the inevitable thread where you talk about things that the new BEST OF lists convinced you to download/buy/hear

for me, it's been an excuse to try out some stuff i wouldn't have thought i'd liked (and most of the time, unfortunately, i was right). but that stars track was pretty!

i suppose this is partially what the BEST OF threads are themselves for, but things move too quickly there.

The ILM top 100 tracks will have to be compiled on a CD and circulated. On top of being a nice momento, many of us will get the chance to hear a few dozen artists for the first time and give one last try to another two dozen.

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Monday, 23 August 2004 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

heard for the first time and loved:

Sugababes - "Run for Cover"
Mystikal - "Bouncin' Back"
Jamelia - "Superstar"
Stereo Total - "L'Amour a Trois"
Stars - "Elevator Love Letter" (shame on me for being a BSS fan but not hearing this)
Life Without Buildings - "Leanover" (this one stunned me)

downloaded a bunch of others that I liked a fair amount (and "Oops (Oh My)" finally clicked), but these were the ones I loved. Now I gotta get working on those recommended album tracks.

the wrens "thirteen grand" is slightly better than you'd expect faux-elliot smith to be.

I ordered kittenz and the glitz, but partially because the list reminded me of some suggestions from a friend, and mostly because i needed to spend 6 more bucks on amazon to get free shipping.

I have only just seen this thread - sorry, I have been posting my Tracks downloading impressions on the main one.

Anyway, Ladytron's "Seventeen" - reminds me of Sophie Ellis Bextor but with hooks replaced by mood, not always a bad thing but rarely a good one too.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Thought you'd've been all over that, you little dilletante, you.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:30 (twenty-one years ago)

The lack of SEB on the list is a shame, though being the indie twat that I am, it turned out that my favourite track was written by Bernard sodding Butler. Why didn't he write songs that good for Suede or that tall fella?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd heard some of the first Ladytron album and thought it was OK but never felt the urge to find out more. After this I'm still in neutral.

Alba which one is that? My favourite is still "Murder On The Dancefloor" though.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:36 (twenty-one years ago)

'I Am Not Good At Getting What I Want'

Alba (Alba), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Try the Soulwax mix of 'Seventeen', Tico. It's a whole different joy.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

'I Am Not Good At Getting What I Want'

Man that looks good in title case.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm naming my blog after that SEB track.

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Is this a decision you've just made?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 23 August 2004 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually it's "I Am Not Good At Not Getting What I Want". Although yes, it's utterly ace (as are "The Walls Keep Saying Your Name" and "You Get Yours")

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I went to bed and thought:

"I missed out the 'not', didn't I?"

But I decided against getting up to make amends.

Alba (Alba), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 06:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I've developed insurmountable negative prejudices against all that unfamiliar US indie stuff, but all those votes for (plus M Matos' glowing description of) Atmosphere's Lucy Ford piqued my interest and it sounds pretty fine right now.
