How far do you have to mangle a sample before you can claim street cred?

Me and my roomie just got Ableton Live and have been making songs with samples that we get off the internet or off magazine cds and stuff. It sounds pretty good to us, but deep down inside, I feel ashamed. Roomie argues that in fact since it's just raw samples and not hooks, that what we made is valid. Whatever valid is. Thoughts?

You kidding me? The streetest thing to do is leave all samples totally unaltered. And don't just use some random unrecognizable part of the song, use the hook! When you get famous all the kids will just know the tune as "that Jubaleeque song" anyway, so who cares.

The only reason to worry about samples is if you're going to get screwed over for putting one on a commercial release. Even then you've got to actually put a record out and have it sell enough to register on the legal radar.

That's true--good points all. Hmmm... what if we called ourselves the Stokes? or the Famin' Gloovies? Or Koup? 'cuz that's what we sound like. Koop without vocals. (we can't sing at all.)
