I'll take a stab at number four. A Flesh Eaters album?

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Mick Jagger

tipustiger, Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Both correct! Stab further, Tim.

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

#6 is Chuck Eddy's "Gladys Knight & the Pips Rule", right?

Richard C. (avoid80), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow! Very good.

Forksclovetofu:
Um... I don't think so. Mine's admittedly subjective, but also pretty succinct, and I don't think I saw it on there.

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Sunday, 22 August 2004 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I know; I was just throwing in some Rogatis fun for the ultra conservatives.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Sunday, 22 August 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

OK, Forever Came Today is my guess for the Coley question.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Sunday, 22 August 2004 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

12. "Apparently, Prince's attitude [that rap sucks] didn't extend to his own music -- shockah!"

jaymc, Sunday, 22 August 2004 22:22 (twenty-one years ago)

5. Sun Ra's Heliocentric Worlds Volume appeared at #84 on the Top 100 but with a numerical rating of 7.

jaymc, Sunday, 22 August 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Jaymc, both correct! Tim, not correct, though that one is a "blast of pure high-energy stomp", or something like that. Forks, fair enough.

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Monday, 23 August 2004 12:01 (twenty-one years ago)

10. (paraphrase) he compared a teenage girl purchasing a Britney Spears CD to getting raped by the record company.

lovebug starski (lovebug starski), Monday, 23 August 2004 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Good call! What an idiot.

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Monday, 23 August 2004 12:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm guessing "A Minute To Pray, A Second To Die" is the Flesheaters LP in question, in which case Coley's admiration has increased - I know he once called it the best record of the '80s, but the "all-time" is new to me.

Sheffield's lyric is from Blondie's "Fade Away & Radiate" but I'm not sure how it goes. "Died in 1955" is in it somewhere.

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 23 August 2004 13:27 (twenty-one years ago)

#1. Mick Jagger.
#2. Prince is the artist, but I forget the name....

I missed the one about my own Gladys Knight and the Pips rule, though!

chuck, Monday, 23 August 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I love the Gladys Knight and the Pips rule

Mike Ouderkirk (Mike Ouderkirk), Monday, 23 August 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Sandpaper on spinach" is I'm pretty sure Frank Kogan about somebody's voice, but I forget whose (Sophie B. Hawkins's, maybe???)

chuck, Monday, 23 August 2004 15:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Can we contribute questions? Thanks! "He should be run out of town on a rail. Or a frtetboard; in his hands, they're the same thing." Who said it, and who was the musical culprit?

Don Allred, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:08 (twenty-one years ago)

"Fretboard," that is.

Don, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Eh sorry, I'll buttt out, don't wanna kill this. Lester Bangs, Neil Young. Bye guys.

Don, Monday, 23 August 2004 21:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Don, I was all set to answer "Lester Bangs" and "Ritchie Blackmore"!

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 06:10 (twenty-one years ago)

"the Gladys Knight & the Pips rule"?

Joseph McCombs, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

"A Minute to Pray" and "Fade Away and Radiate" are right, and Chuck was right about "Sandpaper on spinach", except not about the singer, which is funny since I got the quote 2nd hand from a lead review he did for SPIN.

Joseph, the GK&P rule says, paraphrased, that serious emotional music (like Gladys's lead vocal in "Midnight Train") is made more effective with the addition of a leavening agent (like the Pips' goofy background vocals). Having one without the other is less effective.

Remaining questions to be answered are:

2. The above appeared in a review of another artist. In a 1991 review, what name did Christgau propose for said artist?
7. "Sandpaper on spinach"--who coined it, what's it refer to?
8. According to Jimmy Guterman, who's "the greatest harmony singer in the history of rock and roll", and why?
9. Who said of Paul Simon's Graceland, "I haven't heard three better sounding records in the history of rock," and of Neil Young, "He's like a little baby--he'll rhyme the first thing he thinks of, but it'll all work out."
11. Who said that in 1997, "Even Mariah Carey became interesting!"

At the risk of courting massive disinterest, I'll give hints.

2. It's in a PM Dawn review.
8. It's because he can sing in two different keys at the same time.
9. It's from an interview in Paul Zollo's "Songwriters on Songwriting".
11. It's from fucking SPIN again (sorry!), year-end wrapup.

dr. phil (josh langhoff), Thursday, 26 August 2004 13:48 (twenty-one years ago)

7. Anthony Kiedis

9. Van dyke parks

11. Joe Levy
