Often that seems like the best answer, but I try to avoid the temptation of answer that way every time I'd like to.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

It depends on the question of course

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:17 (twenty-one years ago)

What percentage of all questions ever can be answered "no"?

37.5%

iT's a fact.

Huck, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

It also depends on who's around the board at any given time.

Johnny Fever (johnny fever), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Depending on the number of possible answers, it depends.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Answer to original question: 87%. The other 13% can best be answered with "Fuck off."

n.a. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

it depends on how many people try to be a smart arse.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

it could be argued it's the ultimate pre-emptive copout.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

It depends on how you define "copout".

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:36 (twenty-one years ago)

and again, that's dependent upon the subject being discussed.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 17:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck off.

n.a. (Nick A.), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

is that a question? If so, it depends.

Gear! (Gear!), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 18:47 (twenty-one years ago)

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Lately there seem to have been a lot of questions for which "it depends" would be the best answer. However, it seems that a lot of people don't like that and need hard and fast rules a la if x, then y.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 24 August 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

It hinges on variables.

Chris Marx, Tuesday, 24 August 2004 20:22 (twenty-one years ago)

It depends is obviously a copout suck pigfuck answer, because in places where you know there's going to be miles and miles of chatter, you should only say something worth saying.

That said, the correct answer to the question is "it depends."
Even yes or no questions can be answered with a wiggle, so the correct answer is 100 percent.

Even questions you think are easy:

Is Michael Jackson human?
Is Elvis dead?

Depends. Depends.

What question CAN NOT

Shaun (shaun), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

be answered with "it depends?"

Shaun (shaun), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

'It's all relative.'

That's what I say when someone enquires of me as to the contents of the cannibal feast I have prepared.

the music mole (colin s barrow), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

chrissakes, I think I've answered "it depends" to 2 separate threads today - or maybe even 3! I guess it is kind of a copout, but for me it's more of an instinctive thing: I'm a Libra, the sign of the scales, and hence I'm usually compelled to weigh both sides of an issue, sometimes to the point of indecisiveness; and the result is an "It depends..." answer. Maybe I'll try to avoid that in future. Starting...NOW!

My answer:...uh, I'd think that 100% of these questions could theoretically be answered (or left UN-answered, same diff) with "It depends."

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 07:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I think the copout is answering yes or no to a question when the truthful answer is "it depends"
