OK, first of all, what _kind_ of lesbian bar? Second, not all lesbians are 40 years old (Re: Joan Armatrading, etc.)(And Judy Garland - WTF?). Third, have any women, let alone lesbians answered this thread yet? Conversely, how many respondants have been in a lesbian bar?

Here are some suggestions:
The Butchies
Tribe 8
Bikini Kill
Julie Ruin
Le Tigre
Sleater Kinney
Chicks on Speed
Lesbians on Ecstasy
Tracy + the Plastics
Lois Maffeo
Heavens to Betsy
The Need
The Slits
XRay Spex
Joan Jett
Tami Hart
Tanya Donelly
Mary Timony
The Haggard
Adult.
Mirah
Missy Elliott
...
Or mainstream new or 80s Pop, Hip Hop, Disco, Rock/Punk, Techno, Folk, Zouk, Booty Bass, etc...

Just some thoughts.

Peace

Sorry for sounding a bit snarky in the first post.

Lesbians on Ecstasy do covers of Melissa Etheridge and kd lang but all techno-ravey-like. So it keeps everybody happy. Quote: "We think our music is what lesbians taking ecstasy for the first time would want to hear. It's kd lang like they've never imagined but always dreamed of. "

lesbian bars: the last frontier

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Monday, 23 August 2004 04:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Re: "gayday" and "that's what i am talking about."

My point was that it's kind of presumptious to come into a space like this and assume that "no one here is really a lesbian" based primarily on the fact that one ostensibly lesbian band hadn't been named yet. No one group holds the monopoly on queer expression. And my original question "what _kind_ of lesbian bar" was meant to indicate that the musical tastes of lesbians are as diverse and overlapping as any other 'group,' queer or otherwise - IE: not reducible to a few bands or styles.

blahblah blingbling blahblah, Monday, 23 August 2004 14:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Er, I meant "Re: 'gaydar'"

I am biologically ineligible to be a lesbian, but one upon a time I was whatever you call the male version of a fag hag, and I spent a fair amount of time in lesbian bars. Back then, THE indispensible track for lesbian booty-shaking (of which there was a lot -- women kind of like to dance) was Donna Summers, "State of Independence". My lesbian friends are not so much bar people anymore, and the last song I could generalize about for them would probably be Madonna, "Ray of Light" and k.d. laing through Ingenue. But Le Tigre wouldn't surprise me at all.

And, yeah, that L-Word OST is pretty dead on for 40-somethings chilling. Plus Ani, plus Indigo Girls, plus Holly Near and Chris Williamson.

Re: Amazing Rhythm Aces -- The lyrics to "Third Rate Romance" are forever graven in my mind (it is one of the greatest songs in the history of the world). But I don't remember any lesbians. Was there a radio edit or something?
