gives me chills. incidentally i recently found a record at a thrift store with a giant chorus of children singing it along with some other, less interesting songs. ah, here it is

Smile is so fantastic though. but it may only give me chills because of the connection to the movie which is so so beautiful.

fantastic - i saw the film in my fourth grade class and never got this sublimely bizarre tune out of my head.

Michael Jackson ends his album "HIStory" with a rendition of this.

Yeah, that's what I thought he was referring to and I was going to SCREAM dud.
As it is, I've never heard it.

Costello does it in concert quite often, I believe... It opens and closes Cruel Smile - a companion disc to When I Was Cruel.

he wrote songs for his other movies too. "limelight" is catchy.

Classic... and in the context of "Modern Times"' poignant ending, especially so.

six years pass...

This melody did not become a song until 18 years after Modern Times, and Chaplin didn't write the lyrics.

kind of shrill and very self-righteous (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 23 November 2010 12:44 (fifteen years ago)
