OK, there are a lot of crazy things in hip hop used for bragging about material wealth but the rims are becoming the most important one. why do you think that is and when did actually that transformation from golde chains to car rims happened?
even Nas did a rim commercial...

I dunno rappers (esp West Coast) have talked about rims for awhile...I remember the 100 Spokes song by Above the Law and "Daytons" were always a big touchstone in rap/lowrider culture

a song off the first Mack 10 album , something about daytons(danas)
Rims have been the thing for at least 10 or 12 years. I remember a Source article with Erick Sermon showing off his rim shop and I haven't read the source in forever yearswise.

I dunno rappers (esp West Coast) have talked about rims for awhile

From my understanding, the lowrider culture, which eventually included putting nice shiny rims on a car, was started here on the West Coast in the late 30's early 40's and was purely a Mexican-American thing. Within the last 20-30 years, the African American community adopted A LOT of this culture as well. From there, with the emergence of West Coast gangsta rap, a little bit of this was brought into the hip hop game as a whole.
