Melchior Productions - The Meaning

It's like Maurizio doing deep house innit? It's the best house album since Textstar, no? That bonus-disc is even better than the real album. Ronan, Andy, Tim, Mike The Teenage Mentalist, everybody...come on, surely I can't be the only one going mental over this one?

Omar (Omar), Sunday, 22 August 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Hmm... I do like it, but it gets a little tedious about halfway through. All of the tracks by themselves are really wonderful, but as a whole album there's a little too little variation in terms of mood, style, etc. I think this reinforces why house, tech-house, micro-house often works best in the 12" format. If this were split into 2-3 12"s, it would be much more exciting as listening material.

Yeah, but no doubt it has been released on (double) vinyl? Problem in this case is that you don't get that retrospective cd, which is a total must-have.

Omar (Omar), Monday, 23 August 2004 06:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The retrospective cd is incredible! Its got a deep house emotional flavor but with a minimal outlook.

The groove locks and I just sway around the apartment.

In a vague way it reminds me of Vocalcity.

More stuff like this please.
Sherburne is doing an article in the next Wire on him by the way.

hector (hector), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

bonus disc, what bonus disc?

i have had the album for ages but never really delved into it until mr. sherburne's wire article made me dig it out again. i pretty much agree with dirty_program on it. 'tis good but a little lacking in variation for me.

i totally adore his 'feel sensual' on superlongevity 3.

stirmonster, Monday, 23 August 2004 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

the CD version comes with a bonus CD of most (all?) of the tracks from melchior's aspect label... indispensible!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Monday, 23 August 2004 18:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I like this record quite a bit. The track he did on Superlongevity 3 was my favorite from that record last year; very minimal (in the sense few compositional changes) but totally effective and compelling. The most appealling feature is that the loop-based programming almost sounds too repetitive, but there's this little bit of something that makes it work and sound like development. (I suppose this is successful minimalism.) Structurally, it reminds me a lot of the Burger/Ink album or Theo Parrish's early singles.

glad to see someone else sharing my sentiments on that one. the original is one of my favorite perlon tracks ever.

this is otm. it's pretty ballsy to make an album out of exquisitely honed dj tools.

I know. I suppose it's the way you are woven into the groove without you actually noticing at first. At least that's what happens to me, you're walking around the room and suddendly you realise "this track has been going on for awhile now and it's amazing, please don't let it ever stop!" (Maurizio's 'M7' also is a good example)

I hate feel sensual (bahia mix) on that Superlongevity. Feel inessential, amirite?

Dan Barramouss (jimnaseum), Saturday, 18 November 2006 13:42 (nineteen years ago)

urrong!

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Saturday, 18 November 2006 19:01 (nineteen years ago)

I think it's the vocal sample. It seems overused to me, takes me out of the track which sounds really subtle and atmospheric otherwise.

Dan Barramouss (jimnaseum), Sunday, 19 November 2006 19:58 (nineteen years ago)

but that's kind of melchior's whole thing, he really beats those vocal samples into the ground.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Monday, 20 November 2006 00:50 (nineteen years ago)

Hmm, I just have a general aversion to the sound of an untreated human voice. Give me cold, mechanical, repetitious anti-human, robot-music or give me death!

Oh, and apologies for going OT but since you will probably read this reply, Senyor Sherburne: is there any chance you can tell me what the name of the artist/track was that you reviewed in Critical Beats a while back that was a Chilena who lives in Berlin featuring the guy from Los Prisioneros (I read the column in Borders and don't tend to buy the mag and google is no use)?

Dan Barramouss (jimnaseum), Monday, 20 November 2006 00:57 (nineteen years ago)

Nevermind. "Jorge Gonzalez + Techno" did the trick. Sounds pretty great.

dinky! on her label horizontal.
but beware, there's plenty of untreated human voice in her stuff. :)

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Wednesday, 22 November 2006 01:09 (nineteen years ago)

yeah, i hate the human voice, too, that's why i always carry around a $5 halloween voice modulator that i switch between "alien" and "monster" depending on my mood

As the days go by I feel more and more that Thomas Melchior is a genius.

That is all I wanted to say, inspired by just finding out about "Law of Grace" ,after seeing Vincent Lemieux play it on it's own, in its entirety, to end a rather excellent piknik electronik last summer. Since then I just thought of it as "the most euphoric song ever"

And Damn, that Soulcapsule 12" from not long ago is just the same brilliant, and my God, i listened to Different Places a few weeks ago, and it was just mesmerizing.

To add some relevance to this post, He does have an album out soon, which I hope will prove to be excellent as well.

one month passes...

there's a 30-minute-ish mp3 called 'melchior productions ltd - nodiscofuture' floating around, googled it up and apparently it's a promo mix of tunes from his upcoming album

if it really is legit, then we're in a real treat with the full-lenght

Manuel, Monday, 19 November 2007 09:04 (eighteen years ago)

in for a real treat

Manuel, Monday, 19 November 2007 09:05 (eighteen years ago)

Loving this! It's not as brainy as some of the recent Perlon full-lengths (thinking of Ark and Dandy Jack). Sounds sort of like something you might find on Kompakt but, as albums go, it's executed much better. It will be interesting to see how the (mixed) promo differs from the CD/LP versions.

lou, Monday, 19 November 2007 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

Whatever the track is in the second preview clip on Boomkat, it sounds amazing. Can't wait for this.

Is it just me or does that sound like an actual Pink sample (of "Get the Party Started") in "Coming Up"?? I can't hear the latter without singing the Pink song in my head.

lou, Friday, 7 December 2007 15:32 (eighteen years ago)

it is. there's a snoop sample in "out there" as well.

r1o natsume, Friday, 7 December 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

Haha that pink sample is distracting me too. Brilliant track though.

And a brilliant album, my copy only just arrived but already falling in love.. 'The Hypnotist', 'Coming Up', and in particular 'Her Majesty' all on constantly. 'In the spirit' is great too, I wish it was on the album though!

People Smiling

mehlt, Saturday, 7 June 2008 02:31 (eighteen years ago)

That being said. I am whelmed, but nevertheless intrigued by No Disco Future. Like The Pronsato album, the hype was there, along with great respect for the producer, and there was no immediate effect. Now I'm on my mere second listen of NDF and have only listened to Why Can't We Be Like Us a handful of times like two months ago, but will listen to it immediately. I'm eagerly awaiting this to grow on me, and will be heartbroken if neither album fully do, not just because of the expectation and time invested, but because I still believe Thomas Melchior to be a musical genius of sorts (yes, even if it was Tim Hutton who did the keyboards on Law of Grace).
I don't know what it is with these sorts of albums, it's not like theres a great deal of work needed (or maybe it is), but it's like you have to wait for it to come to you, and just be patient and let it play, which I'm finding especially challenging when there's piles of CD's deprived of being listened to.

mehlt, Saturday, 7 June 2008 02:40 (eighteen years ago)

i bet none of your cds sounds like no disco future though!

i just listened to it earlier today and i kept getting the sense that it was music that is a bit nostalgic for itself, but it is also so pure and detailed (it kind of sounds like sunlight to me) so it isn't a maudlin kind of nostalgia. and in spite of the details, i think it is still very much body music so maybe that's why it can seem a bit impenetrable. it is also minimal qua minimal much like the baby ford album that got reissued on perlon not too long ago. there's not so much to project onto or get lost in. it's as if it requires a roomful of sweaty bodies to be complete.

i think i remember reading that this was his first album done completely on a computer which is pretty impressive because it doesn't sound like computer music. anyhow, there's a lot i like about it: rhythm programming (i love the shape of his percussion sound :), usage of completely backwards or untraceable sounds, non-fussy micro-edits, gorgeous melodic details when they seep in...the long notes in the melody line in "prepare for love" hook me every time. i am reminded of the canyons and big sky every time i hear it. </hippie>

Also, does anyone find some of the high pitched sounds to be a too loud in the mix?
