"Bomber" by Motorhead (live version off of No Sleep `til Hammersmith). Not only did I furiously air guitar to it, I did it while walking to work just now courtesy of my iPod. Yes, it's true. I have no shame.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 18:57 (twenty-one years ago)

"Digital Love" - it's like I can't *not* air-guitar to it!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

There was an AC/DC special on TV the other night - I couldn't stop myself from throwing devil horns and throwing Angus Young-style poses.

Tantrum The Cat (Tantrum The Cat), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

the first track off that controller.controller "history" ep. i like air guitaring to "angular" stuff. i get jerky with the upstrokes (naughty).

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I've ever done this actually.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Love NYC" Andrew WK

ian g, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:21 (twenty-one years ago)

"White Wedding," yesterday.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Something by Raging Speedhorn while making dinner just now. I don't think it really matters what song

DJ Mencap0))), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Dire Straits "Sultans of Swing" this morning, nearly running my car over a median in the process.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I remember sitting in a shitty bar on Bleeker Street in 1989 (The Peculiar Pub, pedants) with a few friends of mine. There was a couple sitting next to us. When "Sweet Child o' Mine" by G'n'R came on, the male half of the couple actually stood up from his chair, bit his bottom lip and started strenuously mimicing Slash, while earnestly keeping eye-contact with his date. We shuddered in collective shame for him. A friend of mine wanted to buy the female half of the couple a pitcher of beer, just so she could pour it in the guy's lap.

Still, for some reason, hiking up 6th Avenue whilst scraping a tear into the front pocket of m jeans (where the strings ought to be) whilst listening to the amphetamine-fueled harmonics of Fast Eddie Clark's guitar seemed like a perfectly logical thing to do.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Metallica always make me air-guitar like a motherfucker.

Anything with guitar in, really. I'm quite shameless.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Yesterday I was sitting on a curb out in front of this club and some dude was stopped at a red light, "Hot For Teacher" blasting from out his windows. I back-n-forthed between air-guitar and air-drumming on that one. I'm a fucking air-multi-instrumentalist.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Heh heh, probably something by Twisted Sister or some such - I'm sure I haven't air-guitarred in literally 20 yrs, ever since I got a R-E-A-L one. But I confess to playing air DRUMS (an even more ridiculous activity!) a few nights ago. The track: "Halleluwah". The verdict: I SUCK!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I cannot resist air-xylophoning everytime I hear "Love My Way" by the `Furs.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I've air-keyboard-ed a lot when hearing "Just Like Heaven". Ya know, for the middle part.

kickitcricket (kickitcricket), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

same here

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

i air keyboard a lot to 80's synth music. i air drum a lot too. particularly whenever i hear that "i can feel it comin in the air at night" song by phil collins.

Felonious Drunk (Felcher), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:47 (twenty-one years ago)

walter's walk - the opening riff.

57 7th (calstars), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Air-drumming to mid-nineties jungle is quite fun.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I will admit to doing the "pointing at the imaginary audience" motion when I mastered GarageBand in an empty hotel room last weekend. I had drunk a lot of coffee.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

See School Of Rock for examples.

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Songs that have nearly caused massive multi-car pileups because I was air-drumming furiously to them instead of steering properly:

Beck's "Diamon Bullocks"
Edgar Winter Band "Frankenstein" (especially the breakdown)
way too many Zeppelin songs to get into
Jimi Hendrix's "Manic Depression"
N*E*R*D's "Rock Star"

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I air-honk my horn every time I'm in my car and hear "Back to the Hotel" by N 2 Deep.

kickitcricket (kickitcricket), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

To the guitar break in "A House is Not a Motel" by Love.

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm a fucking air-multi-instrumentalist.

A girl came up to me in a club once and asked "is there any air instrument you don't play?" Became something of a running joke that one... fair question, as well...

DJ Mencap0))), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

air EMS Synthi?

sexyDancer, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

sometimes i air-grasp-the-microphone-stand. i do it for the ladies in the house.

kephm, Wednesday, 18 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

as we speak to vincebus eruptum

peter smith (plsmith), Thursday, 19 August 2004 00:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"neat neat neat" by the damned. i was at work, i had just chopped a 15" leg of moulding off of a maybe 60" stick, and the song came on the radio. so i used the resulting 45" piece to rock.... USING MY IMAGINATION!!!!1111111

f ath, Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Strange coincedence, Nick. I was in the car and air-guitaring furiously to Hot For Teacher today.

Alex, the best air-xylophone tune ever is Gone Daddy Gone.

Davlo (Davlo), Thursday, 19 August 2004 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"Hot For Teacher" 2 hours ago.

billstevejim, Thursday, 19 August 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I air-bass more than anything, to be honest. It's how I figure chord progressions out.

For Van Halen, it's all Runnin' With The Devil for me, though I've got a spot for Hot For Teacher as well.

Actually, I do a lot of the 'pointing to the imaginary audience' too, especially when I've had a bit to drink. Any music, too.

derrick (derrick), Thursday, 19 August 2004 05:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no idea -- I perform air guitar all the time, even to songs that don't have any guitar. I imagine what they would sound like if they did have guitar. Usually four or five guitars, actually.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 19 August 2004 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

AC/DC - "Hell's Bells", in the car yesterday morning

Mike Salmo (salmo), Thursday, 19 August 2004 12:39 (twenty-one years ago)

"Underneath It All" by No Doubt, right after the dancehall bridge when everything goes quiet for a second.. it's not histrionic, it calls for a head-down, determined punk almost-pogoing type action

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 19 August 2004 12:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I air-drummed to "Gimme Gimme Good Lovin'" by Crazy Elephant this very morning

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 19 August 2004 12:42 (twenty-one years ago)

my friend Alessio does an excellent air-drumming impersonation of Nick Mason, Delicate Sound of Thunder-era. can't compete with him, he's a master.

Marco Damiani (Marco D.), Thursday, 19 August 2004 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I can play guitar - I never air-guitar

I can't play drums - I always air-drum

There must be something in this

Dadaismus (Dada), Thursday, 19 August 2004 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, I am also a guitarist who almost never plays air guitar but instead plays air drums.

eat fudge banana swirl (Nick A.), Thursday, 19 August 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

just you and me punk rock girl

Davlo (Davlo), Friday, 20 August 2004 03:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I was air-bassing to a number of songs on Kool and the Gang's Spirit of the Boogie.

Laszlo Kovacs (Laszlo Kovacs), Friday, 20 August 2004 05:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Sister Sledge "Lost in Music"

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 20 August 2004 06:05 (twenty-one years ago)

"Asteroid," Killing Joke.

Slim Pickens (Slim Pickens), Friday, 20 August 2004 08:07 (twenty-one years ago)

For some reason I did air guitar to the vocal part of "Harder Better Faster Stronger" on the way to the Pilot Light tonight. I had to do something.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Friday, 20 August 2004 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

It was probably Busted. In fact, I know that it was Busted, at an FT night back in the spring...

Super-Masonic Black Hole (kate), Friday, 20 August 2004 08:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I can play guitar - I never air-guitar
I can't play drums - I always air-drum
There must be something in this -- Dadaismus

Yes, I am also a guitarist who almost never plays air guitar but instead plays air drums. -- eat fudge banana swirl

And so we are three! What the hell's that all about? Wonder if the brothers Van Halen did the same, before they traded instruments and made rock guitar history? (Just plain ROCK history, in fact.)

Favourite song to mimic is by Iron Butterfly. And no, NOT the one you'd think, but "My Mirage" rather. It's fairly simple.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Friday, 20 August 2004 09:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"It Will Stand" - the bit where Jonathan Richman goes "Hear those guitars twang/*guitarry solo bit*/sharper than lightning/*another guitarry bit*".

dog latin (dog latin), Friday, 20 August 2004 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

first Slade album.
on monday, i think

joan vich (joan vich), Friday, 20 August 2004 09:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Does pounding a knotty-pine den wall with your fist while riding an exercycle count? I do this while listening on headphones to (brace yerself) Texas Terri Bomb! 's YOUR LIPS...MY ASS, which is just as good as its title is corny although some of the guitar (not played by her) is too corny, so I also play air guitar to manfully compensate

Don Allred, Saturday, 21 August 2004 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

"I Will Hold the Tea Bab," and--sorry Ned!--"Fulsom Prison Blues."

steve hise, Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Uh, I mean tea bag. My air guitar fingers are still shaking.

steve hise, Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Zappa's "THe torture never stops" in the bathroom while shaving.

On a later occasion furiously trading air leads with a buddy on the Rock&Roll Animal version of Sweet Jane. Later broke some dishes spinning on the floor during ACDC's "Overdose"...
I guess I air guitar all the fucking time come to think of it...

Angus Von Santana, Monday, 23 August 2004 04:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude, if you've broken plates before over a little air guitar, maybe you should think twice about doing it while SHAVING.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 23 August 2004 04:59 (twenty-one years ago)

The air guitarist cares naught for danger

Angus Von Santana, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 02:49 (twenty-one years ago)
