in to win it like Yzerman / can drink about 15 Heinekens". I even liked his Coors commercials. I thought his introduction of Bob Seger at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame could have been a little better, though.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Sunday, 15 August 2004 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

"he's NOT a cowboy" is one of the greatest phrases ever birthed by ILX

Al (sitcom), Sunday, 15 August 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

His live band is really good, too.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Sunday, 15 August 2004 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Can misogyny really be offset by verbal skills?

Mark (MarkR), Sunday, 15 August 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It's f-ing Lynyrd Skynyrd meets Limp Bizkit. Therefore he is the WORST ARTIST OF ALL TIME.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

curtis hates america

Sir Chaki McBeer III (chaki), Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

If hating Lynyrd Skynyrd makes me hate America then call me C. bin Laden

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

C. bin Laden, liking Limp Bizkit is much more egregious than liking Lynyrd Skynyrd, the latter one of the country's finest bands ever.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, but I don't like either of them!

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

To be fair, I'd much rather listen to Lynyrd Skynyrd than Limp Bizkit.

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't even imagine what it must be like to hate Lynyrd Skynyrd.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a lot like being a terrorist

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

...except with more of an empty feeling inside, i'd imagine.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

subquestion: Am I the only one that gets goosebumps from those Busch beer "simple man" commercials?

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Sunday, 15 August 2004 20:58 (twenty-one years ago)

no, I get goosebumps every time I hear that song.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 15 August 2004 21:00 (twenty-one years ago)

NO! They should have used "Tuesday's Gone" instead tho, then it would be even better. Also it's ruined by the guy going "bbbuschhhhhhhhh..." in that breathy voice.

Monetizing Eyeballs (diamond), Sunday, 15 August 2004 21:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, you've reminded me that I DO like "Tuesday's Gone."

Curt1s St3ph3ns, Sunday, 15 August 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Welp, no TV for Anthony! I am so glad I have not seen that song used in an ad yet. Hstencil's sentiment seconded.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 15 August 2004 21:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't even imagine what it must be like to hate Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I believe Alex in NYC despises them completely.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 August 2004 21:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Without people like Kid Rock, who would attend AutoRama? Classic.

Leon Czolgosz (Nicole), Sunday, 15 August 2004 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

*ponders whether Leon means she's one of them or is just glad they're all in one place at one time for easy removal*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I am I the only one who gets goosebumps when that guy goes "bbbuschhhhhhhhh..." in that breathy voice?

southern lights (southern lights), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:50 (twenty-one years ago)

born of natural ingredients; smooth refreshing beer.

southern lights (southern lights), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:51 (twenty-one years ago)

head for the mountains.

hstencil (hstencil), Sunday, 15 August 2004 22:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i loathe him primarily for his deaddumb stoner gaze. is the celebrity gene pool that watered down that this is what passes for a 'cool dude' or some such hyperbole? i bought one of his albums once for $5 because i had never heard a note of him beyond the passable (c'mon admit it) country duet with whatsername. i listened to it and was astonished at how unspeakably bad it was. i am not just trying to be hipper than thou or trying to look down my schnozz at white trash. it was just unspeakably bad. in fact worse than bad it was just lame.

never again

newamsterdam (newamsterdam), Sunday, 15 August 2004 23:46 (twenty-one years ago)

What a great jingle that was . . . "Head for the mountains . . . of busch . . . [beat] . . . BEER"

That "BEER" was like that piano note at the end of Sgt. Pepper's . . . a pedal note for the end times.

Sorry, I should be talking about Kid Rock I suppose. I like the Yzerman line. Never knew that; +10 respect points.

southern lights (southern lights), Monday, 16 August 2004 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

that Busch jingle is a billion times better than anything Kid Rock has ever done, or will do.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 00:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"Anheuser Busch, St. Louis, Missouri."

I think every product should be required to state their name and location at the end of every ad, kinda like the political "...and I approve this message."

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Monday, 16 August 2004 02:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Or they should be forced to declare "rock over London, rock on Chicago" before announcing their slogan.

Why anyone would like Kid Rock? Because if you're going to listen to sexually callous, braggadocious lyrics, why not have them written by someone who knows exactly how cheap that is and therefore makes them as funny as possible (with a soupcon of irony to make the guilt taste better)? And if you're going to listen to bombastic raps delivered over reheated rawk riffs, why not either have the riffs played by a band that's really good at that shit, or have them picked by someone with enough taste to sample something that sounds startling in that context (How Soon Is Now FFS).

He's smart enough to know his music is dumb, and by not taking it seriously, makes it a lot of fun. Also, 'nuff respect for getting then losing a major label deal in his teens, and just going ahead with, what, eight years? of self-management, working local shows and putting out records ever more indie until he was literally releasing them from his basement.

[nb fyi: can't stand Grit Sandwiches, love Polyfuze, don't much like Devil Without A, LOVE Cocky. If I lived in America I'd be very eager to find Stoned Pimp and be idly looking out for a cheap second-hand copy of the new one]

wow, all this talk of Kid Rock and no mention of his dear departed li'l sidekick!
